2017 The Beach Beat!

Board Meeting Minutes 2 Message from our President…

July was a great month for the club. We had about 25% of our club members at each dance. Our “Subs On The Club” Operation Uplink Planning 3 night was enjoyed by all who attended. DJ Roy Childress kept the dance floor full. DJ Jerry Burrage entertained all at Operation Uplink Letter 4 the Moose dance. Summer time weather is keeping it hot. I am pushing 60 miles in my daily ocean swimming and am ready to start again after our recent visit to California to see the grandchildren.

Operation Uplink Flyer 5 Our first dance this month is right around the corner on August 11th at the VFW. It will be a new theme: “Bring Wings and Things”. Many club members are chicken wing aficionados. We hope it goes well. We are asking club members to SOS Fun Sunday & Monday 6 bring wings or something to compliment the wings. Our dance at the Moose will be themed “Howl at The Moon” as there is a Lunar eclipse soon. Our leftover food purchases from Beach Day will provide the Hotdogs and Burgers for our Remember ? 7 summer cookout at the VFW September 8th.

Welcome new SOBS & Guests 8 Summertime is definitely here with many places available to go and dance. The Sunday afternoon concerts at Holden Beach draw good crowds, including some SOBS. We continue to need volunteers to sign up to be Door Greeters and do August Birthdays 8 the 50/50 at upcoming dances. Both of these offer opportunities to get to know other club members. It is good to see so many of our members help with the decorations and cleanup. August DJ Bios 9 I am working with Sam and Lisa West to have the Junior Shaggers for a demonstration at the September 22 nd Moose Dance Schedule 10 dance. In addition we will have a dance shoe donation drive that same night with the shoes going to the Junior Shaggers for refurbishment and to be given to young people who want to learn to dance, so look in your closets. I know Summer Concert Series 11 I have some to give.

July Dance Pictures 12 Our club has for sale SOS Fun Monday tickets for September’s Fall Migration SOS. In mentioning SOS, I am in the process of making the arrangements for our traditional Fall Migration SOS “Freepour” at the OD Pavilion, for Saturday, SOBS Membership Form 14 September 16th starting at 2 PM until the money is spent. I will continue to stress the importance of these tickets.

We are also getting ready for our Operation Uplink VFW Fundraiser which will be at the first October dance. The Raffle tickets and information letters are approved and will be available at our first August dance and online around the first of August. If any club members are interested in some dance lessons; VP Chuck & Sandy Boney will be starting their Fall lessons in Southport and Leland the first weeks in September, Katy & I will be starting ours in August at Stone Chimney Senior Center and in Calabash . Let Chuck or me know if any of you folks are interested. These lessons are through Brunswick County Parks and Recreation.

Our next board meeting date is still to be decided due to scheduling conflicts. Let us know if there are club issues that you would like to see us address. On a sad note, former SOBS President Bill Ruth passed away last week. He was a fine man, a great DJ and a good friend. He was our club’s 3rd President and began our relationship with our VFW home here on Oak Island. The Shag community is a lesser place. We hope to see you on the dance floor! August 15, 1969 -

SECRETARY’S REPORT: The June Board Meeting minutes were approved.

OLD BUSINESS: The June Dance at the VFW was well even though there were some computer issues to work through. The Moose dance went smoothly with approximately 65 in attendance.

Upcoming dances in July and August:

July 14, at OKI VFW - “Patriotic” Theme, Subs on the Club with DJ Roy Childress & Line Dance lesson July 28, at OKI Moose Lodge - “Summertime “ Theme, Moose Menu with DJ Jerry Burrage & Shag Dance lesson August 11, at OKI VFW - “Hot Fun in the Summer time” Theme, Bring Wings & Things with DJ Mike Hudson & Line Dance lesson August 25, at OKI Moose Lodge, “ Howl at the Moon “ Theme, Moose Menu with DJ Terry McPhail & Shag Dance lesson

Oak Island Beach Day, July 1: Shag Contest – no club members won even though we had the home court advantage! Food Booth – approximately $180 ahead on sales with burgers and dogs to use for September cookout. Coolers – John didn’t know that coolers would be allowed so that hurt our drink sales. Learning point for the future! Thanks to all who assisted. If we decide to do it again, we know what adjustments need to be made.

Cathy & Francis Myers to attend ACSC Summer Workshop hosted by the Lake Norman Shag Club, representing the club and missing the July 14th club dance. Cathy will mention that some of the SOS ticket purchasers are not receiving the Carefree Times.

NEW BUSINESS: “Subs on the Club” will be purchased from Subway: ham & cheese, veggie & cheese, roast beef & cheese and tuna. Cost will be $234.18 including condiment tray.

Operation Uplink: Begin ticket sales/distribution at first August Dance or before. Approved flyers and information letters will be available in paper and online. Early donations include Vic Gillespie “Shag Themed” Art Prints, DJ John Hook a possible hotel package donation, and also CDs from DJ Gene Sistare. DJ Claude Collins has mentioned donating as well.

The sale of Fun Monday tickets continues. Nine sold so far. Club will purchase 5 tickets.

The entree for our Christmas Dinner at the Moose Lodge, Chicken Cordon Bleu, may be cost prohibitive. We are checking other possible alternatives.

The SOBS Banner has been replaced and re-hung in the OD Pavilion and fits the spot perfectly.

We will ask members to bring “Bring Wings & Things” for our August dance at the VFW. Members are invited to bring their favorite wings and other good things to eat!

Discussions with Sam West regarding the Junior Shaggers demonstration continue. It is scheduled for the September 22 nd Dance.

Roger Arbizu’s Lions Club charity donation was discussed. It was decided to concentrate our charitable efforts on our usual donations.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT: Joe reports that we are holding at a record 222 members! The Website is up to date. Katy O’Neill will send pictures of Beach Day to Joe so he can put them on the Website. Joe will prepare club member address labels and club return address labels for the Operation Uplink ticket mail out.

Meeting was adjourned at 6:43 PM.

Society of Brunswick Shaggers - PO Box 274 - Oak Island, NC 28465 www.societyofbrunswickshaggers.com Greetings Fellow SOBS,

It is with great excitement that we begin the preparations for our “Operation Uplink” event to be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at the OKI Moose Lodge #2059 Family Center. This annual event includes a dance with legendary DJ John “Fessa” Hook, a Silent auction and a multi-item raffle. The Moose Lodge menu and a full cash bar will be available. All profits from the event will be donated to the VFW’s Operation Uplink and Brunswick County’s New Hope Clinic.

VFW’s Operation Uplink provides free call days and Internet time to service men and women across the globe. Hospitalized heroes here at home also benefit from the project. Over the past 12 years the Society of Brunswick Shaggers has donated over $40,000 to this worthy cause. For additional information: [email protected] or call (816) 968-1155.

The New Hope Clinic operates a 4,000 sq. ft. facility in Boiling Spring Lakes where they provide care five days per week and lim- ited services offered at a satellite clinic in Shallotte. In addition to primary medical care, they offer specialty clinics for urology, EKG, dental, diabetes treatment, and medical eye care. There is a limited pharmacy onsite and a Pharmacy Assistance Program. A small staff and over 150 volunteers, including doctors, dentists, FNPs, PAs, pharmacists, nurses, medical & dental assistants, and administrative support personnel, contribute annually over 10,000 volunteer hours to provide nearly 6,000 patient encoun- ters. They help nearly 1,000 patients each year, but the need is even greater. For additional information: newhopeclinicfree.org or call (910) 845-5333.

We are inviting you to contribute to this effort. Please consider soliciting items for our auction and raffle. Your community businesses and friends will only know of our event if you help spread the word. A restaurant which you frequent may be inter- ested in donating a gift certificate or a store where you regularly shop may donate an item or a gift card. A letter to introduce our event is being provided to you on page 4 and a flyer on page 5 to print out and take to your friends in the community. The solicitation letter provides a place for you to document the donation in order to properly thank our business community members after the event. It also provides a receipt to the donor. You, yourself may be interested in donating your own handi- work, whether it is a quilt, woodwork, artwork, and jewelry item or pottery piece. Please, only new, unused items. Feel free to purchase items to donate. This is yet another way you can participate.

This year we will be mailing out 10 tickets for you to presell and you may pick up additional tickets at the door at any of the dances. You may sell these for $5 or purchase them yourself prior to the event. The ticket stub will be used for door prize drawings.

In order to plan for space and maintain organization we are asking you to get items to us as soon as possible. We will accept items until noon on the day of event, but we would prefer to have them in hand by September 22nd dance at the OKI Moose Lodge. Here are several delivery options: you may bring items to any of the dances before October 13th; you may drop off items at South Brunswick High School for Katy O’Neill; or call Katy at the number provided and make arrangements to drop off at their home. If you will be bringing a large item to the event (grill, furniture, gardening table, etc.) please assure that one of us is informed! We don’t want to run out of space!

Please don’t hesitate to call us! Thanks for your support of this great event!

SOS Fall Migration “Fun Sunday” & “Fun Monday” …

On the first Sunday & only Monday of the Fall Mi- gration everyone meets in the Street for two of the biggest block parties you have ever seen, Fun Sun- day & Fun Monday. On Fun Sunday the party is in the street beside the OD Arcade. Some of the best names in beach & shag music will help you rock the day away with a few thousand of your closest friends. Don't worry if you can't get enough fun in one day, because on Monday we are gonna' do it all again. For Fun Monday we will pack Main Street from OD to Hillside with every smooth dancing fun lovin' friend that we can find. There will be great music, dancing in the street, & fun to be had by all. We will also have merchandise vendors, food/drink vendors, & displays set up by the SOS sponsors.

Both Fun Sunday & Monday offer you the chance to have a great time during your stay at North Myrtle Beach. But one of the greatest things about these events is known to very few people. They are both funded solely by sales of Fun Monday raffle tickets. That's right. There is no admission charge! How great is that? Two fun filled days. Dozens of great mu- sicians. Thousands of people & more excite- ment than you can imagine. It only takes you $10.00 to make you eligible to be in the draw- ing. The first ticket drawn wins $7,500, the second wins $2,000, the third wins $1,000, the fourth wins $500, and the fifth and final ticket wins $250. Au gust 2017 The Beach B ea t! P ag e 7

Remember “Woodstock Music & Art Fair” August 15-17, 1969… (from http://www.woodstockStory.com)

Yep, it’s been 48 years & some of the bands are still playing!

Woodstock was the pop culture music event of the decade and arguably to this day the single most profound event in the history of music. Acts from all around the world met at ‘s Farm in Bethel, NY on August 15-18, 1969 for a celebration of peace and music. What began as a paid event drew so many viewers from across the world that the fences were torn down and it became a free concert open to the public. 500,000 youthful indi- viduals gathered peacefully at Woodstock 1969 cre- ating the largest gathering of human beings in one place in history. Woodstock 1969 defined an entire generation and its effects on music and American culture can still be felt today. Woodstock ’69 featured one of the most prolific musical lineups in history including such icons as , , , Santana, and . Fans got a taste of a variety of music styles which came together in perfect harmony. The crowd at Woodstock in 1969, which reached near a half a million people sent a message to the world that individuals could come together peacefully to cel- ebrate peace and music. Such an extravagant event warranted the production of an academy award winning documentary of Woodstock 1969 and a number of popular Woodstock film and album releases. The Woodstock 1969 poster has come to be one of the most famous images in American culture as well as a symbol of peace. Hollywood movies are still being made to cele- brate the event such as Taking Woodstock, the story of . The music at Woodstock in 1969 embodied extraordinary popular acts from all over the world. Legendary performances by such music icons as Jimi Hendrix, , Joe Cocker, Santana, the and Janis Joplin are still consid- ered landmarks in music history. Woodstock in 1969 was also among the last performances of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin who are seen as some of the best in their respective fields. The entire psychedelic music vein became popular- ized at Woodstock 69 and still influences bands of all ages to this day. is a term that has not diminished in popularity or as a subculture to this day. The youth of the 1960’s all came together with similar ideals and became the most popular counterculture archetype. The hippie culture shook the foun- dation of conformity to its core, reports of attempts to disperse the half a million individuals have been surfacing ever since the event. Individuals able to organize in that magnitude for a common interest was something that those in power were absolutely terrified of and had every right to be. Had Woodstock 1969’s focus turned from music to revolu- tion, the world would be an entirely different place today. After Woodstock 1969, the name “Woodstock” became a very profitable brand name. The concert was initially designed as a money making endeavor. Woodstock Ventures ended up going far into the basement monetarily after the concert, but eventually recovered and became the corporate enterprise that it is known as today. The recent installments have been seen as corporatized disasters; however, the impact of the initial event is still so profound to this day that any- thing with the Woodstock brand tacked onto it draws a large amount of attention. Woodstock 1969 has since been a household name and integrated into mainstream American living. Au gust 2017 The Beach B ea t! P ag e 8

August DJ Information...

Fellow SOBS… This year is flying by and has given us many great op- portunities to dance. We enjoyed having DJs Roy “Shag Daddy” Chil- dress and Jerry Burrage who did a great job for the club in July. Katy and I wished we could have been there. The ocean and beach contin- ue to offer us so much enjoyment. Spinning the discs for our August dances are:

Friday, August 11th - DJ Mike Hudson @ OKI VFW Friday, August 25th - DJ Terry McPhail @ OKI Moose Lodge

DJ Mike Hudson will be playing our August 11th dance at the VFW. Mike is from Mt. Olive NC, he calls it the “Pickle City”. He and his wife have been married for over 40 years. He grew up shagging and has been a DJ for 20+ years. He has played for many Shag Clubs in both North and South Carolina. He is the regular DJ at “Ribeye’s” in Mt Olive. Mike plays during SOS at Duck’s Beach Club and at the OD Beach Club as well as at the OD Golf Resort/Spanish Galleon complex.

DJ Terry McPhail will be playing for our Friday, August 25th dance at the Moose Lodge. Terry has been involved as a Beach Music DJ for many years and has played for our club many times and has played our clubs’ Valentine’s Day dance for more years than I can remember. The first was held at Duffer’s-old time club members may recall that great dance with Terry. He is retired from a career in the US Army. Every year he has sup- ported our Project Uplink with a DJ Party donation and I hope that he will donate again this year. He and his wife Karen spend their time between Ocean Drive (N. Myrtle Beach) and Elizabethtown, NC. Terry is one of the DJs on the Annual Blues Cruise and is always at the OD Arcade playing the best songs during SOS. Terry loves to take requests, so be certain to ask for your favorites.

We’re back from our vacation with grandchildren and look forward to seeing all you SOBS back on the dance floor.
