Houghtaling, 2013 Abstract As much of the scholarly literature shows, gender has served as a central organizing force for knowing and theorizing about sexuality. The governmentality of sexuality in Western societies over the last 200 years has led to sex being discursively implicated with reproduction, and this has had a profound effect on the ways sexuality has been theorized and understood in terms of gendered desire. The aim of this dissertation is to theorize an alternative approach to sexuality that decenters gender and gives attention to the materiality of sex and the body. Using existentialism and phenomenology, this dissertation offers a particular challenge to heteronormative conceptions of “sexual orientation” and “sexual identity” for their ostensibly timeless and enduring quality, or being. The research presented herein theorizes sexuality through an ontology of becoming that takes into account the diverse, multi-faceted nature of sexuality as a series of temporal experiences, attractions, desires, sensations, practices, and identities – that is, as a phenomenon. A genealogical methodology is used to trace the discursive history of sexuality and demonstrate how modernist discourses of sexuality have influenced how sexuality is known and experienced. This research emphasizes the discursive constraints on knowledge about sexuality. In considering an alternative framework, the principles of existentialism and phenomenology are critically examined through the works of Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. -

FOREWORD EDGAR MORIN’S PATH OF COMPLEXITY ALFONSO MONTUORI Ndlr: A Montuori et l’éditeur de ‘On Complexity’ nous autorisent à reprender ici le texte anglais de la préface de l’ouvrage d’Edgar Morin qu’ils publient « ON COMPLEXITY » The reform in thinking is a key anthropological and historical problem. This implies a mental revolution of considerably greater proportions than the Copernican revolution. Never before in the history of humanity have the responsibilities of thinking weighed so crushingly on us. Does knowing that knowledge cannot be guaranteed by a foundation not mean that we have already acquired a first fundamental knowledge? And should this not lead us to abandon the architectural metaphor, in which the term “foundation” assumes an indispensable meaning, in favor of a musical metaphor of construction in movement that transforms in its very movement the constitutive elements that form it? And might we not also consider the knowledge of knowledge as a construction in movement? We need a kind of thinking that reconnects that which is disjointed and compartmentalized, that respects diversity as it recognizes unity, and that tries to discern interdependencies. We need a radical thinking (which gets to the root of problems), a multidimensional thinking, and an organizational or systemic thinking. History has not reached a stagnant end, nor is it triumphantly marching towards the radiant future. It is being catapulted into an unknown adventure. Edgar Morin: A Biblio-biography Perhaps the best way to provide a contextual introduction to Morin’s work is through an outline of his intellectual trajectory, in the form of a “biblio-biography.” A review of Morin’s journey helps us, I believe, to better understand the man and his mission in the essays that follow. -

College, Assam, India ABSTRACT: The best part of Jean Paul Sartre (1905-1980), the most prominent figure of existentialist movement was his advocacy of humanism. As an atheist and a humanist, his primary concern was man. He gave much importance on human freedom. In his word man is born free. Sartre equalised human existence and freedom. Whatever happened in the world had its significance because of man. For Sartre, it is man who builds up the world by his actions. So, man’s action needs to be considered with reason, justification and an understanding that one’s decision will have an impact on the rest of the society. The basic concept created by existentialist movement was ‘existence prior to essence’. Sartre believes that a man first of all exists and it is through all of his actions that he is able to define who he is and before actions are executed, man is nothing more than a thought. Sartre’s humanism is the philosophy of eternal concerns of man which are today more pressing than ever before. Since Sartre’s existentialism is concerned with man’s freedom and its aim is to change its readers or to free from illusion, therefore it always been taught as a practical philosophy. Thus, present paper is an attempt to analyse Sartre’s humanism and its distinctive features. -

I first encountered Paul when I registered for his “Place, Politics and Culture” graduate seminar during my second semester in the interdisciplinary Latin American Studies master’s program. Up until that point, I had felt placeless at UT, floating between history, government and sociology courses that left me feeling uninspired and intellectually homeless. However, as soon as I set foot in Paul’s seminar, I knew I had found my proverbial academic home in geography. His genuine enthusiasm and creativity as a teacher made the study of place, space and landscape seem limitless, inviting and full of possibility. Through his eyes, mundane practices like walking through a city or looking at advertising in the suburbs became transformed into infinitely fascinating reflections on culture and society. I can say without a doubt that I would have never become a geographer were it not for Paul’s creative inspiration. -
Following the Trail of the Snake: a Life History of Cobra Mansa “Cobrinha” Mestre of Capoeira
ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding. -

Resaying the Human: Levinas Beyond Humanism and Antihumanism, 2010
Resaying the Human Resaying the Human In this reading of the French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas a notion of the human is developed through an engagement with his philosophy. The argument is that, with the help of Levinas, it is possible for the idea of the human to be understood anew, for the notion to be ‘resaid’. This resaying of the human is performed in a self-critical way: Levinas’s work is shown not to be a new variation of the complacent ideology of humanism; the idea of the human is instead interpreted to be the bearer of the very movement of critique. Here Levinas is offered as a modern thinker of particular relevance for contemporary discussions surrounding the nature both of the political and of Human Rights. In addition one finds a systematic analysis of the major works of Levinas, unraveling how a notion of the human develops from within his philosophy. Levinas’s thought is placed alongside the philosophical figures of his time, such as Heidegger, Sartre, Bataille, Lévi-Strauss, Althusser, Foucault and Derrida, as well as with more recent political thinkers, for example, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Agamben and Jacques Rancière. He waited until the day of departure to inform his mother and sisters of his flight from Harlem, and then boarded the plane amid their tears and protests with a one-way ticket.1 The young writer left not because of what he hoped to find in Paris, but what he had to escape in America. In his own words, “I left America because I doubted my ability to survive the fury of the color problem there.”2 In a later interview, Baldwin put it more bluntly: “I didn’t know what was going to happen to me in France but I knew what was going to happen to me in New York. -
