TALES FROM MY BANK OF BAD HABITS

PHIP doesn’t publish money raised or man hours worked per club, but I think we are in pretty good standing on one of these, and it’s not man hours worked. We reported a total of 1065 man hours. This covers things like the road cleanups, working with the Wounded Warriors Project, organizing and working Metro & Morris in Bridgeport, and organizing or working some of the other events we hosted. 1065 man hours for 270 members; I think we can do better.

The area of money raised for charity is a different story. In 2010 we raised and donated $33,378 to charity. Here’s the two major money raisers; Metro & Morris $15,886 and the NYC and Rockland County Memory Walks $11,058. The balance of $6,434 was raised at the Long Island Happy Hours, Booze Cruise, Frosted Party and a couple other smaller events. I certainly think we can be proud of this accomplishment.

One other addition to the above is hundreds of pounds of non-perishable food, clothing, pet food and supplies and toys. We actually came up with a total of over a half ton.

So there you have it, our 2010 statistics.

So, ok about a month ago, 3 Metro Parrothead gals came up with this great idea that was born of Fishbowls. Yes, I said fish bowls. Ralph Watruba, otherwise known as the “Big Guy”, gave us a bunch of fish bowls for us to use as centerpieces for the Frosted Parrothead Party. Stella’s mind began to race and she is the one who came up with the idea using live fish in the centerpieces. The centerpieces notwithstanding, this article is not really about live fish or even centerpieces, but what thinking and working together can do for friendships. You see it took a lot of creativity and sharing of ideas to come up with the the fish bowl oasis that all of us at the party had on our tables. It took Sue and Ray painstakingly making those little beach chairs and great little surf boards. It took Stella’s hours of cutting and gluing Styrofoam into the bowls, making little tiny beach towels and taking care of those fish and making sure that she gave them a good send off by supplying those who were lucky enough to take one home with instructions for care and feeding. We spent countless hours at craft and bargain stores finding more and more “stuff” as our ideas began to take off. We spent about 3 weekends together as friends exchanging ideas, laughing and talking and doing what friends do when we need to help out. This is not an article written to pat ourselves on the back but to let all of you know how much we enjoyed the camaraderie we experienced and the good feeling we got when everything in the room was put together and all the decorations were up and the lights were lowered. And we looked at one another and said “it is done.” It is at that moment that you forget the burned fingers from the hot glue gun, or the countless hours of ideas that fail and you have to come up with something else, and you start to remember the times when you laughed so hard that you couldn’t even breathe. Together with help from some more friends, like Bosco who loaned out his wonderful blow ups, Lorraine Bosshard who loaned out her tropical fabrics for the tables, (and by the way if you happened to take one off the table, please return it to her), Ray and Ralph who took care of getting us the great venue and accommodations we had, and all the great folks who donated raffle prizes, like the guitar, the camera, the Tiki Beach Bar oasis, the cigars and humidor, the chairs, the dartboard, the Spring Phling tickets, the door prizes, and the John Baldwin Basket, just to name a few, it all came together for a great cause…Long Island Cares. Being a Metro Parrothead is a lot more than just listening to great TropRock and dancing. It’s even more than doing charitable works. For some of us, it really is a way of life in that the friends we have made are like family and sometimes even better. These are folks you chose to be close to because you find a common element. You share your joys and your sorrows, your victories and your defeats…..and yes your bottle of Patron, Souza or Grey Goose. During the evening’s festivities, Ray made an announcement that took me off guard and quite by surprise. He said that the club had resurrected the Parrothead of the Year Award and that this year it was being given to me and Eric. It was a complete surprise and certainly something we never expected as we don’t do this for acclimation. We do it for love. We really love our friends, and we really love the fact that we can give back to some great causes because it makes us feel really good inside. So, next time there is a project to do or an event to plan, and you have some great ideas to share or you are really crafty or have some connections with folks who can help us out with a venue for something like a Happy Hour or anything that will bring you closer to another Metro Parrothead, give it some thought. I know that there are some people who I now consider to be “family” in my eyes because I chose to help out and I can’t even imagine my life without them.

18th Annual Family Picnic

Where: Fresh Pond Park, Amagansett, NY

What Time: 10 AM - Dusk (or whenever the mosquitos arrive)

The park’s been reserved for our ... the weather will be there. We’re looking for a volunteer(s) to help organize the picnic. Being Parrot Heads, perhaps “organize” is not quite the proper term, but you know what we mean. In the past, the Club will provide, burgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob and soft drinks. Who ever volunteers to oversee the picnic will have to purchase the basics (the Club will reimburse you). Everyone who attends is usually really good about to provide a dish or something to share, so there’s always plenty of food.

Anyone who wishes to volnteers can contact either Joe Lombardi, Ralph Wotruba or Ray Leudesdorff. Wounded Warriors Need Our Help!

Soldier Ride - The Hamptons takes place on July 23, 2011 (the same day as the METRO Family Picnic. For the past two years, our Club has staffed the water station at Cyril’s.

For those of you who may not know, Soldier Ride is a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project. Participants get to bike the course along with wounded veteran's from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. The cause is a favorite of Jimmy Buffett's and he's supports the efforts both up here and down in Key West (there’s a ride from Miami to Key West each January).

Once again, we'll be setting up near Cyril's on the Napeague stretch. Just a short walk across Montauk Highway for the bar known for some of the best frozen drinks in The Hamptons. A community service event at a bar, it's what Parrot Heads do best.

All kidding aside, we can certainly sacrifice a few hour of picnic time in order to help those men and women who sacrificed a great deal more.

Anyone interested in participating in the Soldier Ride Event can mail Joe Lombardi at [email protected]

Three Ladies

This is the story of three ladies who came from 3 different families that had no idea that the others existed till several years ago and by a strange twist of fate and maybe just maybe one too many adult beverages or was it the allure of the music or the call of the tropics they became friends. Maybe friends is not the correct term I think it should be partners in crime. Well they have been doing amazing things together since then and I want to take the time to thank them for all the hard work time effort and an incredible amount of talent and creativity to help make this year’s Frosted one of the BEST EVER!!

My Heartfelt Thanks go out to Donna Lorraine Sue I truly do love you all

Buffett and Chesney Perform at Everglades Benefit

2011 Jazz Fest Poster Features Buffett 0. The official 2011 New Orleans Jazz Fest poster, dubbed “Busking Out: Becoming Jimmy Buffett,” features a young Jimmy painted by Garland Robinette:

An accomplished romantic realist, Robinette offers a look back at Mississippi-born Buffett playing for passers-by on a French Quarter street corner circa 1967, bygone blond hair bobbing to the rhythm of his acoustic guitar. Busking is slang for performing in the street for tips.

The artist captures Buffett’s sunny persona perfectly in with what seems to be a beam of celestial light piercing the steamy south Louisiana sky. Robinette’s somber handling of the balconied Creole townhouse in the background is a nice contrast with the cascade of buoyant colors in Buffett’s Hawaiian shirt and the scarlet parrot fluttering in the distance..
