TIKI BAR #7

This month both Michelle & Tom Becker better known as "Latitude" stopped by to say hello and of course answer a few questions:

1. What is your favorite drink? T - All depends on the mood. Rum Jumbie is always a good option. M - I don't have a favorite, but it's got to involve rum. Dark & Stormy, Rum Jumbie/club soda/lime, Mai Tai, etc...

2. If we looked into your cd collection what artists would we find? T - Jim Croce, Steely Dan, John Denver, James Taylor, too many more to mention. M - The music of our friends and fellow Trop Rock Troubadours!

3. How many instruments do you play? T - 6 & 12 String guitar, mandolin and recently 6 string banjo & ukulee. M - Keyboard and I'm hoping to dust off my old violin and be able to add that back to my list.

4. Did you have any formal training? T - No M - Yes. My dad was a drummer who's "day job" was selling pianos. We had a beautiful baby grand in our house, and being a typical kid, I wanted to play ANYTHING other than piano, so my first instrumunt was violin. I started taking lessons in 3rd grade. By 6th grade, I was becoming more interested in singing, and realized that the piano was a better insrrument to "sing along to", so I caved in, and started taking piano lessons in 6th grade. I added voice lessons when I got to high school. God bless my mom, who took money out of the grocery budget to pay for my lessons. (I don't think my dad ever knew that the lessons cost more than $5.00 !)

5. At what age did you realize that you wanted to play TropRock music? T - I don't think it was a certain age as much as it was to discover that some of the styles of musicthat I liked seemed to have a theme that is now considered TropRock. M - I always loved tropical music, and the songs that I listened to on the beach growing up are still special to me. I grew up in New England, but I was never a cold weather person, so anything tropical interested me. I was writing songs about the laid-back lifestyle before I even knew there was such a thing as TropRock, so i suppose it was always a part of me. I just didn't know there was a name for it until we were "discovered" by the Parrotheads in 1996!

6. Who do you enjoy playing with? T - First off I would say my wife Michelle. After that I enjoy playing with anyone I can learn something from. M - Obviously, I enjoy playing music with my husband, Tom. Fifteen years ago (wow!), when we decided to join forces and work together, we didn't know if anyone else would enjoy it, but we knew that WE WOULD!!! We also love to sit in with our friends, and we LOVE getting as many talented friends on stage with us as possible. I know the audiences love it when we all come together, but there is no way that they could love it more than WE DO!

7. We love to see you play in Key West. Is it as much fun for you as it is for us? T - It's always fun when we see our audience enjoying it. M - I know that people have a good time at our shows, but for us, between watching everyone else having fun, and the joy of getting to play our own music, I just don't think it could get any "funner" than that! People always tell uss, "you look like you're having so much fun." I guess it shows!

8. Where is your favorite vacation spot? T - The place I have yet to visit. M - Every time I visit a new tropical location, it becomes my new favorite. From our last Latitude Cruise in January, I'd have to say my new favorite is Curacao, but I LOVE the beauty and the wonderful people in the Hawaiian Islands. That's why our next Latitude Cruise in February is a hawaiian Island Cruise! We want to experience this beautiful place with our friends!

9. Name 5 of your favorite places to play. T - I can't name 5 places because it's more about the people than it is the place. Don't get me wrong. We have played some wonderful places but the response from the audience is what makes it a favorite. M - Yikes! I'm just happy and grateful to be able to play our music ANYWHERE for the amazing people who are part of our lives! But if it's got warm weather, palm trees and blue water, that is a definite bonus!

10. Do you have any pets roaming around the Becker household? T - We have a 12 year old Westie. She is the best! M - We've got a 12 year old West Highland Terrier named Missy. We rescued her when she was 10 months old, and she is the sweetest thing ever! She travels with us whenever possible, and balances out our crazy lives!

11. How difficult is it to work together all the time? Trick question, we already know the answer! T - I like to say that of all the states we play my favorite is the state of bliss that I am in anytime I am near Michelle. M - I wouldn't say it's a challenge, but there have been some interesting stories that come out of that microphone. Our lives are really an open book. And it's so great to be able to share this musical journey with the person who means the most to you!

12. If you had not become a musician what would you have done for a living? T - I think I would have like to have been a pilot. I love flying. M - Music and songwriting are ways of communicating to people, and they give people a way to express themselves. I believe music should encourage people, give them a voice, and a place to go to that will lighten the load of everyday life. So even when I'm not playing music, I want to "shine a little light" on the people around me. So music or no music, I apply that passion to whatever life throws my way! I would still be a "communicator". Maybe I'd be the next Oprah?!?

13. Do you have a favorite television show or book? T - I like reading autobiographies. The most recent one I read was by Don Felder from the Eagles. M - I used to teach Ballroom Dancing, so I love "Dancing With the Stars" It's fascinating to me to see people doing something that is outside their comfort zone -- in front of millions of people! I also love to read autobiographies and books that are pure escape, depending on my mood!

14. What is your favorite movie? T - I don't really have a favorite. M - I can't think of a favorite. Again, it just depends on my mood!

15. Name one thingabout yourself that would shock your fans. T - It's not a shocker but something they may not know. I accomplished a solo flight in an airplane before I got my driver's permit in high school. M - Writing songs in my shower!

16. Your songs are wonderful, do they all come from personnel experiences? T - For me most of them do. Although I sometimes put myself in an imaginary situation to write a song. M - Most of them are!

17. Where do you write most of your songs? T - Anywhere. In the car, at home or anywhere I have some alone time. M - This drives Tom absolutely crazy, but I write alot of my songs in the shower! For some reason, great ideas have come out of there! I'll get out of the shower, throw a towel over me, and write down a half finished song before I even blow dry my hair. If I wait too long to write it down, I'll forget.

18. How does your family feel about having a TropRock Super Star living with them? T - My dog could care less. M - My family is supportive. They know I've been an Island Girl all my life regardless of where I was raised, so it really comes as no surprise that I've followed this path. It combines the things I love most -- music and tropical places!

19. What is your favorite mode of transportation? T - Airplane or Sailboat. M - I love to be on or in the water -- swimming, sailing, powerboating. When not on the water, my favorite mode of transportation is my feet!

20. What is your favorite food? T - Too many to list. M - I love to eat, but I'm not much of a cook, so my favorite food is anything I don't have to cook!

We hope to see you all at one of our shows, or somewhere in the conga line! Please check out our wbsite: wwwlatitudemusic.net

That does it for this month, thanks for stopping at Tiki Bar #7, Marianne & Al

On Oct. 14th at 5 O’clock in the evening broke the World Record for the largest margarita ever made as verified by Guinness World Records. The event was part of the Grand Opening festivities for the new Margaritaville Casino at Flamingo in Las Vegas.

Halfway through the ceremony celebrating the new World Record, surprised fans by coming out and raising a glass of Lucky Rita with the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team along with Flamingo’s Rick Mazer and Margaritaville’s Tamara Baldanza in front of more than 1,000 Parrotheads and onlookers.

“Much appreciation for these great wounded warriors, who I’ve worked with for a long time. Gentleman, thank you for coming out. We’re going to have a good time this weekend. Let the FIN begin,” said Buffett.

Lucky Rita is now on sale to the public allowing guests a taste of history and an opportunity to contribute to a great cause. For every gallon of Lucky Rita sold, Margaritaville will donate $5 to the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team. More than a margarita, Lucky Rita is a concoction with a cause.

“I am thrilled we have expanded our relationship with Margaritaville,” said Rick Mazer president of Flamingo Las Vegas, “and now together we have opened the first-ever Margaritaville Casino.”

After six months of planning, the mixing of the colossal 8,500 gallon beverage, appropriately named “Lucky Rita,” began its first pour on Oct. 11, 2011. Lucky Rita took an estimated 300 work hours to mix the concoction.

PARROT HEAD NEWS!!!! Long Island Happy Hour November 19th WRAPPED WITH LOVE FUNDRAISER November Happy Hour

It is that time of year to collect bath towels and small- medium blankets for the No Kill Shelters of Long Island. They were especially hit hard this year because of the economy and shelter damage from Tropical Storm Irene.

Thanks to the generous support of the Metro Parrot Heads last year at our Happy Hour, we were able to drop off monthly supplies at no kill shelters for 10 months! Cleaning supplies, food and towels/blankets were supplied to the delight of the shelters and volunteers. Many had never heard of Parrot Heads before, but we were told over and over again to thank you all a million times plus. Some months when we dropped off supplies they were down to their last bags of food. The Freeport Animal Shelter alone (taken over by Bobbi & The Strays in March) currently are taking care of approximately 200 cats and 30 dogs . As you can imagine supplies run out rather quickly.

So please join us at Casa Straaik ... We will be collecting dog & cat food (wet and dry), bath sized towels, and small- medium blankets. If you cannot make Happy Hour please feel free to send a check or drop off supplies to:

Marianne & Al Straaik 25 Rhode Island Avenue Massapequa, NY 11758 Please put "Wrapped with Love" in the memo line

Jimmy Buffet autographed items (straight from the man himself!), Spa basket, Key West Basket, Stella Artois Picnic Trunk and more will be raffled off to help us meet our goal.

If an animal ever touched your life....please give generously to those that do not have a loving home

The Metro North Happy Hour Takes place on the second Tuesday of each month (with the exception of November). 6:30 pm at the East Side Cafe in Norwalk, CT anyone planning on attending should RSVP to Carol a [email protected] so that table space can be reserved.

Parrot Heads to Spread Their Wings in Key West Nov. 3-6

KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Subtropical Key West is widely credited with inspiring singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett’s smash hit “Margaritaville” and other tunes. Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, some 3,500 of Buffett’s “Parrot Head” fans are to spread their wings on the island during their 20th annual convention.

The convention is titled “Don’t Stop the Carnival,” recalling Buffett’s album and stage play based on the Herman Wouk novel of the same name.

Events include a concert by Buffett’s , beachside performances, a charity auction and raffles, the TropRock Music Awards, a street festival with live music and a “Beach Bash” at the Casa Marina, a Waldorf Astoria resort on the Atlantic Ocean at 1500 Reynolds St.

The anticipated entertainment highlight is a showcase at the Casa Marina by the entire Coral Reefer Band. Members include songwriter/performer Mac MacAnally, keyboard master , steel drum wizard , guitarist Peter Mayer, pedal steel guitar player Doyle Grisham and vocalists Nadirah Shakoor and Tina Gullickson.

Convention attendees also can enjoy music by favorites including Howard Livingston and Mile Marker 24, John Frinzi, the Sunny Jim Band and more.

Even Buffett himself occasionally makes a surprise appearance. The internationally acclaimed entertainer, whose lyrics contain frequent Key West references, established his first Margaritaville Store and Margaritaville Café on the island and maintains a recording studio overlooking the former shrimp docks.

Events at the Casa Marina are not open to the public, but only to registered Parrot Head club members. The public can attend the Margaritaville Street Fest, planned for 1-6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, near Margaritaville at Duval and Fleming streets. Scheduled entertainers include the Young Rebel Goombas, Mr. Myers Band and Michael Armstrong & the Key West Band.

As well as Buffett’s music and associated tropical lifestyle, Parrot Heads embrace charitable, environmental, educational and humanitarian activities. Since 2002, members of the more than 200 national and international Parrot Head chapters have contributed $22.1 million and nearly 2.7 million volunteer hours to local and national charities.
