Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 BuYun Chen All rights reserved ABSTRACT Dressing for the Times: Fashion in Tang Dynasty China (618-907) BuYun Chen During the Tang dynasty, an increased capacity for change created a new value system predicated on the accumulation of wealth and the obsolescence of things that is best understood as fashion. Increased wealth among Tang elites was paralleled by a greater investment in clothes, which imbued clothes with new meaning. Intellectuals, who viewed heightened commercial activity and social mobility as symptomatic of an unstable society, found such profound changes in the vestimentary landscape unsettling. For them, a range of troubling developments, including crisis in the central government, deep suspicion of the newly empowered military and professional class, and anxiety about waste and obsolescence were all subsumed under the trope of fashionable dressing. The clamor of these intellectuals about the widespread desire to be “current” reveals the significant space fashion inhabited in the empire – a space that was repeatedly gendered female. This dissertation considers fashion as a system of social practices that is governed by material relations – a system that is also embroiled in the politics of the gendered self and the body. I demonstrate that this notion of fashion is the best way to understand the process through which competition for status and self-identification among elites gradually broke away from the imperial court and its system of official ranks. -

The Tang dynasty is widely considered the most creative period in China’s history, having two poets compete for the title of best is an amazing feat. Both poets shared an unlikely friendship due to their exceptionally different writing styles and personal values, making their appeal to modern day poetry fanatics even more intense. Li Bai, with his romanticized poetry about wine and nature along with his obstinate behavior and carefree nature and Du Fu, with his realistic poetry about the struggles of life and man. -

By focusing on the history writing project commissioned by the Later Tang (923-936) court, it first aims at questioning how early-tenth-century contemporaries narrated some of the major events as they unfolded after the fall of the Tang (618-907). Second, it shows how both late- tenth-century historiographical agencies and eleventh-century historians perceived and enhanced these historical narratives. Through an analysis of selected cases the thesis attempts to show how, using the same source material, later historians enhanced early-tenth-century narratives in order to tell different stories. The five cases examined offer fertile ground for inquiry into how the different sources dealt with narratives on the rise and fall of the Shatuo Later Tang and Later Jin (936- 947). It will be argued that divergent narrative details are employed both to depict in different ways the characters involved and to establish hierarchies among the historical agents. A VIEW FROM THE OUTSIDE Luca Zan and Sara Bonini Baraldi * Abstract The paper investigates change processes regarding the managerial aspects of organizing Cultural Heritage activities in China. The focus is not on the historical and artistic meanings of archeological discoveries in themselves; nor on the technical, scientific, and methodological repercussions of conservation and restoration; nor finally on the evolution of museology per se. Rather, the core of the analysis is on new managerial problems along the “archaeological chain” (archeological discoveries, restoration, museum definition and public access to cultural heritage) posed by new professional discourse and the overall evolution of the economic and political context. The paper is based on field research carried out in Luoyang, Henan province. The micro view adopted (managing practices more than policies), and the unusual access to data (including financial figures on individual entities) represent a unique opportunity for a sort of “journey” inside the Chinese public sector. -

Quinn Steven Professor Mustafa Tuna April 28, 2017 SES 373 Recipes through the Dynasties: How Chinese Food and Food Culture Changed over Time For this proJect, I selected various Dynasties and time periods throughout Chinese history that represent the most significant changes to Chinese cuisine due to socioeconomic, political, industrial, or cultural impacts and globalization. I selected the Zhou Dynasty, the Mongol Empire, the Song Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty, the Ming Dynasty, the Qing Dynasty, and the Cultural Revolution because each has aspects that were completely uniQue during their time, but contributed to modern Chinese cuisine in a fundamental way. For each time period, I provided a brief introduction to the period, one or more recipes from that time period, and a brief narrative piece, or two in the case of the Song Dynasty, to give insight into how food may have appeared during that time period. Zhou Dynasty 1046 - 256 BC Period: The Zhou Dynasty, founded by the Ji family in 1046, was the era of bronze-making and also was the beginning of formal, ritualized dining in China with traditions, special cuisines and dishes, etiQuette, and hierarchy. In the kitchen, there was a hierarchy: the chief cook, the internal cooks, the external cooks, assistants, nutritionists, and wine officers, who altogether made up a cooking staff of more than 2,300 individuals. The chief cook was in charge of organizing the kitchen, food, and drinks for the Emperor, Empress, and crown prince, the internal cooks cooked their meals, and the assistants were responsible for food preparation, serving, and maintaining cooking fires. -

Vessels A coveries of the Belitung wreck are over thirty exquisitely manufactured gold and silver vessels. All of the seven gold vessels (nos 1–7), the gold leaf, These include one octagonal gold cup and three the gold bracelet (no. 9), and nine small silver boxes oblong, gold, drinking bowls (nos 1, 5–7), three (cf. nos 12–18) were discovered in 1998. Another gold dishes (nos 2–4), and two dozen richly deco- fourteen silver vessels, the gold bracelet fragments rated silver vessels. In addition, the divers recovered (no. 8 a, b), and additional silver vessel fragments eighteen silver ingots (cf. no. 11 a, b), over two kilo- were salvaged in 1999 from a small area at the stern grams of gold foil, a small gold coin (no. 10), a gold and slightly to port. Three large silver bowls with bracelet (no. 9), and several fragments of various foot rings (cf. nos 19, 20) were found stacked on gold and silver items. In quality as well as in size, top of a fine white ceramic bowl of similar size and this find figures among the most important discov- shape (no. 106). Next to these bowls, fragments of eries of Tang gold and silver made to date. Official Colours of Chinese Regimes: a Panchronic Philological Study with Historical Accounts of China
TRAMES, 2012, 16(66/61), 3, 237–285 OFFICIAL COLOURS OF CHINESE REGIMES: A PANCHRONIC PHILOLOGICAL STUDY WITH HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF CHINA Jingyi Gao Institute of the Estonian Language, University of Tartu, and Tallinn University Abstract. The paper reports a panchronic philological study on the official colours of Chinese regimes. The historical accounts of the Chinese regimes are introduced. The official colours are summarised with philological references of archaic texts. Remarkably, it has been suggested that the official colours of the most ancient regimes should be the three primitive colours: (1) white-yellow, (2) black-grue yellow, and (3) red-yellow, instead of the simple colours. There were inconsistent historical records on the official colours of the most ancient regimes because the composite colour categories had been split. It has solved the historical problem with the linguistic theory of composite colour categories. Besides, it is concluded how the official colours were determined: At first, the official colour might be naturally determined according to the substance of the ruling population. There might be three groups of people in the Far East. (1) The developed hunter gatherers with livestock preferred the white-yellow colour of milk. (2) The farmers preferred the red-yellow colour of sun and fire. (3) The herders preferred the black-grue-yellow colour of water bodies. Later, after the Han-Chinese consolidation, the official colour could be politically determined according to the main property of the five elements in Sino-metaphysics. The red colour has been predominate in China for many reasons. chen gui denis twitchett Chen gui and Other Works Attributed to Empress Wu Zetian ome quarter-century ago, studies by Antonino Forte and Richard S Guisso greatly advanced our understanding of the ways in which the empress Wu Zetian ࣳঞ֚ made deliberate and sophisticated use of Buddhist materials both before and after declaring herself ruler of a new Zhou ࡌʳdynasty in 690, in particular the text of Dayun jing Օႆᆖ in establishing her claim to be a legitimate sovereign.1 However, little attention has ever been given to the numerous political writings that had earlier been compiled in her name. These show that for some years before the demise of her husband emperor Gaozong in 683, she had been at considerable pains to establish her credentials as a potential ruler in more conventional terms, and had commissioned the writing of a large series of political writings designed to provide the ideologi- cal basis for both a new style of “Confucian” imperial rule and a new type of minister. All save two of these works were long ago lost in China, where none of her writings seems to have survived the Song, and most may not have survived the Tang. We are fortunate enough to possess that titled complete with its commentary, and also a fragmentary Chen gui copy of the work on music commissioned in her name, Yue shu yaolu ᑗ ᙕ,2 only thanks to their preservation in Japan.
