CAMPAIGNERS in West Yorkshire are extremely concerned about lack of progress by the Government and Network Rail on infrastructure proposals that should deliver improvements for travellers in the next few years, including the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU). Three rail user groups and the Yorkshire Branch of Railfuture have written to Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of Network Rail, who was recently been quoted as casting doubt on TRU. In a magazine interview (RAIL 897, 29 Jan’2020) Haines had said the scope of TRU could depend on the high-speed rail proposal “Northern Powerhouse Rail” (NPR). The campaigners say NPR is decades away and will not benefit stations on regional routes that desperately need investment now. Wimbledon, 1951-53 (and a few other railway memories) JDB, August 2013, minor additions and corrections May/August 2015 Neither this nor its companion piece “Derby Day, 1949” lays claim to any particular literary or other merit; they are merely pieces of first-hand reportage which may perhaps be of interest to future transport historians. In September 1951, I started going to school in Wimbledon. This involved a train journey morning and evening, an experience which put me off commuting for life but which also led to an interest in railways that still survives. In particular, one of the ways of walking from the station to school followed a footpath alongside the railway for the first half mile or so. Wimbledon is seven miles out of Waterloo, on what was originally the main line of the London and Southampton Railway. In due course, this became the London and South Western, then it was grouped into the Southern Railway, and by 1951 it had become part of British Railways. The lines from Waterloo divide at Clapham Junction, a line towards Windsor and Reading branching off to the north, and there are several connections between the two. One is at Putney, where a steep climb leads up to East Putney station on the Wimbledon branch of the London Underground District Line, and a Waterloo to Wimbledon suburban service via East Putney used this until 1941. Wimbledon station had been completely rebuilt in 1929, and in 1951 it comprised ten platforms. Four were terminal platforms for the District Line, this side of the station being essentially self-contained though there was a connection from the East Putney line to the main line just outside. -

Railways at Lewes, by Robert Cheesman Introduction This article came about as a result of a request from a member of Friends of Lewes after one of our talks in January, 2017. Two managers from the BAM-Nuttall team who had completed a year-long renovation of the station’s listed buildings came to describe the challenges they had faced and this was preceded by a short history of railways in the town by Robert Cheesman, Chairman of the Friends of Lewes. Afterwards it was suggested that it would be interesting to have a more detailed account. A.H. Homewood postcard of Lewes Station c. 1905, John Hollands collection * 1 Description of the lines Image © Railway Magazine * After some speculative schemes had been put forward, the first railway from Brighton opened on 8 June 1846, having bisected the Priory Remains to reach Lewes. The station was in Friars Walk and had an ornate Italianate frontage on to the street. This station survived until it was demolished without permission over the Easter weekend in 1969. Friars Walk frontage of the original Lewes station * 2 On 27 June 1846 services were extended to St Leonards (Bulverhythe), but this meant that services from Brighton to St Leonards had to reverse out of Lewes station as it was a terminus. The following year (1847) the London line from Keymer Junction, which tunnelled for some 370 yards under the castle precinct, and the branch line to Newhaven opened. Many of these trains used the station in Friars Walk, although to make operating easier platforms were provided at Pinwell (from 1847) so that some through trains could stop in Lewes without having to reverse out of the station. -

Courtesy of the Buriton Heritage Bank 1860s painting by Charles Cotton of Rowland’s Castle station which shows the original single track. 2 A Brief History of the Direct Line between Waterloo and Portsmouth The first railway boom occurred in the middle 1830s when the great trunk routes of the railways were constructed, amongst them the London and Southampton Railway, authorised in 1834 and opened throughout in 1840, and the London and Brighton Railway, authorised in 1837 and opened to Brighton in 1841 and from Brighton to Portsmouth in 1847. There was at that time no scheme for a direct line to Portsmouth for three main reasons: (a) not being a commercial port it had not the financial backing of the manufacturers in the Midlands as was the case with the London and Southampton Railway, (b) it had not the health resort attractions enjoyed by Brighton, and (c) the War Department and the Admiralty would not countenance a railway approaching the fortifications around the Dockyard.
