HYDE PARK, CHICAGO, IL. (September 25, 2010) – Doc Films, the historic student-run film society at the University of Chicago, announced its Fall 2010 calendar today. Each night from Sunday through Thursday features a film series with a unifying theme, be it a director, a time, a place, or a concept.

SUNDAYS from October 3 to November 28 bring the first in a two-quarter D.W. Griffith retrospective. This fall will begin with Griffith’s early work making shorts at Biograph from 1908- 1913 (10/3) and follow his subsequent career, including, of course, a screening of his groundbreaking and highly inflammatory 1915 feature film, BIRTH OF A NATION (10/24). Act One of the Griffith series concludes with (11/28), starring Lillian Gish. The series will continue through Doc’s winter calendar.

MONDAYS from September 27 to November 29 focus on post-classical westerns from the late sixties through the early eighties, as the genre moves beyond its roots to explore new possibilities, such as ’s attempt to allegorize the Vietnam War in ULZANA’S RAID (10/4) and ’s great revisionist western, THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (11/15), in which he also stars.

TUESDAYS from September 28 to November 30 will showcase the films of avant-garde master Stan Brakhage, including two screenings of hand-painted short films (10/19 and 11/16) and the four-part sound series FAUSTFILM (10/26).

WEDNESDAYS from September 29 to December 1 are occupied by the films of , from his second feature, the 1955 noir KILLER’S KISS (9/27), which the director later disowned, to his adaptation of Nabokov’s LOLITA (10/13), the sweeping and unnerving 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (10/27) and his final film, EYES WIDE SHUT (12/1)

THURSDAY nights from September 30 to December 2 house Doc’s Bildungskino series, which features cinematic adaptations of the Bildungsroman, or classic coming-of-age stories. Included are George Cukor’s Depression-era adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s (9/30), starring , and the classic TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (11/4)

THURSDAY nights from September 30 to December 2 also feature American regional horror films. These were low budget horror films made outside the film industry by local Doc Films Fall 2010

crews and include S.F. Browrigg’s 1973 Texas-produced DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT (10/7) and the Louisiana production NIGHT OF THE STRANGLER (10/21)
