Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order. -

These successes sometimes were helped by wet roads. The major season-long exceptions to the rule “Power 1st “ are:- (A).The 1959 -1960 Grand Prix Cars-of-the-Year (Egs. 38 & 39, Coventry Climax engines) These were the fruits of the Cooper’s (father Charles and son John) reintroduction to GP racing of the mid-mounted engine - but this time with a stable chassis - which gave frontal area and weight advantages more than offsetting the lower power. Since 1959 every classic Grand Prix has been won by this chassis concept (see Note 66) bar one (the 1960 Italian, not seriously contested against the front-engined Ferrari because the other significant teams boycotted the use of the Monza banked track variant). (B).The 1966 – 1967 Grand Prix Cars-of-the-Year (Egs. 45 & 46, Repco engines) The driver who was champion in 1959 - 1960, Jack Brabham, was the constructor of these cars bearing his name and, with characteristic shrewdness, he opted for a simple design of engine at the start of a new formula which gained victories while other more elaborate competing units were un- developed or not even ready. The Ferrari team which should have been ready and able in 1966 quarrelled with its 1964 Champion driver, John Surtees, and let him go after he won the 2nd race. -

The season saw no less than nine different riders take the chequered flag and stand on top of the podium with Carbion AB Motoracing’s Czech rider Karel Abraham taking his only win of the year at the finale. Toni Elias came out on top with seven race wins, 3 pole position starts and 271 points to be the first ever Moto2 World Champion, his consistency giving him the title three rounds previously at Sepang in Malaysia. Despite recording no race wins it was Spanish Mapfre Aspar rider Julian Simon who took second in the championship. Simon took eight podium finishes to secure 201 points, just two points clear of Fimmco Speed Up’s Andrea Iannone on 199 points, the Italian rider managing three race wins and a further five podiums over the year. The 2011 test season got straight underway the day after the Valencia race, 35 Moto2 riders took to the track for the first official test to evaluate bikes and development Dunlop tyres for the following season. Some riders, notably Toni Elias and Karel Abraham, are moving up to the MotoGP class, but several newcomers - including Bradley Smith and his new team-mate Mike Di Meglio were making their first laps on the Tech3 Moto2 bikes they will ride next year. -

A comparison has been undertaken between car and bike racing, as represented by Formula One and MotoGp, to establish any differences in approach. The initial historical element of the research revealed that motor sport had been sponsored by vehicle manufacturers since the origins of the petrol combustion engine in the late 19th century. Any suggestion that sponsorship of motor sport is a recent, late 20th century science has been dispelled. The investigation found that the sponsors of top level car racing place major importance on achieving awareness for their brands through media exposure, particularly television. -
