Rasoul Aliakbari Bibliographies of A Thousand and One Nights and the Formation of Modern Nationhood: A Study in Comparative Print Culture by Rasoul Aliakbari A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Comparative Literature University of Alberta © Rasoul Aliakbari, 2017 Aliakbari ii ABSTRACT: This doctoral dissertation examines the print cultures of the Arabian Nights (aka A Thousand and One Nights) in Britain, the US, Egypt, and Iran, variably from the late eighteenth to the twenty first centuries. This examination, by way of textual analysis, contextual and historical scrutiny, and digital bibliographic examination and compilation, demonstrates the various usages of the Arabian Nights in modern nation-formation projects in the above-said contexts, challenges Benedict Anderson’s homogenous and solid notion of nation-building, and shows the occurrence of this phenomenon in a heterogeneous modality at the intersection of literary Orientalism, social classes, discourses, gender, and trans-regional dialectics. The chapter on the Arabian Nights in Britain demonstrates how this publication was aimed at non-elite readers to expand bourgeois readership and to bolster the notions of Englishness and Britishness across lower social strata during the nineteenth century. The chapter on US’s history of the Arabian Nights documents and examines the re-mediation, trans-mediations, and uses of this story collection in printed materials in designating national American subjectivity while territorial expansionism, technological upsurge, consumerism, political reconfiguration were under way during the antebellum period. In the chapter on Egypt, the renewed significance of the Arabian Nights is explained by reference to female writers’ repurposing of its tales in forging modern Arabian and Egyptian role models for their female readers on the emerging national landscape in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Iran’s chapter demonstrates the usage of the Arabian Nights by literary and cultural elites, starting from before the mid- nineteenth century to date, to perpetuate the nationalist discourse of Perso-centrism, and simultaneously shows the Ottoman and Indian grounds via which the Arabian Nights had been taken to Persia/Iran in the nineteenth century. The dissertation brings to light under-documented histories of the Arabian Nights, shows the utilizations of the story collection in nation-formation Aliakbari iii projects in the selected cultures of modernity, challenges Anderson’s unnuanced theorization of modernity, and ultimately suggests a new scholarly framework, namely comparative print culture, at the crossroads of print culture and comparative literatures studies for future investigations of print modernities.     1882 NEW ARABIAN NIGHTS Robert Louis Stevenson Stevenson, Robert Louis (1850-1894) - Scottish novelist, poet, and essayist, best known for his adventure stories. Stevenson was a sickly man (he died of tuberculosis) who nevertheless led an adventurous life. He spent his last five years on the island of Samoa as a planter and chief of the natives. Abstract Victorian Egyptology and the Making of a Colonial Field Science, 1850-1906 Meira Gold This dissertation provides a new account of the origins of archaeological fieldwork in the Nile Delta. It considers how practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds circulated knowledge about the built environment of pharaonic ruins: monuments, architecture, burials, and soil mounds that remained in situ. I trace the development of Egyptology from an activity that could be practiced long-distance through a network of informants to one that required first-hand field experience.

Henley was born in Gloucester and educated at the Crypt Grammar School. The school was a poor relation of the Cathedral School, and Henley indicated its shortcomings in his article (Pall Mall Magazine, Nov. 1900) on T. E. Brown the poet, who was headmaster there for a brief period. Brown's appointment was a stroke of luck for Henley, for whom it represented a first acquaintance with a man of genius. "He was singularly kind to me at a moment when I needed kindness even more than I needed encouragement." Brown did him the essential service of lending him books. Henley was no classical scholar, but his knowledge and love of literature were vital. After suffering tuberculosis as a boy, he found himself, in 1874, aged twenty- five, an inmate of the hospital at Edinburgh. From there he sent to the Cornhill Magazine where he wrote poems in irregular rhythms, describing with poignant force his experiences in hospital. Leslie Stephen, then editor, visited his contributor in hospital and took Robert Louis Stevenson, another recruit of the Cornhill, with him. The meeting between Stevenson and Henley, and the friendship of which it was the beginning, form one of the best-known episodes in English literature (see Stevenson's letter to Mrs Sitwell, Jan. 1875, and Henley's poems "An Apparition" and "Envoy to Charles Baxter").

The story, set in fifteenth-century Paris, concerns a dissolute evening’s drinking which ends with a murder; the poet (and rogue) Francis Villon flees the scene, finding shelter in the home of the Lord of Brisetout, who takes it upon himself to lecture Villon on his moral failings.

    The Stevenson Circle Archer, William (1856-1924), journalist and critic. He was dramatic critic for Figaro, and later for the World and the Star. An admirer of Ibsen's work, he was instrumental in introduc- ing Ibsen's plays to the British public. Archer and RLS fre- quently corresponded, and Archer wrote a perceptive obituary, 'In Memoriam R.L.S.' (New Review, January 1895). Balfour, Dr Lewis (1777-1860), grandfather of RLS. RLS took his middle name of Lewis (later Louis) from his grandfather. As a boy RLS delighted in visiting Colin ton Manse, the home of his grandfather from 1823 to 1860. In his essay 'The Manse', included in MP, he gives an affectionate tribute to his recol- lections of the house and of his grandfather. Balfour, Sir Thomas Graham (1858-1929). One of RLS's many cousins, Balfour made his home at Vailima during the last two and a half years of RLS's life. His biography, published in 1901, is an extremely readable, competent and well-researched account. It suffers, however, from having been prepared so soon after Stevenson's death and is insufficiently detached from the protective influence of his widow. It remains an in- dispensable account of RLS and his circle, though inevitably some of Balfour's judgements have been superseded by later scholarship. Barrie, Sir James Matthew (1860-1937), novelist and playright. His first novel The Little Minister (1891), was much admired by RLS. Barrie was also the author of A Window in Thrums, Margaret Ogilvy, and Sentimental Tommy. His plays include The Admirable Crichton, Peter Pan and What Every Woman Knows.

Although he appears to beindulging in purely aesthetic rapture, he is equipped with optical drawing devices and with many other instruments for observation, tracing and measuring. A Camera Lucida is arrayed on a tripod on the right, surrounded by a telescope, a setsquare, a ruler, a pair of compasses and other devices, while in the background a tent-type Camera Obscura is in use. This motif belonged to Carl Jacob Lindström’s well-known satiric, illustrated book I Stranieri in Italia, printed and distributed in Naples in 1830.2 Moreover, Lindström produced countless further exemplars of this scene in watercolour, engraving and lithography.

Burroughs vs. the Quran, and Tripping with Allah. It differs from earlier critical writing on Knight by taking a Bakhtinian approach to his ground-breaking first novel The Taqwacores and its attempt to open a dialogue on reforming American Islam, focusing on Knight’s relationship to the Beats and their often overlooked Islamic discourses as his ideal model for this artistic/social reform, and tracing a shift in his work from reformist, documentary fiction to self-focused, “cool” autobiography. It argues that what enables Knight to initiate a punk reading of Islam, to cut-up the Quran, and to prescribe ayahuasca (a psychoactive vine native to Amazonian Peru) to pilgrims going to Mecca is his interpretation of the famous statement attributed to Hassan Sabbah: “Nothing is true; everything is permitted.” Meanwhile, Knight’s approach differs from that of many writers from Rabelais and Dostoyevsky to Nietzsche and Burroughs who have cited or paraphrased this statement. While these writers describe how devastating it would be to live in a godless world where everything is permitted with no hereafter, Knight stresses a vague “coolness” in Sabbah’s statement which he uses to guide his own style of living.
