It was rather bumper edition, with thanks to Lucy & Rodney, who were hero’s for helping to put it together. We will continue to try to hand deliver copies as much as possible as postage (£1 10p) and other costs are rising. I guess those who made the dinner will think it a fun weekend. Despite the weather man telling us we were in for also sorts of nasty conditions they did not materialise and Saturday was a reasonably acceptable day. The evening was a real jolly, the AGM though starting let passed without too much mudslinging (it is getting a little serious) and there certainly was too much booze, we drank some of the surplus at the Friends of St Julitta’s medieval dinner at the end of the month, so it was not wasted! The Fireworks worked, the bus turned up on time and the Tyn y Coed put together an acceptable dinner. There was some talk that the Mummeries Blood gets better each year – but sadly this was not a unanimous decision. In these days of Marketing I do think that the Gorphwysfa Marketing Department could do a better job of selling the product to the consumers; I will speak to them. Penny and Peter did a brilliant job of organising the evening – a challenge beyond most when one considers the consumers that they have to deal with, many thanks for providing a really lovely evening. Some of the more dedicated spent a few real Snowdonia hours in the Copse, but more of this elsewhere. What is this thing called ‘spare time' which is supposed to be readily available when retirement arrives at the front door. If it does exist at present it seems to be in short supply - just past my 75th year should be a time for ‘kicking my heals’ but the onset of Ruskin College has somewhat slowed down any exploring or ne challenges unless they are historically based! Amazing isn't it, just think of all the things to do to fill up ‘that spare time’; living in Oxford there is a world of culture to experience, and all those neglected hobbies. But I would recommend being involved in education is a very useful way to fill in any ‘spare time’ you might have, although within the Gorphwysfa I am somewhat writing the obvious to the already totally committed! I have just ‘struggled’ through some nasty exams, the system is trying hard to make me an academic but there is a good chance that it will fail! The last term has been interesting, I have tasted American History (some will know I hate America and all it stands for) but amazingly it was interesting that at the end of term I had a little feeling of sadness that I was leaving American history behind. 3 New Year is again on the agenda – I am sure you will be impressed with Bryn Gwynant; the wealthy Midlands industrialist who built it did a very good job. We are somewhat a little tighter for space but in my YHA days it used to accommodate 60+ persons and we are only 46 on New Year’s Eve so all should be well! Because of the shortage of small rooms we are this year incorporating Hafod y Gwynt into the accommodation, it is the annex to our main accommodation; the ‘Leicester gang’ are taking it over. Even by using HyG I do apologise to those who asked for a small room and who I have not been able to accommodate. Bryn Gwynant sits on a fantastic spot; make sure you soak up the view out of the dining room window. Sadly no night orienteering! I know that quite a few will be devastated but it will be something to look forward to in New Year 2014. The Llydaw race is very much in place all that is now needed is a few club members to enter; I know the anticipated thrill of sprinting up the Miners Track will be the incentive to line up on the start line. The more observant of the readers of this Journal will notice changes in this issue. Frances has shown me how to put together the whole document so allowing it to have numbered pages and a properly numbered ‘contents’. Isn’t it clever? Mr or Mrs Microsoft Word must have been thinking about the Gorphwysfa Club when they put the software together, I need to drop them a line of thanks when I get the chance! I trust you find this Journal full of good interesting articles. Many thanks for all that have contributed – I do hope you enjoyed reliving your experiences of adventures in 2013 and other times as you wrote. In the Meet Diary 2014 there are The Gorphwysfa Club enjoying the many more events that will bring the hills under gruelling Oxfordshire Meet in June your boots, if you find that life is too busy to join in then change your life! The trip to the Dolomites in July is a definite not to be missed event – book soon and find out how right I am! The Gorphwysfa is a very special group of people, we are lucky that they have crossed our path. The ‘ups’ that sometimes appear on the horizon are more easily tackled within our ‘community’, so stick with it, There is much comfort in High Hills , and even more when in such pleasant company, Have a Good New Year, and seek the rainbow around the corner, Harvey. 4 Gorphwysfa MEETS DIARY 2014 www.gorphwysfa.org 27 12 13 Draft 2 st New Year 2013/2014- 29/30/31 December We are at Bryn Gwynant Youth hostel this year – whilst mayor renovation work is taking place at Pen y Pass! Watch this space for further details. st th The 41 Welsh 1000 metres Race Saturday June 6 - 7 2014 The Race weekend is always a huge social gathering again this year we are considering changes which will improve the route and the race. Again the mighty organisational wheels are turning, note our website (www.welsh1000m.org) all details available, thanks to Kate and Jean, the online entries system worked perfectly last year. Its only 7 months away so please get in touch if you can help; this year we will again at some considerable expense book accommodation in the Plas y Brenin Moelwyn cottage this year (see it on the web), so there should be no need for anyone to B&B or use a hotel. Put this date in your Diary it is an important/vital/not to be missed event. It certainly is special, and it is brilliant that we as a small informal group can put together a National sporting event of this nature, do you best to add a little to the gathering. Please let Harvey know if you want accommodation at HyG; we will transfer the overflow to Moelwyn Cottage a self- catering house as an annex to Hafod y Gwynt if needed.
