Louis Maimbourg Un Historien Des Religions Du Xviie Siècle Louis Maimbourg Un historien des religions du XVIIe siècle Louis Maimbourg (1610-1686) On peut lire dans Le grand dictionnaire historique ou le mélange curieux de l’histoire sacrée et profane de Louis Moreri que Louis Maimbourg, né en 1610, à Nancy, « de parens nobles & riches, avoit l’esprit fort vif & fort aisé, & s’est rendu celebre, tant par ses prédications, que par plusieurs livres d’histoires qu’il a donnez au public* ». Il a publié, entre autres titres, une Histoire de l’Arianisme depuis sa naissance jusqu’à sa fin : avec l’origine et le progrès de l’heresie des Sociniens, une Histoire de l’heresie des iconoclastes et de la translation de l’empire aux François, une Histoire de la decadence de l’empire après Charlemagne, et des differends des empereurs avec les papes au sujet des investitures et de l’indépendance, une Histoire du pontificat de saint Leon le Grand et une Histoire du Calvinisme. Ses premières « histoires », écrit Louis Moreri, « furent bien reçues du public ; elles se faisoient lire agreablement, & avoient un certain air de roman qui plaisoit à ceux qui n’étoient pas à portée de connoître les défauts de ces histoires mais peu à peu le monde est revenu de ce goût » (Moreri, tome IV, 1732, p.808). Louis Maimbourg s’explique sur cet « air de roman » dans l’avertissement de l’Histoire de l’heresie des iconoclastes et de la translation de l’empire aux François (1674) : « …si j’ai tâché de faire en sorte que ma manière d’écrire l’Histoire donnât le plaisir du Roman, par la diversité des choses, & des aventures que l’on y lit, & qui tiennent l’esprit en suspens, par l’enchaînement & la liaison que l’on y voit des unes avec les autres ; j’ai pris aussi tres-grand soin de lui donner tout le solide de l’exacte verité, autant qu’un Historien fidelle & laborieux la peut découvrir. » Il ajoute que sans s’arrêter aux « ruisseaux », il va « jusques aux sources, dans lesquelles, en trouvant la verité, [il a] découvert plus d’une fois, ou l’infidélité, ou la negligence de quelques-uns ». Pierre Bayle, tout en pensant qu’« un Historien passionné n’est guere croyable », reconnaîtra que « nous n’avons pas droit de croire que Mr. Maimbourg est un Savant superficiel, sous prétexte que ses Histoires ne traitent pas profondément les questions de Théologie, ou de Critique Ecclésiastique qu’elles rencontrent dans leur chemin ». Il estimera néanmoins qu’« il n’y a point lieu de conclure, qu’il est rempli d’une profonde érudition. » (Critique générale de l’Histoire du Calvinisme de Mr. Maimbourg, 1682). Entré en 1626 dans la Compagnie de Jésus, Louis Maimbourg en sortit en 1682, « par ordre du Pape Innocent XI mécontent de ce qu’il avoit écrit contre la cour de Rome, en faveur des propositions de l’assemblée du Clergé de France tenue l’an 1682 » (Dictionnaire universel, dogmatique, canonique, historique des sciences ecclésiastiques, 1760-1762). Cette décision l’affecta comme on peut en juger en lisant l’avertissement de l’Histoire du Calvinisme (1682): « Voicy le dixième Tome de mes Histoires, qui, comme je l’ose esperer, satisfera mon Lecteur, mesme à Rome, quoy qu’il paroisse assez qu’on n’y est pas trop satisfait de l’Auteur. Car il n’y a presque personne aujourd’huy qui ne sçache que j’ay eû le malheur de tomber dans la disgrace de N. S. Père le Pape, qui a fait mettre dans l’Indice, quelques-unes de mes Histoires, & m’a mis moy-mesme hors de la Compagnie des Jesuites […]. Ce coup m’a esté d’autant plus sensible, qu’il vient d’un Pape dont l’éminente vertu reconnuë & réverée de tout le monde, peut faire croire, particulierement à ceux dont je n’ay pas l’honneur d’estre bien connu, que je suis fort coupable. » Bien qu’assuré d’avoir « toûjours écrit & parlé conformément à la doctrine de l’Eglise, aux maximes & aux lois inviolables du Royaume, & porté hautement l’autorité du Saint-Siege & du Pape aussi loin qu’elle peut s’étendre selon l’Evangile, les Conciles, & les Saints Peres » et « tasché de vivre selon [sa] profession d’une manière qui fait [qu’il a] encore aujourd’huy le bonheur d’estre tenu & dedans & dehors la Société pour un homme irreprochable dans sa conduite & dans ses mœurs », Louis Maimbourg se retira à l’abbaye Saint-Victor de Paris où il mourut le 13 août 1686. *L’orthographe et la ponctuation originales ont été conservées. Catherine de Médicis vue par Louis Maimbourg La Reine Catherine de Medicis, qui estoit sans contredit l’une des plus fines & des plus habiles Princesses qui fut jamais, ayant fortement résolu à ce coup d’estre la maistresse, & de se mettre en possession du gouvernement de l’Etat, prit pour venir à ses fins une voye que les Politiques ont extrémement loüée, comme un trait d’une tres- grande adresse. D’une part elle ne voulut pas laisser anéantir, comme elle le pouvoit, le parti des Huguenots soustenu de celuy des deux premiers Princes du Sang, de peur que les Guises, qui avoient pour eux presque tous les Catholiques, n’ayant plus d’ennemis, ne fussent en estat de retenir encore, malgré qu’elle en eust, ce pouvoir absolu qu’ils avoient eû sous le Regne de François II. De l’autre, elle ne vouloit pas aussi que les Guises fussent détruits, de peur que le party des Princes n’ayant plus personne qui pust s’opposer à ce qu’il voudroit entreprendre, le Roy de Navarre qui prétendoit à la Régence, ne l’emportast sur elle. Sur quoy elle résolut de balancer les deux partis, & de les tenir continuellement en jalousie, en Catherine de Médicis François Clouet – Musée Carnavalet panchant, ou faisant semblant de pancher, tantost vers l’un, tantost vers l’autre, selon qu’ils seroient plus forts ou plus foibles, afin que s’estant ainsi renduë necessaire à tous les deux, elle pust se servir de l’un pour s’opposer à l’autre, & pour l’abbaisser quand il voudroit un peu trop s’élever. Mais pour Pierre Bayle, si Louis les plus tumultueuses & les plus farouches Maimbourg, dont « la plume est ont inspiré de fureur & de rage aux plus hypothéquée au Roi par une grosse scelerats des siécles passez, le Calvinisme pension », a entrepris l’Histoire du […] l’a renouvellé de la mémoire de nos Calvinisme, c’est « uniquement afin de Ayeux & de nos Peres en ce Royaume, nous charger de la haine & de l’exécration pour s’y établir par le fer & par le feu, s’il publique, & de justifier, & fomenter le eust pû, sur les ruines de la Religion & de dessein qu’on a inspiré au Roi de nous l’Etat. » Si les « emportemens » de Louis perdre ». Au début de sa Critique générale de l’Histoire du Calvinisme de Mr. Maimbourg* (1682), derrière laquelle « se donne à lire l’ébauche d’une vaste réflexion sur l’écriture de l’histoire en général et sur la répression des convictions religieuses » (Hubert Bost, Pierre Bayle, Fayard, 2006), Pierre Bayle s’interroge sur les raisons qui ont conduit Louis Maimbourg à écrire « avec des emportemens si outrez ». Personne n’ignorait « son tempérament plein de feu », et les années qu’il avait passées chez les Jésuites lui donnaient comme « une grande avance, pour avoir une merveilleuse facilité d’écrire d’un air fougueux ». Comme, en outre, il a été « employé à prêcher contre Messieurs de Pierre Bayle Louis Ferdinand Elle le Jeune – Château de Versailles Port-Royal » et qu’il a « très-mal réussi dans ce combat », Pierre Bayle en conclut qu’« il est très-naturel de croire qu’il lui en *Œuvres de Mr. Pierre Bayle, professeur en philosophie, et en histoire, à Rotterdam, tome second, La Haye, 1727. HICKSON* introduction theodicy and toleration seem at first glance to be an unlikely pair of topics to treat in a single paper. Toleration usually means putting up with beliefs or ac- tions with which one disagrees, and it is practiced because the beliefs or actions in question are not disagreeable enough to justify interference. It is usually taken to be a topic for moral and political philosophy. Theodicy, on the other hand, is the attempt to solve the problem of evil; that is, to explain the origin of suffering and sin in a way that does not make God a moral cause of those evils.1 While theodicy concerns the notions of good and evil, and could therefore be considered a moral topic, historical and contemporary discussions of it have been predominantly meta- physical and epistemological in scope. Toleration and theodicy would therefore seem to belong to entirely different spheres of philosophical inquiry. When the paper in question is about Pierre Bayle, however, as this one is, treating these two topics together should seem more plausible, since the first half of Bayle’s career was spent arguing for toleration, while much of the latter half was devoted to defending his controversial thesis that there could be no purely rational solution to the problem of evil.

The Development of Crusading Historiography The crusades were from their inception seen from many different points of view, and every account and reference in the sources must be interpreted in the light of where, when, by whom, and in whose interests it was written.1 Each participant made his— and in few cases her—own crusade, and the leaders had their own interests, motives, and objectives, which often put them at odds with one another. They were all distrusted by the Byzantine emperor Alexios Komnenos, whose point of view is presented in the Alexiad written in the middle of the twelfth century by his daughter Anna Komnene. The Turkish sultan Kilij Arslan naturally saw things from another perspective, as did the indigenous Christian populations in the east, especially the Armenians, and the peoples of the Muslim principalities of the eastern Mediterranean. The rulers of Edessa, Antioch, Aleppo, and Damascus, and beyond them Cairo and Baghdad, each had their own atti- tudes toward the crusades, which are reflected in the sources. To these must be added the peoples through whose lands the crusaders passed on their way to the east, and in particular the Jews who suffered at the hands of the followers of Peter the Hermit.2 The historiography of the crusades thus begins with the earliest accounts of their origins and history.

Parker Allan Cotton Master of Theology Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto 2017 Abstract This thesis examines Bayle’s use of Scripture within the Dictionnaire and attempts to bridge the gap between questions of Bayle’s beliefs and attitudes towards religion and his well- acknowledged interest in religious toleration. Through a survey of the Dictionnaire it demonstrates that Bayle not only referenced Scripture often, and in seemingly pious ways, he does so in articles discussing moral failings of biblical heroes while maintaining that he is not attempting to undermine Christian faith. Two main insights emerge. First, the situating of toleration discussions within biblical/religious contexts in the Dictionnaire connects the two and sees Bayle questioning whether those who believe they are justified in persecuting can really have this confidence. In absence of this assurance, toleration is a preferred path. Second, by demonstrating an alternative possibility to Bayle’s scandalous takes on Old Testament figures and discussions of God, this thesis suggests that an atheistic reading of Bayle is improbable.

It argues that the issue of counsel was important in the polemics against Jesuit moral theology. Theological challenges to Probabilism clearly show that many intellectuals were worried it could lead political counsellors astray and encourage them to defer to the whims of political authorities. This was not mere- ly a theoretical issue. Three French cases evidence the fact that political counsellors could claim an obligation to put obedience to their sovereign before obedience to religious authority—the pope in particular—on religious grounds. The discussion between anti-probabilists and probabilists during the second half of the seventeenth century shows the degree of unrest among theological and ecclesiastical authorities confronted with the demands of the state on individual conscience, and on the con- science of counsellors in particular.     PIERRE BAYLE AND HUMAN RIGHTS: LA LIBERTÉ DE LA CONSCIENCE THE GENESIS OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN WESTERN DEMOCRACY Robert Fulton Northern Illinois University It is a monster who during peace makes the evils of war, and whose pride knows no laws.1 In 1685, Louis XIV sent shock waves throughout Europe by revoking the longstanding Edict of Nantes, thereby signaling that he was ready to re-embrace Catholicism as the official religion of the kingdom. In doing so he created one of the largest diasporas of early modern times.2 More than 200,000 of the approximately one million Protestants fled France, using any means available, and some of the Huguenot émigrés formed a small but vocal group of exiles. Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) and Pierre Jurieu (1637-1713) were two Huguenots refugees who left France for the Netherlands even before the Revocation. However, the two of them could not have been more distinct in terms of their political beliefs. While both Bayle and Jurieu defended against ideological assaults by French Catholic intellectuals, Jurieu was just as vehement in his theoretical disputes with fellow Protestants. Bayle, despite his broader (and Enlightenment) reputation as a skeptic, was meanwhile advocating tolerance with respect to all religious beliefs. Hist., D. Theo. Acting Director: Nelson H. Minnich, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the twenty-seven English editions of famed Gallican church historian Louis Ellies Du Pin. While Du Pin‘s life and works have been extensively researched by Grès-Gayer, his English translations, and reactions to them, have never been fully studied. The research takes an in-depth look at his Protestant editors‘ comments, as well as those of other prominent scholars who cite Du Pin‘s works in their own. Their varied depictions of Du Pin include: Protestant sympathizer, pre- enlightenment scholar, and a staunch Catholic. The dissertation includes English Catholic reactions to Du Pin as a traitor to the Catholic cause and a closet Jansenist. Was the ―English Du Pin‖ the Real Du Pin?     THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE USE AND THE ORIGINS OF THE MODERN TRUST: MAITLAND’S THESIS, THE CRUSADES, AND BEYOND LINDSAY DEAN BREACH A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Department of History University of Canterbury 2018 Abstract This thesis advances a new theory to explain the origin of the use in English law. It defines a use, in the absence of consensus about definition, as occurring when a person (the feoffor) makes an enforceable grant of land (called a feoffment) to another (the feoffee) to hold for the benefit of a third party. The thesis is a reassessment of an accepted truth that crusaders were the first to make uses. Frederic Maitland, the father of legal history, lent his authority to this idea when he suggested that English crusaders employed uses in case of their demise abroad. Subsequent legal historians have put forward other explanations but none have supplanted Maitland’s authoritative account. Therefore, it is necessary to return to and re-examine the development of the use. This thesis shows how the legal concept of crusading that developed in the twelfth century attracted both papal and secular legal privileges, which effectively fulfilled the function Maitland had ascribed to uses. Neither the canon law nor English common law created the use in response to the crusading ideology. The current author instead used the crusade lens to move beyond Maitland’s thesis to show the first germs of the use are found in the thirteenth-century practices of the Exchequer of the Jews.
