Some are small, like shifting our table of contents headings to more clearly identify which works are peer reviewed, and changing the spacing between articles’ paragraphs. Others are more obvious, like the ability and willingness to publish even longer works than previously, in addition to the ongoing array of works published. Some transitions are in process and less visible. For example, we are working to evolve IR’s structure to reflect its degree of engagement from others, and making behind the scene shifts in our ability to better understand and realize the goals we set out to accomplish. -

Cover design by Jeff Belizaire About this book This is one part of the first comprehensive study of the development of Greek sculpture and painting with the aim of enriching the usual stylistic-sociological approaches through a serious, disciplined consideration of the basic Greek scientific orientation to the world. This world view, known as the Four Elements Theory, came to specific formulation at the same time as the perfected contrapposto of Polykleitos and a concern with the four root colors in painting (Polygnotos). All these factors are found to be intimately intertwined, for, at this stage of human culture, the spheres of science and art were not so drastically differentiated as in our era. The world of the four elements involved the concepts of polarity and complementarism at every level. -
Following the Trail of the Snake: a Life History of Cobra Mansa “Cobrinha” Mestre of Capoeira
ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding. -

Beyond Rodin: Revisiting the Legacy of Camille Claudel Abstract French sculptress Camille Claudel has gained recognition in the past 30 years due to a focus on her tragic life rather than her artistic talent. Despite critical acclaim and respect amongst her peers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, her affair with Auguste Rodin and her struggles with mental illness have cast a dark, dramatic shadow over modern interpretations of Claudel’s oeuvre. Considering how difficult it was for a woman to be working as an artist at this time, Claudel’s sculptures should not be outweighed by her personal life. -

I only revealed my secret to my husband and children about twenty years ago and that was when my adopted daughter found me. It was in March last year 2020 whilst in lockdown and out walking, on my own that I thought of the burden I was carrying and burst into tears and my goodness did those tears fall like rivers and rivers of grief merging into a sea of blackness. When I returned home my husband was horrified to see me in such a state and asked "what happened did someone attack you" and I replied "only those monsters who crucified me in 63" - his reply "Is that all". Those three little words enraged me and restored the gift of Clarity of Vision which sometimes can be hard to attain in any state. -

Hanshe 1 Hyperion—Ecce Homo: The Tragic Passion of Auguste Rodin Note: The following essay does not engage in formal aesthetic analysis of specifi c works of art by Rodin; its dynamic or propulsive force is different. It commences with a theoretical prelude on passion and then embarks on a meditative analysis of Rodin’s work born of an experiential encounter with it. It refl ects upon the work as a revelation and expression of being and explores the multitudinous ways in which one can live with Rodin’s art as an active force. Art shows mans his raison d’etre. It reveals to him the meaning of life, it enlightens him upon his destiny, and consequently points him on his way. The great artist, and by this I mean the poet as well as the “ painter and the sculptor, fi nds even in suffering, in the death of loved ones, in the treachery of friends, something which fi lls him with a voluptuous though tragic admiration. When he sees beings everywhere destroying each other; when he sees all youth fading, all strength failing, all genius dying, when he is face to face with the will which decreed these tragic laws, more than ever he rejoices in his knowledge, and, seized anew by the passion for truth, he is happy. -

From Roman to Romanesque : Some possible sources of various elements of Romanesque Iconography. Introduction The Romanesque Renaissance flourished simultaneously all over Christendom, wherever the Roman Empire had left monuments extant or capable of being unearthed. Elements of classical iconography as well as of architecture and decorative details were re-used, hence the term “Romanesque”. In some cases there may have been a deliberate intention to supplant earlier religions by subsuming them within Christian images. The scope of this paper is not to explore the significance of the images except where there is an obvious divergence in their meanings over the centuries, but rather to indicate earlier use of some Romanesque images in Pagan times. I have not touched on decoration without human or animal content as this has already been covered by the late René Crozet in “Survivances Antiques dans le décor Roman”. Summary Paleo-Christian representations using Pagan iconography The cult of Sabazios as a possible source for some elements found in Romanesque art including the “femme au serpent” image Sabazios becomes identified with Mithras, the importance of bulls and rams in sculpture, associated worship of Cybele, taurobolic altars Mithraic religion associated with the signs of the Zodiac, Zodiac images used in Romanesque sculpture Mythological creatures such as centaurs and mermaids, hybrid monsters and grotesque people, blowers of horns and trumpets, hunting scenes Foliate masks, masks spewing vegetation, heads surrounded by foliage Paleo-Christian representations using Pagan iconography A typical example is this mosaic of Jesus as Sol or Helios, the Sun God, from the tomb of the Julii family in the Vatican grottos, under St Peter’s, Rome : Fig 1 : Jesus as Sun God, Rome Note the liberal use of vine leaves : Jesus is also the True Vine, and Christians may have wished to establish His supremacy over the cult of Dionysos as well as of Apollo.
