Holocaust Educational Trust Lessons from Auschwitz Project Briefing for Nicola Sturgeon MSP, First Minister One day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau – background information Tuesday 30th October Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project The Holocaust Educational Trust’s Lessons from Auschwitz Project for post-16 students and teachers is now in its nineteenth year and has taken over 37,000 students and teachers from across the UK to the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The four-part course is open to two students from every school and college in England, Scotland and Wales, and incorporates a one-day visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The visits, combined with Orientation and Follow-Up Seminars, leave an unforgettable emotional and educational mark on participants. The Project aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust based on the premise that ‘hearing is not like seeing’ and to signal what can happen if prejudice and racism become acceptable. Since 2009 funding has been provided by the Scottish Government, enabling us to deliver two Lessons from Auschwitz Projects per year from Scotland. We are grateful to the Scottish Government for its support and we currently receive a grant of £296,000 per annum to deliver the project. This current round of funding runs to April 2019. The Lessons from Auschwitz Project is open to two students aged 16-18 (in S5 or S6) from each secondary school in Scotland. The Project is promoted by a mailing being sent to schools with details of each course and a brochure (see attached). The Project is well established in schools across Scotland with demand for places being high. -

Lourdes Secondary School Easter Newsletter March 2018 Dear Parent/Carer This time of year is always incredibly busy at Lourdes as our Senior pupils prepare for their SQA exams. Staff have been working closely with pupils to help them achieve their academic goals and to maintain faith in their abilities. Our younger pupils have engaged in a variety of exciting learning experiences across the school and have been choosing their subject options for next session. We have also been wel- coming our new S1 pupils into Lourdes through a series of transition events. Current indications are that the roll in S1 will be the biggest in recent years, with around 280 pupils. We are very much looking for- ward to welcoming our newest and youngest members of the community in May for their formal in- duction days. Our new S1 pupils will be measured by Logo Xpress, our uniform suppliers, in their cur- rent primary school and their blazers will be delivered there. Logo Xpress (T: 01786 447454 www.logoxpress.cp.uk) will attend the Primary 7 Parents’ Information Evening on Thursday 19th April. More details about these arrangements will be made available to parents early in the new term. You may have already heard your child talking about RAKTIVISM this session. In February Lourdes Secondary School launched its first ever Raktivism week- a kindness scavenger hunt with over 100 items to attempt to increase our kindness towards others. This was a beautiful week with pupils and staff showing their gratitude towards each other and those in our local community. -

NORTH LANARKSHIRE COUNCIL REPORT To: EDUCATION COMMllTEE Subject: THE EDUCATIONAL E NDO W ME NTS (STRATHCLYDE REGION) TRANSFER SCHEME 1996 From: DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION Date: 23 April, 1996 Ref: JF/EH 1 Background 1.1 Following consideration of representations made by, inter alios, North Lanarkshire Council the Secretary of State for Scotland has made The Educational Endowments (Strathclyde Region) Transfer Scheme Order 1996. A copy of the letter of 1 April advising of the making of that Order, and of the Order itself, is attached as the Appendix to this report. 2 Effect of Mer 2.1 The Order transfers the endowments of the Dunbartonshire Educational Trust and the McAulay bequest from Strathclyde Regional Council to a body corporate to be known as The Governors of the Dunbartonshire Educational Trust. The composition of that body is to be one person to be elected by Argyll and Bute Council, three persons to be elected by East Dunbartonshire Council, three persons to be elected by West Dunbartonshire Council and three persons to be elected by North Lanarkshire Council. All such persons must be members of the relevant Councils. The Committee is asked to recommend three members for appointments as Governors of the Dunbartonshire Educational Trust. 2.2 The Order provides that the governing body of the Dunbartonshire Educational Trust may appoint such officers as they consider necessary to undertake administrative work. The Committee is asked to consider whether North Lanarkshire Council should offer to undertake such administrative work as is required for the administration of the Trust on the basis that costs will be recharged to the Trust.
