The medal offered here is one of those fi ve known. We believe there are now six known as per our Sale 105 (lot 3760) to Private W.D. Singleton No.2 Gun Detachment V.V.A.R. 24th May 1858, this not previously listed by Williams. Melbourne Volunteer Rifl e Regiment, the fi rst Victorian volunteer unit, was formed in 1854. The name was changed to Victoria Volunteer Rifl e Regiment shortly after and on 1 January 1856 it was renamed Victoria Volunteer Artillery Regiment. lot 4521 part (next page) 95 4523* 4521* Brassey Field Firing & Marching Competition Medal, Type Victoria Volunteer Long and Effi cient Service Medal, Type 2, 1898-1901. Won by 2nd Batt Inf. B'gde 24 May, 1899 1, 1881-1893. D.F. Falconer - 1881; Victorian Engineers on reverse, Pte. J. Nevin around edge. Engraved. Toned, Proficiency Badge in silver with black felt background very fi ne. (Grebert p178). The medal naming impressed with offi cial $750 correction to the year 1881. Nicely toned but uneven on reverse due to removal of double sided tape, otherwise nearly extremely fi ne. (2) $2,000 4524* Queensland Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, (Trophy 4522* of arms). Sub. Miners. Engraved but renamed. Scratches on obverse and uneven toning due to 4527* removal of double sided tape, otherwise very fi ne and rare. Natal Rebellion Medal 1906, - clasp 1906. Tpr. Some contact marks, very fi ne. $1,000 $1,000 The renaming of this medal may have been done offi cially because there would seem to be no reason to rename it to increase value as any named 319 Trp William Edgar Curgenven served in the Boer War with 5th Imperial medal is rare. Recorded under Commonwealth of Australia Long Service Contingent (South Australia). He also served in WWI with service number and Good Conduct Medals at CAG No.59 19/12/02 to 41 Spr. Joseph Perry, 5834. He enlisted at age 34 and stated his occupation as stockman, born at late Corps of Aust Engrs (N.S.W. Per. S.M.M.). Adelaide. On his medical record it shows that he had two bullet wounds in his leg. During his WWI service his record is appalling and on 11Dec1917 he was subject to Court Martial for impersonating a Coy Sgt Major - found guilty and sentenced to ten years penal servitude, later commuted to two years. He was discharged 20Mar1920. In accordance with a decision by the Standing Medals Board, he was issued no WWI service medals because of his unsatisfactory service. Toned, otherwise extremely fi ne. $400 49th Bn was in 13 Brigade, 3rd (Vic) Military District. 64th Bn from 3rd MD won the Commonwealth Gold Medal so members of K Coy 49th Bn, as runners up in the 3rd MD District Competition, were awarded the District Silver Medal. 4529 Commonwealth Military Competitions, Senior Cadets District Competitions 1911-12, silver medal inscribed to Cadet. A.H.Comgrave 80th Battn. Toned unevenly on obverse due to removal of double sided tape, otherwise extremely fi ne. $250 80th Bn was in 20 Brigade, 4th (SAust) Military District. 4530 Commonwealth Military Competitions, Senior Cadets Brigade Competitions 1911-12, silver medal inscribed to Cadet. F.Pierce 14th Battn. Toned with bright area on reverse from double sided tape, pin in suspension needs repair, otherwise extremely fi ne. $150 4533* 14th Bn was in 3 Brigade, 1st (Qld) Military District. Commonwealth Military Competitions, Senior Cadets Champion Team 1912-13, 18ct gold medal (approx 39g), inscribed to Cadet. E.P.Allen. "K" Coy 36th Battn 2nd Mil. Dist. Extremely fi ne and very scarce. $1,500 Competition held at Sydney, 6-7 June 1913. K Coy 36th Battn was the Newington College cadet unit. An account of the presentation of medals stated that a parade of four companies of cadets, inspected by Lieutenant- Colonel A. W. Wallack, C.B., District Commandant, took place on the Newington College grounds on Saturday afternoon 14 March 1914. The occasion was the presentation of gold medals, silver badges, and ribbons to the champion team in the Commonwealth series of military competitions. Companies from areas 34A (Enmore), 35A (Marrickville), 36A (Stanmore), and 36B (Petersham) took part in the parade, and as the young soldiers wheeled, formed, re-formed, and after a variety of evolutions fi nally marched, colours fl ying and bands playing, past the District Commandant and his staff, the spectacle was not lacking in impressiveness, though, except for the winning company, the marching occasionally would have been none the worse for a little more drill. Among those present were Lieutenant-Colonel Wallack, Lieutenant-Colonel Luscombe, A.A.G., Lieutenant Brown, A. and I. Staff, Colonel Cox, 8th Lancers, Colonel Pearce, A.F.A., Rev. C. J. Prescott, headmaster of Newington College, Captain Smith, brigade major of the 9th Brigade, Major Buchanan, CO. 36th Battalion, Major Reddish, CO. 35th Battalion, Captain Caunt. CO. 34th Battalion, and the offi cers commanding companies. E. Toogood 7 Bn. A.I.F. Impressed. Good very fi ne. $100 Edward Toogood, farm hand, age 20, born at Bairnsdale, Victoria; Enl.04Nov1914; Emb.02Feb1915; killed at Gallipoli 08May1915; witness at enquiry stated 'saw him killed at the latrines in White Valley, Anzac. He was hit in the head and died instantaneously.... buried nearby.' The Toogood family had a miserable war.
