Since its creation by Congress in 2001, the fund has supported 377 cultural preservation projects in developing countries—-- an impressive achievement representing contributions of more than $9 million to cultural preservation worldwide. Through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, the Department provides funding in response to cultural preservation needs around the globe, and the United States demonstrates its respect for the cultural heritage of other countries. The variety of projects supported by the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation continues to expand. In 2006, the fund supported, for example, the documentation of the remains of St. Nicholas Church in Stolac and Ferhadija Mosque in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, both destroyed during the ethnic strife and conflict of the last decade. The fund also supported the restoration of the impressive Alamgiri Gate, the entrance to Lahore Fort in Pakistan through which thousands of people pass each day. In the Americas, the fund supported the preservation of recently discovered Maya murals in Guatemala—the most significant discovery in Mesoamerica in this generation. Also among the 85 projects funded in 2006 are efforts to document regional music and dance traditions in Madagascar; to conserve a collection of altars, ancestral tables, carved wooden chests, and other Buddhist and ances- tral devotional objects in Vietnam; and to stabilize the foundation and retaining walls of the 18th-century El Pacha Mosque in the Algerian city of Oran. Joseph A. Mussomeli, U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia, said “Without knowledge of our past and respect for our history, we are rootless and lost. The past ought to be an inspiration and a source of creativity for those who live today.” We heartily agree with Ambassador Mussomeli and are pleased that the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation can support that vital endeavor. Established by Congress in 2001 (Public Law 106–553) and administered by the Cultural Heritage Center within the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation is the only program of its kind in the U.S. government. In establishing the fund, Congress underscored the importance of cultural preservation in the advance- ment of U.S. diplomatic goals. About the Cultural Heritage Center he Cultural Heritage Center supports the foreign affairs functions of the Department that relate to the preservation of cultural heritage. CS: Yeah small tour, started off in Holland and then came to the U.K. Played I guess two nights ago at the Barbican in St Luke's on a double bill with Yasuaki Shimizu, went into sort of your hometown territory in Colchester, performing in Scotland after this and then going back to Japan where I live. VB: Just so I'm going to ask you some questions that start a while ago. You studied at Cal Arts under Morton Subotnick and James Tenney. Just wondering what was it like to be working at that time in that location? CS: Well, it was a really exciting time for me - I was just fresh out of high school, I was an undergraduate, eighteen years old and starting out, I hadn't had a lot of exposure to contemporary or experimental music but I had come across some electronic music and found it fascinating so I was interested in pursuing that.

    PASSAGE THROUGH ANTIQUITY (SERENISSIMA) Here is a passage through antiquity, an incomparable journey with a wealth of sites on offer including biblical landmarks, Crusader castles, Egyptian temples and tombs as well as the magnificent Nabatean city of Petra. Our first call is the Cypriot port of Limassol from where we sail to Israel for three and a half days of exploration as we discover an extraordinary collection of both classical and Biblical sites. Following a transit of the Suez Canal, one of the world’s greatest feats of civil engineering, we spend time in Egypt exploring some of the great monuments of the Pharaohs, the divine kings of thirty dynasties who ruled Egypt for some thirty-five centuries. See the great temples of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx and spend some time in Cairo’s magnificent Egyptian Museum. We continue to Jordan where we leave the MS Serenissima and spend three nights in five star hotels. From the desert sands of Wadi Rum, to the grandeur of Petra and the mystical Dead Sea, Jordan is steeped in history and awe inspiring beauty. Petra, a city set deep in the Edom mountains and lost to Western ‘civilisation’ for hundreds of years was hewn directly from the rock by the Nabateans and is an amazing feat of engineering and construction.

In spite of its relatively open, democratic, and pluralistic (though flawed and military-dominated) political system, however, for most of the post- WWII period Turkey’s economic structure and patterns of development bore an uncanny resemblance to the regional norm of underperformance and unfulfilled potentials. Although largely bereft of abundant natural resources and export commodities, Turkey was nonetheless saddled with a state-dominated, inward looking, uncompetitive, corrupt, and inefficient economy that was beset with anemic growth and chronically high levels of inflation, unemployment, disparity, mismanagement, debt, and deficit. The primary foundations for economic takeoff, including the dismantling of import substituting industrialization, encouragement of private initiative, retreat from autarky, and embrace of export led growth, were laid during the premiership/presidency of Turgut Ozal in the 1980’s. Nevertheless, the 1980’s were also a time of turmoil and disruptive transition during which inflation averaged 75 percent and the ratio of government debt to GDP was consistently and excessively high. The period also witnessed the emergence of cozy and unsustainable relations between the government, bureaucracy, banks, and corporations, which paved the way for subsequent financial scandals and crises.
