Some are small, like shifting our table of contents headings to more clearly identify which works are peer reviewed, and changing the spacing between articles’ paragraphs. Others are more obvious, like the ability and willingness to publish even longer works than previously, in addition to the ongoing array of works published. Some transitions are in process and less visible. For example, we are working to evolve IR’s structure to reflect its degree of engagement from others, and making behind the scene shifts in our ability to better understand and realize the goals we set out to accomplish.

    Evolutionary Religion! The Rev. Dr. J. Carl Gregg 9 February 2014 Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, Maryland frederickuu.org! A tradition has arisen in many progressive congregations of having a worship service near Charles Darwin’s birthday (February 12) with an annual focus on the ways that evolution impacts, influences, and informs the practice of religion in the twenty-first century. A related tradition around Darwin’s birthday is an annual surge in “Religion versus Science” stories across all forms of media. For the most part, these “Religion versus Science” debates produce more heat than light. The most prominent example I’ve seen this year is the debate this past Tuesday at the Creation Museum in Kentucky between Ken Ham, a Biblical literalist and young-Earth Creationist, versus Bill Nye “the Science Guy.” At this point I have seen so many similar debates that I could not muster any interest in this one. But don’t get me wrong, the challenge of integrating scientific evolution with traditional religion is a tremendously important intellectual challenge, but it was the great challenge of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century. Here in the early twenty-first century, we find ourselves living more than 150 years after the publication in 1859 of Darwin’s landmark book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. In the words of one snarky blog post, “According to a [2012] Gallup poll, 46% of Americans believe in Creationism, 32% of Americans believe in God-guided evolution, and 15% of Americans are actually right:” (I warned you this particular blogger was sarcastic.) Briefly on that middle category of “God-guided evolution,” it all depends on what you mean by the word “God,” and I’ve preached previously on the subject of “Do We Need a Moratorium on the Word ‘God,’” but I need to set those concerns aside for today.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding.

    Michael: The Future is Calling Us to Greatness is the main program that I have been delivering throughout 2014, along the route of the Great March for Climate Action. It’s the main evening program that I’ve been delivering. Great March for Climate Action began in Los Angeles on March 1 and ended on November 1 in Washington, DC. Connie and I spoke at about a hundred churches and colleges along that route, mostly churches. It was about fifty people, full-time, that did the whole three-thousand mile stretch. Other joined in major cities. These people were suffering in some of this. I ended up speaking in several of the rallies along the route. This was the major thing that Connie and I both did throughout 2014. It was a great honor to march with this sign, Climate Change is the Moral Issue with Ed Fallon who is right there, walking with the walking stick next to me, and the woman on the left of me in this picture, the one in the purple was Mayor Miriam. She walked every mile and she was seventy- one years old. That’s what gave structure to this. The Future is Calling Us to Greatness: Right Relationship to Reality in the 21st Century and Beyond. The other title that I sometimes used or supplemented it with was the Reality is Lord: A Scientific View of God and Why This Matters on a Rapidly Warming Planet. I will use the words god and reality interchangeably. I’ll make the case why it’s not only legitimate to do that, but why it’s important for religious people to do that.

    Press release – August 27th 2012 Solar System genealogy revealed by meteorites The stellar environment of our Solar System at its birth is poorly known, as it has accomplished some twenty revolutions around the Galactic centre since its formation 4.5 billion years ago. Matthieu Gounelle from the Laboratoire de Minéralogie et Cosmochimie du Muséum (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle/CNRS) and Georges Meynet from the Observatoire de Genève established the Solar System genealogy in elucidating the origin of a radioactive element, 26Al, which was present in the nascent Solar System. Their results are published this week in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. Aluminium-26, a radioactive isotope of aluminium with a mean life of one million years was present in some meteoritic inclusions during the very first stages of the Solar System, 4.5 billion years ago. Its presence in the nascent Solar System had long been attributed to a supernova1 which would have exploded nearby the forming Solar System. However, the rarity of the association of a supernova and a forming star would imply that very special conditions lead to the Solar System formation. From astronomical observations of young stars and astrophysical modelling, the two authors showed that the 26Al originated instead from the wind of a massive star born a few million years before the Solar System. This star, not only synthesized the 26Al found in meteoritic inclusions but also lead to the formation of the Solar System in accumulating gigantic quantities of hydrogen gas, from which a new star generation (including our Sun) formed. This massive star can therefore be considered as the parent star of our Solar System.

Her concerns seemed less arcane, her presentation more appealingly worked out; as Guy Scarpetta put it in he Nouvel Observateur (May 19, 1980), she now intro- duced into "theoretical rigor an effective measure of seduction." Actually, no sudden change has taken place: the features that are noticeable in Powers of Horror were already in evidence in several earlier essays, some of which have been translated in Desire in Language (Columbia University Press, 1980).
