Finally we are here on the Beagle Channel aboard our sparkling new ice-strengthened vessel. The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. Emperors are near the top of the Southern Ocean’s food chain and primarily consume Antarctic silverfish, Antarctic krill, and squid. They are excellent swimmers and can dive to great depths. The average life span of emperor penguin in the wild is 15 to 20 years. Emperor penguins currently breed at 61 colonies located around Antarctica, with the largest colonies in the Ross Sea and Weddell Sea. The total population size is estimated at approximately 270,000–280,000 breeding pairs or 625,000–650,000 total birds. Emperor penguin depends upon stable fast ice throughout their 8–9 month breeding season to complete the rearing of its single chick. They are the only warm-blooded Antarctic species that breeds during the austral winter and therefore uniquely adapted to its environment. Breeding colonies mainly occur on fast ice, close to the coast or closely offshore, and amongst closely packed grounded icebergs that prevent ice breaking out during the breeding season and provide shelter from the wind. Sea ice extent in the Southern Ocean has undergone considerable inter-annual variability over the last 40 years, although with much greater inter-annual variability in the five sectors than for the Southern Ocean as a whole. -

The outcrops were amongst the last to be discovered in the region, with many occurrences not visited until the 1970’s and 1980’s. The volcanism consists of several monogenetic volcanic fields and small isolated centres. It is sodic alkaline to tholeiitic in composition and ranges in age between 7.7 Ma and present. No eruptions have been observed (with the possible, but dubious, exception of Seal Nunataks in 1893), but very young isotopic ages for some outcrops suggest that future eruptions are a possibility. The eruptions were overwhelmingly glaciovolcanic and the outcrops have been a major source of information on glaciovolcano construction. They have also been highly instrumental in advancing our understanding of the configuration of the Plio-Pleistocene Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet. However, our knowledge is hindered by a paucity of modern, precise isotopic ages. In particular, there is no obvious relationship between the age of ridge crest—trench collisions and the timing of slab-window volcanism, a puzzle that may only be resolved by new dating. -

A survey of breeding birds during the brooding stage was carried out from February to April 2000 in the southern portion of Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. This island supports two Sites of Special Scien- tific Interest (SSSI Nos. 21 and 27). Nine species were found breeding in the study area: Chinstrap Penguin Pygoscelis antarctica (an estimated 6820 breeding pairs at two colonies surveyed), Pintado or Cape Petrel Daption capense (36), Wilson’s Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (3), Antarctic Cormorant Phalacrocorax atriceps bransfieldensis (9), Greater Sheathbill Chionis alba (2), Subantarctic Skua Catharacta antarctica (4), South Polar Skua C. maccormicki (11), Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus (49) and Antarctic Tern Sterna vittata (5). Due to the increasing tourist activity at Deception Island, better information on the location and size of breeding populations is a particular requirement if effective precautionary conservation actions are to be taken. Here, in this world of perpetual snow and ice below the 60th parallel, some of the world’s most enchanting creatures survive to bring colour and sound to an otherwise harsh and silent environment. Beaches resound to the raucous bellows of elephant, fur and leopard seals, Humpback and Minke whales glide effortlessly through the still, near-frozen waters, and colonies of Adelie, Chinstrap, Gentoo and King Penguin congregate in huge numbers on the vast snow plains. The RCGS Resolute is the ideal vessel for such an expedition with her unsurpassed ice classification, her excellent manoeuvrability and large indoor and outdoor viewing platforms. She is also extremely comfortable with all cabins with en suite facilities and excellent public areas. She has 146 berths, but we will be limiting numbers to around 90 to ensure even more personal service and space. Lastly, we have been fortunate enough to negotiate an excellent rate so the expedition offers excellent value, especially the Single Supplement. Zodiacs are used for the daily on-shore excursions and for the more adventurous the Kayak is also available (limited numbers) and maybe even a chance to spend a night on the ice-shelf. -
