Gone to Texas!! Gone to Texas!! 1. Analyze the Gone to Texas Cartoon. Have students list their observations and then draw an inference as to what may be going on in the image. Share out as a class. You will soon uncover what the GTT stands for. Gone to Texas. The questions is why are people coming to Texas? What are their requirements? What benefits do they have for coming to Texas? What effect will this have on Mexican Texas? (5-10 min) 2. Assign paragraphs 1, 2, & 3 for the jigsaw reading (click here for more information on how to implement the jigsaw strategy). Some groups will have repeating numbers. Make sure you introduce the new vocabulary terms during this step (Anglo-American, land grant, empresario, etc.) Ask students to share their predictions about the reading as a table talk then as a whole class (incorporate a Kagan strategy to select students.) (10 min.) 3. Provide students 10-15 minutes to read on their assigned paragraph and to create their summary and visual representations. (10-15 min.) 4. Break students up into expert groups. During this time they should share their summaries and come to a consensus on their summaries and how they plan to teach the material to their home groups. After students have shared with expert groups, have them return to their home groups to share their information. (5 min.) 4. Allow students to share their information with their home group. As students are learning about the other paragraphs, they will complete their graphic organizer on the new information. (If time permits, they can also create a visual representation for the new information they have learned. (10 min.) 5. Close the lesson by having students share out what they have learned. Utilize a table talk to have students discuss the following questions: How did Mexico attempt to colonize Texas? What were the requirements? Why did Anglo- Americans come to Texas? Do you think the Anglos will follow the Mexicans rules and requirements? Students will answer the quick write at the bottom of their paper. (5 min.) Texas History: G. Garcia Lesson for Anglo Colonization What do you see in this image? Based on your observations, what do you think has happened? Gone to Texas!! Anglo-American (a person from the U.S. of English background) colonization in Texas took place between 1821 and 1835. During this time, Mexico colonized Texas using the empresario system. Mexico required Anglo-Americans from the U.S. to become Catholic, hardworking people, and willing to become Mexican citizens in exchange for generous land grants. Mexico expected the new settlers from the U.S. to increase economic development and help Mexican land discourage the aggressive Native grants given to Americans. Empresarios. Anglo-Americans were attracted to Mexican Texas because of inexpensive land. In the United States, new land cost $1.25 an acre for a minimum of 80 acres, which would cost a total of $100. That money had to be paid the day you bought the land. In Mexican Texas, new land cost 4 cents an acre and settlers could get up to 4,605 acres, which would cost a total of $184 which could be paid over six years. Another reason that Anglo-American settlers moved to Mexican Texas was the thought that the United States would eventually buy eastern Texas from Mexico. A third attraction was that Mexico and the United States had no agreements allowing creditors to collect debts or to return fugitives. Therefore, Texas was safe for the many that faced seizure of their property and even debtors' prison. Men loaded their families and belongings into wagons and headed for Mexican Texas leaving a G.T.T. (Gone to Texas) note for the debt collectors. Creditors could not follow them to Mexican Texas so Anglo settlers could take the opportunity to start over. Land Grants - Land given to an empresario from the Mexican government to settle families. Empresario – a person who makes arrangements to bring settlers (people) to a colony.     The Underground Railroad: A Study of the Routes From Texas to Mexico Georgia Redonet Long Middle School INTRODUCTION The Underground Railroad gave the hope of freedom to enslaved people living in the American South. Most Americans are familiar with the basic workings of the Railroad and most know the story of Harriet Tubman, one of its famous conductors. The intricacies of the plans for escape are not as familiar to most people. Few are aware that not everyone ran away to the northern states and Canada. Texas was too far to the west to make escaping to the American North a practical choice. Texas slaves were more likely to runaway to Mexico. Whether the term ―Underground Railroad‖ was actually used to describe the pathways followed by those escaping to freedom in Mexico is not clear. I have chosen to use it in my title because it is recognizable to most people as an identification of escape routes from servitude in the United States. The lesson plans for this curriculum unit will be centered on geography, the process of planning, and research. There will be a contemporary connection to this unit of study. Many of our students at Jane Long Middle School in Houston, Texas are refugees. Their families also had to make plans for escape. They have also gained freedom at a price. Like those who escaped slavery, they too have been separated from family and friends and may never see them again. Any projects involving my students‘ experiences will be on a voluntary basis. For some, the memories may be too recent to share with others.

    THE IMPACT OF MEXICAN DEVELOPMENTS ON THE ECONOMIC GROWTH OF SOUTH TEXAS 1848-1930 Armando Alonzo Texas A & M University INTRODUCTION With the end of the U.S.-Mexican War, a new international border was created along the Rio Grande that led to the rise of a dynamic binational frontier in South Texas. Settled by the Spaniards in the eighteenth century, South Texas encompasses the territory along the river from Brownsville to Del Rio, northward to San Antonio and southeasterly to Victoria. The region can be divided into three districts: 1. the Lower Valley between the Nueces River and the Río Grande; 2. the Upper Rio Grande in the Eagle Pass and Del Rio areas; and 3. the San Antonio district including lands towards the Gulf Coast (See Map 1).1 This study examines the rise of this binational border during the period from 1848 to 1930 with emphasis on economic development in South Texas and Mexico’s impact on it. This long-view approach allows for comparison of two eras in which thousands of Mexican immigrants settled in South Texas. This history is divided into two natural periods: 1848 to 1900 and 1900 to 1930, a division that permits us to see continuity and change from one era to another. While this study benefits from a growing historiography on border and transnational studies, the literature relevant to Texas and its border with Mexico is limited and generalized. There are indeed older histories of the Mexican immigrants and their adaptation to life in the U.S., while the newer studies emphasize the twentieth century and are concerned with specific themes, communities, or regions.2 Rarely do any of these accounts present the story of the Tejano or native-born of Mexican descent and of the Mexican immigrant.

The Cherokees, a number of whom had moved westward from their Tennessee homes and relocated on the White River, complained to the governor of Missouri Territory in 1813 that bad white men were stealing horses from them and trying to get the tribe to stir up trouble with "honest" whites. Our major concern will be to explain how, under what circumstances, and with what consequences Mexican-origin persons and communities from Texas enter the socio-economy of the United States. The course meets the cultural diversity requirement in the new core curriculum that calls for at least one-third of its content to address the culture, perspectives, and history of one or more underrepresented groups in the United States. The course meets this requirement with its focus on Mexicans as an underrepresented group and their relations with African Americans and communities in Mexico. The course also provides students opportunities to advance their critical thinking and communication skills, as well as a sense of personal and social responsibility. Reading and writing assignments and class discussions will advance critical thinking and history writing skills. Required attendance and expected academic honesty will promote a sense of personal responsibility. Numerous examples from history—including the practice of hard work and public service as acts of family and community responsibility and the work of attorneys who worked tirelessly to extend the constitutional guarantees of the 14th amendment to their communities—will be used to ground the sense of social responsibility in the course.

    names, Vol. 59 No. 3, September, 2011, 139–51 Re-Naming Texas: Competing Mexican and Anglo Placenaming in Texas, 1821–1836 Gene Rhea Tucker University of Texas at Arlington, USA When Mexico gained its independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821, numerous placenames across the country changed to become uniquely “Mexican.” This “national project” of Mexicanization attempted to foster a nation-wide sense of mexicanidad, highlighting the country’s Amerindian past and commemorating its patriotic heroes. Communities and provinces of the former New Spain chose new toponyms to emphasize their newfound Mexican identity. This process extended to the northern province of Texas, as officials and settlers tried to utilize typically Mexican placenames in an attempt to Mexicanize the province. The toponyms used by settlers in Texas, however, reflected the stresses between its Mexican and Anglo inhabitants. Though some settlers tried to prove their loyalty to Mexico, most immi- grants from the United States, with little respect for their new homeland, clung tenaciously to their culture and refused to assimilate. This included their use of the English language and typically American placenames. Mexico lost the power to name Texas, and it eventually lost power in Texas. keywords Mexico, Texas, toponyms, Mexicanization, nationalism Toponyms, like any other cultural artifact, can illustrate the history of a place and the people who lived there. Nation-states have utilized placenames to project their power over the landscape and the population under their control. They can use the power of names to create a sense of nationalism, honoring heroes and history. One popular example is the Russian city of St Petersburg, which, for political reasons, went from St Petersburg to Petrograd to Leningrad and back to St Petersburg over eight decades in the twentieth century.

Bruce Dickson Head of Department, David Vaught May 2015 Major Subject: History Copyright 2015 Ralph Edward Morales III ABSTRACT Following the Texas Revolution, the Tejano community made a conscious decision to begin the long process towards accommodation within the American system. This included political alliances between the Tejano landholding elite and major Anglo Texan political figures, such as Sam Houston and John “Rip” Ford. During this era, the Tejano community made alliances of convenience with Anglo Texan politicians in support of the Southern Confederacy during the American Civil War. This alliance is best explained by parallels drawn by Tejano politicians between the ideals of Mexican Federalism and the local rule promised by the Southern Confederacy. By the turn of the twentieth century, Anglo-Tejano relations had resumed their antebellum status quo of racial violence and societal marginalization had returned. It is during the early twentieth century that the Tejano community made the decision to embrace a Mexican American Identity that emphasized political participation and loyalty to the United States. The Mexican American identity in the Tejano community was galvanized during these years by the upheaval caused by the Mexican Revolution, the Plan of San Diego and the First World War.
