PROJECT OVERVIEW ABOUT THE PROJECT Babson College is a private college founded in 1919 which offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs in business and entrepreneurship. The College has three campuses: Wellesley, downtown Boston, and San Francisco. The College’s main campus is in Wellesley with a portion of the main campus in Needham. This Site Plan Approval and Special Permit submission is for Centennial Park (the “Project”), which consists of the relocation and refurbishment of two iconic landmarks on the campus - the Babson World Globe and the Fountain of Flags. These two features will be nestled within an existing open space which will be modified to accommodate them and also serve as a new gathering space. The site is located along Babson College Drive, directly across from the Reynolds Campus Center and Sorenson Theater. The creation of Centennial Park will not only mark the 100-year anniversary of the College’s founding, but represents the diversity of Babson’s students, faculty, and staff and highlights Babson’s commitment to being a leader in entrepreneurial education throughout the world. Campus Plan showing location of proposed Centennial Park site May 8, 2018 Centennial Park Submission to ZBA for Site Plan Approval and Special Permit HISTORY OF THE BABSON WORLD GLOBE The Babson World Globe is an iconic landmark of the Babson College campus and has been located on Map Hill Drive near the College’s upper fields behind Coleman (residence) Hall. The Globe measures 28 feet in diameter and weighs 25 tons. The Globe originated in 1947 from the ideas and notions of the College’s founder, Roger Babson, and his grandson Roger Webber, who thought a giant globe would complement the Great Relief Map of the United States on display in Coleman Hall (now since removed). The Globe was designed to rotate on its axis to simulate the cycle of the day and also rotate to simulate the cycle of the seasons. It quickly became a destination not only for the campus community, but for thousands of viewers from the region, including school children. Roger Babson dedicating the Globe on June 18, 1955 Page 9 of 21 Originally built as a visual representation of Roger Babson’s founding vision, the Globe was meant to “impress upon students and other viewers an appreciation of the world as a whole…[stimulating] an interest in world geography, history, economics, transportation, and trade.” The Globe was intended to be housed in an enclosed pavilion. When that did not come to fruition, the Globe fell into disrepair when exposed to the elements for many years. By the late 1970s, the Globe had fallen into such disrepair that crowds diminished. By 1983, some of the 574 enameled tiles that formed the outer surface of the Globe had fallen off. Babson administration made the decision to remove all remaining tiles and send them to storage. In the five years that followed, the machinery and electrical system that made the Globe spin stopped working. In 1988, the administration made the difficult decision to demolish the Globe given its neglect and high price tag to restore. However, a Save the Globe committee rallied the community and postponed the demolition of the Globe. Preservation efforts prevailed and the Globe was full restored and re-dedicated in 1993. RELOCATION OF THE GLOBE AND THE CREATION OF CENTENNIAL PARK In March 2018, as part of many exciting new capital projects helping to transform Babson’s campus for its second century, the Globe was moved from its current location to begin much-needed restoration and updating. During refurbishment, the Globe will sit safely within scaffolding in Babson’s Trim Parking Lot—a site where the Babson community will be able to read about the Globe’s history, updates, and engineering going into its year-long restoration. As part of the Globe’s restoration plan, a team of engineers is investigating how to make the Globe once again rotate—something it has not been able to do since the mechanics stopped working shortly after its re-dedication. On March 23, 2018, the Globe was removed from its base and transported across campus May 8, 2018 Centennial Park Submission to ZBA for Site Plan Approval and Special Permit In May 2019, in time for Babson’s Centennial Commencement ceremonies, the Globe will be unveiled in its new location—Babson Centennial Park— a centralized, eye-catching community gathering space. It will be located along Babson College
