Seeding Controversy: Did Israel Invent the Cherry Tomato? Abstract This research brief explores the controversial history of the cherry tomato and analyzes its role in the construction of Israel's national identity. Since 2003, mentions of Israel having “invented” the cherry tomato have appeared in both Israeli and international media. However, such claims have sparked outrage on various blogs and websites, and questions have been raised about the veracity of Israel's claims—as well as about the true origin of the cherry tomato. I explore the history of the cherry tomato, tracing mentions of it from the Renaissance period to modern times. In addition, I clarify the assertions of Israeli scientists credited with the development of the cherry tomato—that their research transformed the cherry tomato into a commodity in the 1980s. Finally, I discuss the cherry tomato claim in light of the Israeli government's hasbara (Hebrew for “explanation”) efforts, which attempt to counter negative images of Israel in the international press. While much previous scholarship on food and nationalism has focused on the relationship between the cultivation, preparation, or consumption of a food and the construction of a national identity, the present work focuses on the relationship between the food's invention narrative and national identity. -

Passage Through Antiquity (Serenissima)
PASSAGE THROUGH ANTIQUITY (SERENISSIMA) Here is a passage through antiquity, an incomparable journey with a wealth of sites on offer including biblical landmarks, Crusader castles, Egyptian temples and tombs as well as the magnificent Nabatean city of Petra. We have planned the journey for November when temperatures will be pleasant for exploring and with the aid of our knowledgeable local guides and excellent Guest Speaker, we will learn of some fascinating civilisations. Our first call is the Cypriot port of Limassol from where we sail to Israel for three and a half days of exploration as we discover an extraordinary collection of both classical and Biblical sites. Following a transit of the Suez Canal, one of the world’s greatest feats of civil engineering, we spend time in Egypt exploring some of the great monuments of the Pharaohs, the divine kings of thirty dynasties who ruled Egypt for some thirty-five centuries. See the great temples of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx and spend some time in Cairo’s magnificent Egyptian Museum. We continue to Jordan where we leave the MS Serenissima and spend three nights in five star hotels. From the desert sands of Wadi Rum, to the grandeur of Petra and the mystical Dead Sea, Jordan is steeped in history and awe inspiring beauty. Petra, a city set deep in the Edom mountains and lost to Western ‘civilisation’ for hundreds of years was hewn directly from the rock by the Nabateans and is an amazing feat of engineering and construction. -

A4 Israeli Inventions EN.Indd
îÙÝàÔìíÝîÙÔêâØ Israeli Inventions "All the deeds of mankind were once dreams; And later become dreams again." Subject: Israeli inventions (Theodore Herzl) Age Group: teenagers and older Objectives: • The participants will learn about Israeli inventions. • The participants will strengthen their connection with Israel by learning about the innovations taking place in Israel. • The participants will complete the program with an enhanced desire to dream big, to be entrepreneurs, to be inventors, and to change the world. Activity Length: approximately 95 minutes Equipment: • Letters from the slogan: ISRAEL – THE START UP NATION • Assignment cards and riddles • Writing instruments • Cards for signatures • Food- cherry tomatoes, ptitim (Israeli couscous), bamba, soup croutons, oil, lemon, spices and other vegetables • Bowls, Cutting knives, silverware, plates The Activity: Stage one: introduction, assignments, and riddles (75 minutes) Stage two: Determining the winning team, and discovering the slogan (5 minutes) Stage three: Summarizing the activity (10 minutes) Explanation: We divide the participants into groups of four. Each group receives a card with a riddle or assignment. They solve the riddles by searching for relevant information on Google. All the groups receive identical cards. The group that completes their assignment in the best possible way, or that answers their riddle first, receives a letter which composes part of the slogan "ISRAEL – THE START UP NATION." The participants must not be told, at this stage, what words will be formed from the letters they receive. They will have to discover this for themselves at the end of the activity. The group with the most letters wins the game. At the end of this activity, the participants stand in a row and hold the letters so the slogan can be read, and a photo taken.
