(Rick) Kimball has been writing and editing faith-based and secular curricula since 1973. He has also worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, the editor-in-chief of an educational publishing house and a freelance writer and photographer. Rick’s Unitarian Universalist credits include Our Whole Lives: Sexuality Education for Adults (Boston: Unitarian Universalist Association, 2000), the Tapestry of Faith sixth grade program Amazing Grace: Exploring Right and Wrong, and the words to the hymn "Winds Be Still" in Singing the Living Tradition. German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject.

    Evolutionary Religion! The Rev. Dr. J. Carl Gregg 9 February 2014 Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick, Maryland frederickuu.org! A tradition has arisen in many progressive congregations of having a worship service near Charles Darwin’s birthday (February 12) with an annual focus on the ways that evolution impacts, influences, and informs the practice of religion in the twenty-first century. A related tradition around Darwin’s birthday is an annual surge in “Religion versus Science” stories across all forms of media. For the most part, these “Religion versus Science” debates produce more heat than light. The most prominent example I’ve seen this year is the debate this past Tuesday at the Creation Museum in Kentucky between Ken Ham, a Biblical literalist and young-Earth Creationist, versus Bill Nye “the Science Guy.” At this point I have seen so many similar debates that I could not muster any interest in this one. But don’t get me wrong, the challenge of integrating scientific evolution with traditional religion is a tremendously important intellectual challenge, but it was the great challenge of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century. Here in the early twenty-first century, we find ourselves living more than 150 years after the publication in 1859 of Darwin’s landmark book On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. In the words of one snarky blog post, “According to a [2012] Gallup poll, 46% of Americans believe in Creationism, 32% of Americans believe in God-guided evolution, and 15% of Americans are actually right:” (I warned you this particular blogger was sarcastic.) Briefly on that middle category of “God-guided evolution,” it all depends on what you mean by the word “God,” and I’ve preached previously on the subject of “Do We Need a Moratorium on the Word ‘God,’” but I need to set those concerns aside for today.

Over tribal pride?” The phone conversation wasn’t going as Hamoud hoped it would. He hadn’t spoken to his brother Idriss in over a month, and only a few times this year. At 21, Idriss was nearly five years older than Hamoud, but much had happened in the past three years that made the age gap a chasm. Idriss fought in the partisan militia along with their tribe, and along with their father, to push Qadhaffi’s soldiers out of Ajdabiyah when the revolution swept across northeastern Libya in 2011.
