Studierte in Dresden, hielt sich 1893–96 in den USA auf und ließ sich anschließend in Wien nieder, wo ihn die Theorien O. Wagners stark beeinflussten. In seinen Artikeln um die Jahrhundertwende stellte er sich gegen den Jugendstil und die Wiener Werkstätte („Ornament und Verbrechen“, 1908). Eine heftige öffentliche Diskussion entbrannte um das Haus am Michaelerplatz in Wien (1909–11); gleichzeitig schuf Loos private Villen, anhand derer er 1904–10 seinen „Raumplan“ (Verteilung der Räume über dem Grundriss, in Größe und Volumen ihrer Funktion entsprechend) entwickelte. Die äußere Form seiner Villen entwickelte Loos in seiner Spätzeit immer mehr zum klaren Kubus (Haus Müller, Prag 1928–30). Trotzdem ist sein bekanntestes Projekt ein Hochhaus in Form einer dorischen Säule (Wettbewerb für das Bürohaus der „Chicago Tribune“, 1922). 1924–28 lebte Loos in der Szene der Pariser Avantgarde (Haus für T. Tzara, Paris 1925–26). Seine Entwürfe wie seine Schriften prägten die Entwicklung der Architektur im 20. Jahrhundert nachhaltig.
