Through the creative mediums of lyrical poetry, monologues, and traditional dramatic scenes, Songs for Waiters concerns an owner and two employees at an urban bar/restaurant. Through their work, their interactions with the public and each other, and reflecting on their own lives, the three men unpack contemporary debates on work, violence, and sexuality. Different, But Mostly Same by Kai Tomizawa………..……………………………...51 2 About Young Playwrights for Change These scripts are the culmination of Oregon Children’s Theatre’s fourth annual playwriting contest for middle school students. Sixth through eighth graders were invited to submit original ten minute plays that addressed the theme “What would you change about the world?” Six finalists were chosen by a reading panel of teachers and Young Professionals to work with professional playwrights Matthew B. Zrebski and Debbie Lamedman to revise and refine their writing. The plays published here were directed and performed by the Young Professionals Company at the YP Studio Theater in May 2016. OCT’s program is also part of a national playwriting contest hosted by Theatre for Young Audiences USA and the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. Theaters across the country hosted similar contests and submitted a winner to Young Playwrights for Change. One of OCT’s finalists, MJ Sasse, was the winner of the national competition for her script, Wartorn. Her script was read at TYA: New Visions New Voices at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Screenplay by TAIKA WAITITI Based on the Book “CAGING SKIES” by Christine Leunens -HATE SATIRE AN ANTI BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY Screenplay by TAIKA WAITITI Based on the Book “CAGING SKIES” by Christine Leunens FOREWORD After receiving an email from Taika Waititi in 2010 about the possibility of a film option on my novel Caging Skies, the first thing I did was watch his short films, “Tama Tū” and “Two Cars, One Night.” Afterwards, I went to the cinemas to watch Boy. His fine balancing act between drama and humour convinced me that we were coming from the same place artistically. I can still see him putting his arms behind his head and his feet up on the desk as he observed the sea view from the oce we were meeting in for the first time. Funny, down-to-earth, refreshingly spontaneous, it was just Taika being Taika. That day, he explained to me how he saw the film and what parts of the book he would focus on. My main concern was that I’d seen film adaptations so faithful to the book that they somehow ended up unfaithful in essence, despite the well-meaning intentions. The challenge is that a book doesn’t go directly from the book to the screen; it goes page to page. Taika’s script had much to take from the book, yet it also had to escape it in order to come fully to life in its own medium. A reader spends a comparatively long time in there on his or her own, days or even weeks, in the dense chrysalis of prose, experiencing the emotions of the story while oblivious to the world. -
Seinfeld, Jerry
Jerry Seinfeld created The Seinfeld Chronicles with Larry David in 1988 for NBC. The show was later renamed Seinfeld . By its fourth season, it had become the most popular and successful sitcom on American television. The final episode aired in 1998, and the show has been a popular syndicated re-run. After he ended his sitcom, Seinfeld returned to New York City to make a comeback with his stand-up comedy rather than stay in Los Angeles and continue his acting career. In 1998 he went on tour and recorded a comedy special, titled I'm Telling You for the Last Time . The process of developing and performing new material at clubs around the world was chronicled in a 2002 documentary, Comedian , which also featured fellow comic Orny Adams and was directed by Christian Charles. On February 25, 2007, Seinfeld appeared at the 79th Academy Awards as the presenter for "Best Documentary." Before announcing the nominations, he did a short stand-up comedy routine about the unspoken agreement between movie theater owners and movie patrons. On October 4, 2007, Seinfeld made a brief return to NBC, guest- starring as himself in the 30 Rock episode "SeinfeldVision." On February 24, 2008, at the 80th Academy Awards, Seinfeld appeared as the voice of his Bee Movie animated character Barry, presenting "Best Animated Short." Before announcing the nominees, he showed a montage of film clips featuring bees, saying that they were some of his early work (as Barry). In 2012 Seinfeld started a Web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee , in which he would pick up a fellow comedian in a different car each episode and take them out for coffee and conversation. -
