Healy School of Biological Sciences (Zoology, A08), University of Sydney; 2006, New South Wales, Australia ABSTRACT: Ultrastructural observations on spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of selected pyramidellid gastropods (species of Turbonilla, ~gulina, Cingufina and Hinemoa) are presented. During spermatid development, the condensing nucleus becomes initially anterio-posteriorly com- pressed or sometimes cup-shaped. Concurrently, the acrosomal complex attaches to an electron- dense layer at the presumptive anterior pole of the nucleus, while at the opposite (posterior) pole of the nucleus a shallow invagination is formed to accommodate the centriolar derivative. Midpiece formation begins soon after these events have taken place, and involves the following processes: (1) the wrapping of individual mitochondria around the axoneme/coarse fibre complex; (2) later internal metamorphosis resulting in replacement of cristae by paracrystalline layers which envelope the matrix material; and (3) formation of a glycogen-filled helix within the mitochondrial derivative (via a secondary wrapping of mitochondria). Advanced stages of nuclear condensation {elongation, transformation of fibres into lamellae, subsequent compaction) and midpiece formation proceed within a microtubular sheath ('manchette'). THE EFFECT OF THE ECfOPARASITIC PYRAMIDELLID SNAIL, BOONEA IMPRESSA, ON THE GROWTH AND HEALTH OF OYSTERS, CRASSOSTREA VIRGINICA, UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS ELIZABETH A. WILSON,' ERIC N. POWELL,' AND SAMMY M. RAY· ABSTRACT BOfYMQ. (= Odostomia) impressa are contagiously distributed on oyster reefs so that some oysters are parasitized more than others. The parasite's mobility and the ability of oysters to recover from snail parasitism may be important in assessing the impact ofparasitism on oyster populations. Duringa 4-week exposure period in the field, B. impressa reduced American oyster, CrasS08trea virgillica, growth rate and increased the intensity ofinfection by the protozoan, Perki71/J'U8 (- Dermoeystidium) marillUB, but produced few changes in the oyster's biochemical composition because. although net productivity was reduced, the oysters retained a net positive energy balance (assimilation> respiration). During a 4-week recovery period, growth rate returned to normal (control) levels, but infection by P. marillUB continued to intensify in previously parasitized oysters kept B. impressa-free. Most changes in biochemical com position during recovery, including increased lipid and glycogen contents, could be attributed to the con tinuing increase in infection intensity of P. marillUB. Consequently, the temporal stability and size of snail patches. particularly as they regulate infection by P. marillUB, may be the most important factors influencing the impact of B. impressa on oyster reefs. Parasitism can be an important factor affecting the abundantly on oyster reefs from Massachusetts to population dynamics (Wickham 1986; Brown and the Gulf of Mexico, B. impressa has been reported Brown 1986; Kabat 1986) and health (Brockelman in numbers as high as 100 per oyster (Hopkins 1956). -

FULL ACCOUNT FOR: Boonea bisuturalis Boonea bisuturalis System: Marine Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Animalia Mollusca Gastropoda Heterostropha Pyrmidellidae Common name two-groove odostome (English) Synonym Odostimia bisuturalis , (Say, 1822) Turritella bisuturalis , (Say, 1822) Similar species Summary Boonea bisuturalis is native to the St. Lawrence River and the northwest Atlantic coast. It primarily feeds on other molluscs and grasses. It is an extoparisitic species and feeds on internal parts of its prey. It can be found under rocks at the line of low tide. B. bisuturalis has been introduced further south to the Gulf of Mexico and San Francisco. This species has been introduced to Califonia through contaminated oyster stock. view this species on IUCN Red List Species Description Boonea bisuturalis has a small shell that is ovate and conical. The shell is whitish with a single revolving line between the suture. The surface is smooth with five or six whorls and a distinct line revolves just before the suture. The whorl at the bottom is larger than the other whorls; it makes up about half the shell's length. B. bisuturalis has a bluish-white pillar lip that is smooth and rounded. Within the shell there is a lip that is turned outwards, which produces an umbililcal chink. The length is 5.08mm and the width is 2.54mm (Gould, 1870). Notes Boonea bisuturalis is an ectoparasitic snail (Ray, 2005), which means that it lives outside its hosts body and feeds on its internal fluids and tissue.
