This is a Live Auction Only Only those OMSA members registered for the 2013 Convention may bid in the sale. Buyers must be physically present at the auction and must use the numbered bidder card assigned to them during the Convention registration process.

No Buyer’s Premium If the lot is knocked down to you, what you bid is what you pay.

All Items Sold to the Highest Bidder The Auctioneer has the sole discretion to conduct the sale and determine the highest bidder. In the event of any dispute, his decision will be final.

Everything is sold “As is, Where is” Although all lots have been described in good faith there are no guarantees as to description accuracy, item authenticity or condition. Once lots are sold there will be no refunds or returns; therefore, all items should be physically inspected prior to the sale.

Payment and Collection No lots will be released the night of the sale, but rather must be paid for and collected on Friday morning at the Convention Registration Tables between 9 a.m. and Noon. Payment in U.S. dollars accepted by cash, check, credit card (Master Card or Visa), or via PayPal.

On original ribbon and eyehook suspension, and in named lacquered case of issue. 15. COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA – World War I Service Medal. National Guard Type with 28th Division insignia at 6 o’clock. On original ribbon and pin-back broach in box of issue with outer sleeve by Joseph K. Davison & Sons, Inc., Philadelphia. Box also contains a ribbon bar in envelope of issue. Mint condition. 16. USA – Distinguished Flying Cross. WW2 vintage on slot brooch in WW2 named case of issue with lapel button and ribbon bar. 17. SOVIET UNION – Matched pair of WW2 Shoulder Boards for an NKVD Lieutenant 18. STATE OF ILLINOIS – Reserve Militia Weapons Badge with 3 qualification bars: “Submachine Gun Marksman”; “Small Bore Expert’; and “Rifle Marksman.” 19. PAKISTAN (2): Hijri Medal 1979 and Centennial Medal of the Birth of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Founder of the Nation). 20. GREAT BRITAIN – World War 1 Mercantile Marine War Medal in bronze, named to “JOHN LYNCH” 21. USA – Pair to William G. Myers: Bronze Star Medal machine engraved “William G. Myers” and Purple Heart Medal machine engraved “William G. Myers,” both in WW2 named case of issue with ribbon bars and lapel button for BSM. Purple Heart case has some scuffing and staining, but both medals in excellent condition on slot brooches. 22. SOVIET UNION – WW2 era “Excellent Artilleryman” badge with screw-back fastener. Some enamel loss in central red medallion. 24. HUNGARY – WW2 Liberation of Transylvania Medal, on original tri-fold blue ribbon. The medal was instituted on 1 October 1940 to mark the return of part of Transylvania to Hungary. At the end of World War I, Hungary lost almost three-quarters of its territory, many areas with large Hungarian populations, including Transylvania. In mid- 1940, with Romania under pressure from the Soviet Union and Bulgaria, Hungary lodged a claim to Transylvania. 25. GREAT BRITAIN – Silver War Badge #’d B45920 as issued to Lieutenant John Alfred Cousins, Royal Field Artillery. With copy research including Medal Index Card, Silver War Badge Roll confirming number and Officer’s Papers. 26. POLAND – Polonia Restituta Order. Knight’s badge in bronze-gilt and enamel. 27. COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA – 1936 Flood Medal. On original ribbon (fraying in spots) with pin-back. 28. GREAT BRITAIN – Pair to Police Constable W. Mason: 1902 Coronation Medal – Metropolitan Police issue (P.C. W. Mason, T Div.); 1911 Coronation Medal – Metropolitan Police issue (P.C. W. Mason) 29. COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA – Sharpshooter Medal in bronze, officially numbered “572” 35. GREAT BRITAIN – Dress belt and buckle for an officer of “The Wiltshire Regiment”, circa 1950s. Silvered buckle has queen’s crown enameled insignia and is marked “Italy’ on inside. Belt is alternating blue and gold stripes. 36. USA – Group of 4 medals of the USS Puget Sound, Flagship of the United States 6th Fleet. Reverse on all 4 engraved “COMSIXTHFLT / FLAGSHIP / USS PUGET SOUND.” Gilt medal has “1st,” silver has “2nd,” one bronze has “3rd,” and remaining bronze not marked with prize level. No ribbons. 37. SOVIET UNION – Lot of 3 Medals: WW2 Victory Over Germany; WW2 Medal for Heroic Labor; 30th Anniversary of the Soviet Armed Forces 1918-1948. All on original ribbons and period brass mountings. 38. IRAQ – Medal for Acts of Courage or Service in the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli War. Instituted in 1959. Silver and enamels. 39. USA – Lot to an unknown signals officer named ‘BROWN’: Army Commendation Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters; Good Conduct Medal with one knot silver clasp; Army officer’s hat badge; set of 7 ribbon bars including above awards (3 OLCs on ARCOM, 2 knots on Army GCM), National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal with OLC + 3 others; U.S. and Signals collar insignia, name tag “BROWN,” and Army Signal Corps distinctive insignia “Pro Patria Vigilanis.” 40. USA – Medal for Lifesaving on Railroads. Awarded to those who risk their lives in railroad accidents or disasters. This appears to be a 1988 strike of this rarely awarded Federal medal. Striking art nouveau design with unique suspension on correct ribbon. A very scarce medal missing from most U.S. medal collections. 42. SYRIA – Order of Bravery 1st Class. With gilt star device on ribbon. Instituted 1964. 43. GERMANY - Lot of 2: Franco-Prussian War Service Medal 1870-71, in bronze for combatants, with edge inscription indicating made from captured cannons; same medal, in steel for non-combatants. Original soiled ribbon on first, replaced ribbon on latter. 44. GREAT BRITAIN – Group of 4 to J.33035 A. E. Pearce, Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Reserve. 1914-15 Star (Boy 1, R.N.); (A.B., R.N.); WW1 Victory Medal (A.B., R.N.); Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service Medal, GV coinage head (J.33035 & PO B 16935, A.B., R.F.R.) 45. USA – Purple Heart (unnamed) in WW2 named case of issue with lapel button, plus original January 19, 1945 dated Western Union telegram to Mrs. Bernice R. Sego, 412 East 36th Street, Savannah, Georgia: “Regret to inform you your husband Staff Sergeant Leonard E. Sego was slightly injured in action Twenty Six December in Luxembourg. Mail address follows direct from hospital with details. Dunlop, Acting The Adjutant General.” Telegram had been folded and there is a tear along one fold and some minor edge tears. Medal and case in excellent condition. With some research indicating Sego enlisted 7 December 1943, was released from active duty 4 January 1946, and died in Florida in 1969. 46. USA – Lot of 2: WW 1 Victory Medal with clasps “Ypres-Lys”, “Meuse-Argonne” and “Defensive Sector” on original ribbon and brooch, plus a celluloid button with a color depiction of a warship under steam marked “U.S. CRUISER / NEW YORK”. 47. AUSTRIA – 1873 Campaign Medal, on original tri-fold ribbon. In addition to being awarded for a variety of pre-WW1 campaigns in Europe, this medal was authorized for Austrian participants in the 1900-1901 China Expedition against the Boxers. 48. SOVIET UNION – Lot of 2: Chernobyl Nuclear Clean Up Medal (Officially known as the “Badge for the Liquidation of the Consequences of the Chernobyl Catastrophe”, 1980s; Soviet Afghanistan War Veterans Medal 1979-89. 49. REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES – Yolo Campaign Medal. With pin-back brooch marked “El Oro” and contained within crushed box of issue. Includes ribbon bar and lapel pin. Awarded for various campaigns against the Yolo bandit leader Kamlon and his band between 1948 – 1955. 50. USA – Lot of 3 plus: Environmental Protection Agency Superior Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal in plush case with 3 lapel pins and ribbon bar; National Defense Service Medal, in box of issue dated 1992, plus 4 enameled DI insignia, pair of E-7 Sergeant First Class insignia, USAF ribbon bar with 3 full-size OLCs, and small “State of Texas” planchet (suspension missing). 51. COLUMBIA – Order of Merit General Jose Maria Cordoba, Commander grade. Bronze- gilt and enamels, with full neck cravat. 52. AFGHANISTAN - Medal "From the Grateful Afghan People". Brass & enamels. This medal was instituted by the Communist government of Afghanistan and produced at the Soviet mint. Issued to all Soviet servicemen in Afghanistan. 53. BULGARIA – Medal for the War of 1912-1913 (Balkan War). On original military, tri- fold ribbon. 54. SOVIET UNION – Medal for Combat Merit. An early example #’d 1150784. On original ribbon and brass suspension device. 55. USA – Lot of 2: Unofficial Medals supporting the relationship between United States – Great Britain. Both medals identical except for finish – gilt and silver. Obverse depicts American eagle and inscription “United We Stand.” Reverse shows Saint George slaying the dragon with inscription “Saint George for England.” Nice quality, appear to be WW2 era. 56. INDIA – Pannier Star named to “TJ1914 NSUB MANI RAM, ARTY.” On original ribbon. 57. ETHIOPIA – Earth Railway Medal. Vintage bronze planchet depicting portrait of King Menelik on obverse, reverse features a steam locomotive with surrounding legend in Amharic reading "Earth Train Commemorative", with date in exergue, and original ring attached to edge ball mount at top. Matte finish on incorrect red, white and blue multi- striped ribbon. Issued to commemorate the beginning of the French-built railway between Djibouti and Addis Ababa, which was finally completed in 1918. On incorrect red, white and blue multi-striped ribbon. 58. REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES – National Police Merit Medal. In partial crushed box of issue with ribbon bar. 59. USA – Purple Heart. Unnamed WW2 era award on slot brooch. With WW2 era ribbon bar. 60. SOVIET UNION – Order of Motherhood Glory, 3rd Class. Silver & enamels, #’d 996299. 61. USA – Military Order of the Carabao. Member’s medal on original ribbon with top bar. 62. USA – Navy Distinguished Civilian Award for Valor. With ribbon bar and lapel device. 63. USA – Navy Superior Civilian Award for Valor. With ribbon bar and lapel device. 64. AUSTRIA – 1873 Campaign Medal, on original tri-fold ribbon. GERMANY & ? – Lot of 2: Darmstadt Military Community award. Large white metal planchet with Darmstadt coat of arms on obverse, reverse engraved “19 DMT –MILCOM 88 / PRESEASON SB TNY / RUNNER-UP. On red, white and blue neck cravat; Early naval arm bullion arm badge of unknown origin, gold bullion on navy blue depicting crossed naval guns surmounted by a star and with letter “L” below. 70. ALBANIA – Commemorative Distinction for the Greek – Yugoslav Campaign, 1940- 1941. Attractive pin-back bronze & enamel badge depicting Italian fasces, saber, Albanian crown and inscription “SHOIPPIA USHTARVE NGLLNJYESA TE ROMES.” MAKER MARKED “S. JOHNSON, MILANO-ROMA.” 71. GREAT BRITAIN – Medal and Book: Royal Lifesaving Society Bronze Medal, awarded to (engraved) “J. L. Hasson, Sept. 1920”: Book – “Locations of British Cavalry, Infantry and Machine Gun Units, 1914-1924” by Robert W. Gould. Card covers, published 1977, 48pp. 79. USA – Secretary of Defense Civilian Medal of Valor. With ribbon bar and lapel device. This medal only awarded 3 times from 2001-2012. 80. USA – Lot of 4: Meritorious Service Medal; Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal, with ribbon bar and lapel pin; WW2 American Campaign Medal, with ribbon bar; WW2 Europe, Africa, Middle East Campaign Medal, with ribbon bar. 81. FINLAND – Home Front Commemorative Cross, 1939-1945. This award was for distinguished service on the Home Front during both the Winter War of November 1939 to March 1940 and again in the Continuation War from June 1941 to September 1944 when Soviet Russia attempted to re-annex Finland. 82. USA – Lot of 4: U.S. Coast Guard Commendation Medal on crimp brooch marked “LI-GI”; Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, crimp brooch; WW2 American Campaign Medal (planchet only); Vietnam Service Medal. 83. AFGHANISTAN – Military Long Service Medal. With blue enamel surrounding gold star on obverse for 15 years service. 84. USA – Colonial Order of the Crown Membership Medal. (Bishop & Elliott 1) An older bronze-gilt and enamel, uniface award. On original ribbon with safety-catch brooch. Founded in 1890, this society requires direct descent from the Emperor Charlemagne and currently has approximately 2,400 members. 85. USA – Lot of 5 +: U.S. Navy China Service Medal, crimp brooch; Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, crimp brooch; National Defense Service Medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal in Graco Industries box of issue dated 5/97; Disabled American Veterans of World War Delegate Badge – Ladies Auxiliary Department, Rhode Island Annual Convention 1938. Note with medal says it is related to WW1 veteran Frank A. Grabert; plus 2 ribbon bars. 86. USA – Purple Heart. World War 2 posthumous award with distinctive official hand engraving to “JAMES T. WARE.” On original ribbon with slot brooch. Research identified the recipient as a PFC with the 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division, U.S. Army. Ware was born 15 Dec 1925 at Abbeville, Georgia. He was killed in action on 30 January 1945 at Kesternich, Germany. Initially buried 3 Feb 1945 in the U.S. Military Cemetery at Margraten, Holland, he was disinterred at the request of his mother and returned to Abbeville, Georgia for reburial. The 311th Infantry Regiment had been attached to the 8th Armored Division in the Hurtgen Forest on 10 December 1944. On the 13th the regiment smashed into Simmerath, Witzerath, and Bickerath and was fighting for Kesternich when Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt launched his counteroffensive in the Monschau area on 18 December. The 78th Division held the area it had taken from the Siegfried Line against the violent German attacks throughout the winter. On the day that Ware was killed the Division attacked and took Kesternich. With copy Individual Deceased Personnel File. 87. GREAT BRITAIN – Case of issue for the Empress of India Medal by C. C. Adams, London. 88. GREAT BRITAIN – Case of issue for a K.C.V.O. (Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order) by Collingwood & Co., London. 89. GREAT BRITAIN – Case of issue for a C.M.G. (Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George). Unmarked satin interior appears to be a replacement. 90. GREAT BRITAIN – Case of issue for the Empress of India Medal by C. C. Adams, London. 91. SOVIET UNION – World War 2 Medal for the Defense of the Caucasus. On early brass suspension. 92. USA – Department of Defense Superior Service Medal. On original ribbon and crimp brooch. 93. NETHERLANDS – Cross for Justice and Freedom, with bar “KOREA 1950.” On distinctive Dutch ribbon mount by Konlink Luke Begeer, Voorkhoten. 94. IMPERIAL GERMANY – Baden: 1902 Jubilee Medal. Bronze medal for the 50th anniversary of the ascension of Grand Duke Friedrich I von Baden. 95. GREAT BRITAIN – Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, George V, 1st Type. Officially impressed to “K.22548 E. DONOVAN, STO. 1 H.M.S. TIGER.” H.M.S. Tiger was a battle cruiser launched in 1913. Participated in the Battle of Dogger Bank and the Battle of Jutland in 1916, where she was only lightly damaged despite suffering many hits by German shells. Apart from providing distant cover during the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1917, she spent the rest of the war on uneventful patrols in the North Sea. The ship was decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1932. 96. IMPERIAL GERMANY – Hannover. Campaign Medal for the Battle of Langensalza, 27 June 1866. Officially impressed to “J. VOLHERS III.” The Battle of Langensalza took place during the German war of 1866 when Hanover, along with Baden, Bavaria, Saxony and other states, fought with Austria against Prussia. The Hanoverian army achieved a rare defeat of Prussian forces but, unable to join with the Bavarian army to the south, were then surrounded by numerically superior Prussian forces and obliged to surrender. After the war, against the wishes of its people, the kingdom was annexed by Prussia and its king sent into exile. The medal is thus the last award issued by the kingdom. 97. GREAT BRITAIN – Imperial Service Medal, George V coinage head. Officially named to “ALFRED GARMONSWAY.” On original ribbon on pin brooch and in case of issue. With copy London Gazette notification from 14 December 1923 indicating that Garmonsway was a Sorter in the London Postal Service. 98. NETHERLANDS – New Guinea Commemoration Cross with bar “1962.” Awarded to military personnel who served in the conflict of New Guinea in the period 1961-1962. The medal was awarded to military personnel serving for at least 3 months in the confrontation with Indonesia. The clasp “1962” indicates that the recipient was involved in actual combat in 1962. On distinctive Dutch ribbon mount by v. Wielik in the Haag. 99. USA – Lifesaving Benevolent Association of New York Bronze (planchet only) engraved naming to “WILLIAM H. McKENNA” for saving human life in peril. Marked Tiffany & Co. 100. GREAT BRITAIN – Royal Lifesaving Society Reward of Merit. Silver medal on blue ribbon named to “S. T. SMITH – 1935.” In damaged box by J. A. Wylie & Co., London. 101. Book – “Hawaiian Royal Orders" by Gordon Medcalf. Privately published in 1962. 102. USA - Defense Intelligence Agency Civilian Combat Support Medal. 103. ALASKA – Lot of 2. Air National Guard Commendation Medal, silvered and enamel. National Guard Service Medal. 104.
