Lektorálta: Kara György Elõszó A kézikönyv célja, hogy bemutassa a Tibet múltjával és jelené- vel kapcsolatos legfontosabb ma használatos tényanyagot és bibliográfiai adatokat. Segédanyagnak készült az amerikai felsõ- oktatás részére. Azok, akik – maguk nem szakemberként – megpróbáltak tibeti adatokat felhasználni belsõ-, kelet- és dél-ázsiai kurzu- saikban, tisztában vannak azokkal a nehézségekkel, amelyeket a megbízható és hozzáférhetõ információk hiánya okozott. Az igazat megvallva azonban el kell ismernünk, hogy Tibetrõl és lakóiról szép számmal akadnak általános, s néha felületes munkák. Tudományos cikkekben sincs hiány; sokukat idegen nyelven írták és olyan szakmai folyóiratokban jelentek meg, amelyek csak azok számára hozzáférhetõk, akik elég szerencsések ahhoz, hogy egy nagyobb és a témára szakosodott könyvtár közelében dolgozhatnak. Így ezek az írásbeli anyagok csak a szakemberek számára elérhetõk, és pont ez az egyik ok, amiért úgy gondoltuk, hogy egy olyan általános segédkönyv, mint a A tibeti mûveltség kézikönyve sok olyan tanár számára hasznos lenne, akik a témá- hoz máskülönben nem túl szorosan kapcsolódó kurzusokat tar- tanak. Az itt bemutatásra kerülõ anyagot az Amerikai Egyesült Államok Egészségügyi, Oktatási és Jóléti Hivatalának Oktatási Osztályával kötött szerzõdés értelmében hoztuk létre. Az eredeti terv szerint kutatómunkánkat már vagy két évvel ezelõtt be kel- lett volna fejeznünk, azonban a Kézikönyv elkészítése során számtalan szerencsétlenség ért bennünket. A programigazgató két alkalommal szívrohamot kapott, a könyv elsõszámú alkotója pedig csúnya baleset áldozata lett, ami több hónapra mozgáskép- telenné tette. Voltak azonban egészen más jellegû nehézségek, melyeket magának a munkának a jellege okozott. Csak írásakor jöttünk rá, hogy a Kézikönyv akkor tehetne igazán jó szolgálatot, ha jóval bõvebb lenne, mint ahogy azt ere- detileg elképzeltük. Terjedelme kétszerese annak, mint amit kezdetben terveztünk. A kutatási programban részt vett gárda azonban még így is kénytelen tudomásul venni a végeredmény hiányosságait. A programigazgató véleménye szerint az egyik legkínosabb ezek közül a tulajdonnevek írásának következetlen- ségei. Ennek azonban meg van az az elõnye, hogy így a laikus olvasó is bepillantást nyerhet azokba az ellentmondásokba, melyekkel akkor találkozna, ha további mûveket olvasna el a témában. A könyv elkészítése során legalább rájöttünk arra, 6 hogy valójában milyennek is kellene lenni ennek Kézikönyvnek. Ahhoz, hogy közelebb kerüljünk az áhított célhoz, legalább még egy évre lett volna szükségünk, és ezt a résztvevõk közül senki sem engedhette meg magának. Õszintén hisszük, hogy a Kézi- könyv még jelenlegi formájában is hasznos lesz azoknak, akiknek íródott. Reméljük, hogy sikere majd igazolja a második kiadást, amelyben nemcsak a könyv kiegészítése érdekében tett saját javaslatainkat, hanem mások tanácsait is figyelembe vesszük. A mû alapvetõen a program elsõszámú alkotójának, Helmut Hoffman professzor szakmai nagyságát tükrözi, aki három fejezettõl eltekintve, lényegében az egész könyvet megalkotta. Stephen A. Halkovic úr, az Indiana Egyetem Uralista és Altajisz- tikai Tanszékének tanára, írta az elsõ fejezetet. „A jelenlegi poltikai helyzet” címet viselõ negyedik fejezet Dr. Yang Ho- chin munkája, míg a nyolcadik fejezetet „Hagyományos Tibet társadalmi és gazdasági rendszere” címmel Thubten J. Norbu professzor készítette. Dr. Stanley Frye, az Indiana Egyetem Uralista és Altajisztikai Tanszékének korábbi Ph.D. ösztöndíjasa volt a fõszerkesztõ. Munkájában Karin Ford asszony segítette, aki az irodalomjegyzéket is ellenõrizte. Jane Thatcher asszony angyali türelemmel legépelte és újragépelte a kéziratot. Program- igazgatóként tudásom legjavát nyújtottam, hogy összehangol- jam a programban résztvevõk munkáját, így a végeredmény sok tekintetben az én elképzeléseimet tükrözi abban a tekintetben, hogy milyennek is kellene a Kézikönyvnek lenni. A munkatársak nagy hálával tartoznak Julia A. Petrov asszony- nak az Oktatási Osztálynál, amiért nehézségeink iránt oly megértõ volt. Tibet földrajzi helyzete A Tibeti-felföld (lényegében a történelmi Tibet) nagyjából 900 000 négyzetmérföldnyi területet ölel fel, hozzávetõlegesen az Egyesült Államok összterületének egynegyedét. Ez a legma- gasabban fekvõ és a legnagyobb kiterjedésû fennsík a Földön, hiszen nyugaton Ladaktól, hozzávetõlegesen a keleti hosszúság 79. fokától egészen a keleten levõ Dar-rce mdóig (kín. Ta- csien- lúig) 102. hosszúsági fokig terjed. Észak-déli irányban az északi szélesség 28. fokától a 39. fokig húzódik. Déli határát a Himálaja, míg a északit a Kunlun és az Altin Tag hegyvonulatai jelentik. Lényegében a Tibeti-fennsík képezi az Ázsiát északi és déli irányban kettéosztó, kelet-nyugati irányban futó, ún. köz- ponti hegyrendszer szívét. Az északon és délen található hegylán- cok egymáshoz képest ellentétes cikk-cakkjának köszönhetõen Tibet alakja némiképp ovális. A politikai értelemben vett Tibet kisebb, nagyjából Texas, Új-Mexikó és Utah állam összterületét,

The degree program consists of two interconnected elements: a language of specialization (LOS), which gives a student access to the culture of a given region through the voices of its people; and a region of specialization (ROS), which includes courses on various aspects of the region's culture.
