Advisory Committee BMW Guggenheim Lab Opens in on Daniel Barenboim Elizabeth Diller December 9, 2012 Nicholas Humphrey Muchadeyi Ashton Masunda Enrique Peñalosa Juliet Schor Third Stop of Global Project Offers Free Programs throughout City That Rirkrit Tiravanija Explore Public Space and Urban Life Geetam Tiwari Wang Shi MUMBAI, December 6, 2012 – Opening in Mumbai from Sunday, December 9, 2012 through Sunday, January 20, 2013 and presented in collaboration with the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, the BMW Guggenheim Lab will offer free public programs and projects throughout the city under the theme ME=WE. On the third stop of this mobile initiative, the Mumbai Lab will address challenges and opportunities related to public space and the choices Mumbaikars make to balance individual (“me”) and community (“we”) interests.

Part urban think tank, community center, and public gathering space, the BMW Guggenheim Lab is a global project aimed at raising awareness of important urban challenges and inspiring an ongoing conversation in cities around the world. The six-week program at the Mumbai Lab’s central site on the rear plaza of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum will be presented from 3 to 9 pm, Thursday through Monday. Activities also will be offered on dedicated dates from 5 to 9 pm at additional Labs in five communities throughout the city:

Horniman Circle (Fort): December 13 to 17 Priyadarshini Park (Malabar Hill): December 20 to 23 Sambhaji Park (Mulund East): December 27 to 30 Batliboy Compound (Mill Worker Colony): January 3 to 7 Mahim Beach (Mahim): January 10 to 13

In addition to participating in free programs at the Lab sites, the public is invited

Solomon R. to visit the project website, join the dedicated online social communities, and Guggenheim Foundation subscribe to the Lab’s e-newsletter for the latest news. 345 Hudson Street, 12th floor New York, NY 10014 Phone +1 212 423 3500 bmwguggenheimlab.org

“The purpose of the BMW Guggenheim Lab is to explore urban life in the streets, and through the eyes of the people who live in cities,” said Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. “After launching the Lab in New York and taking it to , we are excited to bring this project to Mumbai, one of the most complex, populous, and culturally rich cities in the world.”

Mr. Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India said, “There is no better place to host the BMW Guggenheim Lab in Mumbai than the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum – and there is no better partner for this project than the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. We fully realize that the Lab, after New York and Berlin, has already come a long way to connect the people of the world to jointly take on the challenges that lie ahead for all of us in the megacities of today and tomorrow. With this realization comes the knowledge that the reason for the Lab’s success is each and every one who actively participates in this project, be it online or on site. In this regard, we are already convinced that Mumbai will once again prove to be a welcoming metropolis for new ideas and perpetual innovation.”

“We are pleased to collaborate with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the BMW Group to bring the BMW Guggenheim Lab Mumbai to the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum,” said Tasneem Mehta, Managing Trustee and Honorary Director, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum. “We hope that our series of interactive family programs and participatory activities will inspire Mumbai’s youth to consider the future of urban life and their role in shaping it.”

Mumbai Lab Programs The Mumbai Lab’s programs will include design projects, participatory studies, tours, talks, workshops, film screenings, and cultural activities. Creative and hands-on activities will bring the public together with design professionals, city officials, and urban planners to address issues related to transportation, housing, water, and governance. In addition, city tours will explore the psychological effects of public space. Design projects include an open competition to develop solutions for a heavily congested traffic junction in Mumbai and an exploration of ways to refit infrastructure with new public space and pedestrian functions. Please visit the Lab’s online calendar for more details on individual programs.

“Our hope for the programming of the BMW Guggenheim Lab Mumbai is to continue to expand participation beyond the traditional museum audience,” said Mumbai Lab Curator David van der Leer. “Everyone who lives in a city has a stake in its future, and our programs are designed to bring people of all backgrounds and viewpoints together to address important issues related to urban life.”

Mumbai Lab Team Programs have been developed by the Mumbai Lab Team (Aisha Dasgupta,

Solomon R. Neville Mars, Trupti Amritwar Vaitla, and Héctor Zamora), an international, Guggenheim Foundation multidisciplinary group of innovators and experts, in coordination with 345 Hudson Street, 12th floor Guggenheim curators David van der Leer and Stephanie Kwai, the Dr. Bhau Daji New York, NY 10014 Phone +1 212 423 3500 bmwguggenheimlab.org

Lad Museum team, and locally based program consultants Swati Abhijit, Sourav Biswas, Vikram Doctor, Naresh Fernandes, Aaron Pereira, Surabhi Sharma, and Pooja Warier.

Mumbai Lab Architecture As in New York and Berlin, the physical structure of the Mumbai Lab is in character with its urban environment. Tokyo architects Atelier Bow-Wow, working with Mumbai architect Samir D’Monte, have designed an L-shaped structure made primarily of bamboo that is uniquely suited to the plaza site at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and to the densely populated city, as well as a modified version of the Lab that will travel to the satellite sites throughout Mumbai.

Visitor Information All BMW Guggenheim Lab Mumbai programs are free and open to the public during operational hours. Most of the Lab’s programs and events will take place in English, and most will be accessible on a first-come, first-served basis; programs to be delivered in Hindi and Marathi will be noted on the Lab’s calendar, as will programs with limited space that require an RSVP.

About the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation Founded in 1937, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is dedicated to promoting the understanding and appreciation of art, primarily of the modern and contemporary periods, through exhibitions, education programs, research initiatives, and publications. The global network that began in the 1970s when the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, was joined by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, has expanded to include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (opened 1997), the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin (1997- 2013), and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi currently under development. Looking to the future, the Guggenheim Foundation continues to forge international collaborations that take contemporary art, architecture, and design beyond the walls of the museum. More information about the foundation can be found at guggenheim.org.

Pressemitteilung

Advisory Committee BMW Guggenheim Lab: Eröffnung in Mumbai Daniel Barenboim Elizabeth Diller am 9. Dezember 2012 Nicholas Humphrey Muchadeyi Ashton Masunda Enrique Peñalosa Juliet Schor Dritte Station des globalen Projekts bietet stadtweit kostenfreie Rirkrit Tiravanija Veranstaltungen zur Erforschung von öffentlichem Raum und dem Leben Geetam Tiwari Wang Shi in Großstädten.

MUMBAI, 6. Dezember 2012 – Vom 9.

Horniman Circle (Fort): 13.-17. Dezember Priyadarshini Park (Malabar Hill): 20.-23. Dezember

Solomon R. Sambhaji Park (Mulund East): 27.-30. Dezember Guggenheim Foundation Batliboy Compound (Mill Worker Colony): 3.-7. Januar 345 Hudson Street, 12th floor Mahim Beach (Mahim): 10.-13. Januar New York, NY 10014 Phone +1 212 423 3500 bmwguggenheimlab.org

Lab Structure As in New York and Berlin, the physical structure of the Mumbai Lab is in character with its urban environment. Tokyo architects Atelier Bow-Wow, assisted by Mumbai-based firm, SDM Architects led by Samir D’Monte, have designed a structure made primarily of bamboo. The L-shaped central Lab structure is uniquely suited to the site at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and to the densely populated city. In addition, a modified version of the central Lab, also made primarily of bamboo, will travel to satellite sites throughout Mumbai.

Program The BMW Guggenheim Lab Mumbai in collaboration with Overview the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum presents a broad range of free public programs and projects in the city of Mumbai under the theme ME=WE. Balancing individual (“me”) and community (“we”) interests, the ME=WE program is developed to offer new insights for Mumbai and, potentially, cities around the world.

Lab programs, initiated by the Mumbai Lab Team and developed by local consultants and Guggenheim curators, explore challenges and opportunities related to public space and the choices Mumbaikars make to balance individual and community needs in this bustling metropolitan area of more than 20 million people. The programs will be presented at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla for six continuous weeks, with additional activities at satellite locations throughout Mumbai.

Mumbai Programming Programs and events for the Lab are presented in six series— some highly professional, some highly entertaining:

 Meet in the Middle brings together public and private stakeholders, from grassroots thinkers to city officials. Conversations, panel discussions, and offsite visits will address and connect six themes: transportation, space, housing, environment, investment, and participatory urban planning.  Bridging encourages people with an interest in the same field, ranging from sports to cooking, from professional

Solomon R. experts to laypersons, to share knowledge and interact Guggenheim Foundation with each other through playful workshops and games. 345 Hudson Street, 12th floor  City Dreams, presented by the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum New York, NY 10014 Phone +1 212 423 3500 bmwguggenheimlab.org 4

and located at the museum and satellite locations, offers interactive family events on the historic development of the cultural landscape of Mumbai and creative hands-on activities reflecting the artistic vision of Mumbai’s youth and a future urban landscape.  Film Screenings offer classic and contemporary Bollywood favorites, documentaries, animation, and experimental works paired with related discussions about topics such as the search for individual space in an intense-urban environment.  Food for Thought uses food and drink as a catalyst for conversation about the cultures reflected on the tables and streets of Mumbai, addressing local and global issues of nutrition, food production, food security, and safety.  Unwrapping Mumbai offers new insights about how Mumbaikars adapt to their surroundings through high- energy, interactive variety shows and party sessions that combine talks, music, theater, storytelling, and tours to explore the city’s kaleidoscope of perspectives.

Projects The Lab has begun a series of participatory research studies and city design projects throughout the city of Mumbai to inform future urban designs in the city and elsewhere. They include the following, as well as others to be announced:

 Your Place, My Place, or Our Public Space? Privacy and Spaces in Mumbai (research project) asks Mumbaikars to contribute to an ongoing research project to reveal how the community perceives privacy. This study, which began during the summer of 2012, is conducted with Partners for Urban Knowledge, Action and Research (PUKAR), an independent Mumbai research collective.  Privacy and Spaces in Mumbai, a Visual Survey (research project) investigates, through participatory mapping and photography tours, where Mumbaikars find or create personal space. This project is conducted with the Design Cell at the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidji Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies (KRVIA).  Kala Nagar Traffic Junction Competition (design project), held in collaboration with the Mumbai Environmental Social Network (MESN) and administered by Lord Cultural Resources, asks students and professionals to re-imagine one of the city’s busiest transportation hubs.  Land Link (design project) explores ways to refit Mumbai’s

Solomon R. existing water pipe infrastructure as a new auto rickshaw Guggenheim Foundation highway and a pedestrian bridge between different 345 Hudson Street, 12th floor neighborhoods, creating a large public domain. New York, NY 10014 Phone +1 212 423 3500 bmwguggenheimlab.org 5

 Mumbai Stacked City (research project) introduces the Stacked Population Index (SPI) as an accurate depiction of Mumbai’s density, precisely where it occurs, and how it reflects living conditions.  Transformers invites the public to adorn the Lab on the rear plaza of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum each week using traditional and contemporary Indian artistry and craft.  Testing, Testing! Mumbai (research project), a series of tours developed by Colin Ellard of the University of Waterloo and also run at the New York and Berlin Labs, explores the psychological effects of urban spaces near the Lab on the rear plaza of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum.

About the BMW Guggenheim Lab

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and the BMW Group co-initiated the Advisory Committee Daniel Barenboim BMW Guggenheim Lab in October 2010. Through this project, the Guggenheim Elizabeth Diller and BMW are pioneering new approaches to the challenges faced by major cities Nicholas Humphrey around the world, collectively inspiring forward-looking concepts for urban life, Muchadeyi Ashton Masunda Enrique Peñalosa and broadening the dialogue about the future of cities. Juliet Schor Rirkrit Tiravanija Geetam Tiwari The collaboration with BMW enables the Guggenheim to advance its Wang Shi commitment to fostering creative thinking and promoting the understanding and appreciation of architecture, art, and other manifestations of visual culture. Through its on-site and online programming, the BMW Guggenheim Lab is empowering the public and thought leaders alike and engaging global audiences on a community level.

The collaboration with the Guggenheim is BMW’s largest and most ambitious cultural commitment, raising the company’s more than forty-year history of involvement with important cultural initiatives worldwide to a new level. In addition to providing the financial resources that make the project possible, BMW brings its tested expertise in global initiatives, outreach, and technology to the project, while safeguarding the Guggenheim’s curatorial freedom. It is BMW’s conviction that such freedom is as essential for groundbreaking artistic work as it is for major innovations in a successful business.

The BMW Guggenheim Lab is curated by David van der Leer and Maria Nicanor of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum along with Curatorial Assistants Amara Antilla and Stephanie Kwai. Activities at the Lab are reported on the project’s blog, Lab | Log, which also features interviews with BMW Guggenheim Lab contributors. The public is invited to join the BMW Guggenheim Lab’s dedicated social communities on Twitter (@BMWGuggLab and #BGLab), Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, and Foursquare).

BMW Group's commitment to culture.

Munich. For more than 40 years now, the BMW Group has initiated and engaged in over 100 cultural cooperations worldwide. The company places the main focus of its long-term commitment on modern and contemporary art, jazz and classical music as well as architecture and design. In 1972, three large-scale paintings were created by the artist Gerhard Richter specifically for the foyer of the BMW Group's Munich headquarters. Since then, artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Olafur Eliasson, Jeff Koons, Zubin Metha, Daniel Barenboim and Anna Netrebko have co-operated with BMW. The company has also commissioned famous architects such as Karl Schwanzer, Zaha Hadid and Coop Himmelb(l)au to design important corporate buildings and factory plants. In 2011, the BMW Guggenheim Lab, a global initiative of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Guggenheim Museum and the BMW Group celebrated its world premiere in New York. The BMW Group takes absolute creative freedom in all the cultural activities it is involved in for granted – as this is just as essential for groundbreaking artistic work as it is for major innovations in a successful business.
