STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION of MALATE CATHOLIC CHURCH Ruel B STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION OF MALATE CATHOLIC CHURCH Ruel B. Ramirez, MSCE, M. ASEP Assistant Professor, College of Architecture University of the Philippines, Diliman I. Introduction ! Background The structure is Baroque-style built in the 16th century It is composed of thick masonry wall and huge buttresses It was damaged by war in 1762 It was hit and damaged by earthquake in 1863 It was damaged during the World War II ! Building Code Requirements To safeguard against major structural failures To safeguard life, not to limit damage or maintain function ! Heritage Structures NSCP does not cover analysis of heritage structures Analysis falls on to the Structural Engineers It is tested by time, thus, it is an actual laboratory testing II. Methodology ! Ocular Inspection To document the existing condition of the structure To assess the physical condition of the structure To assess the potential hazards (disintegrated masonry units) II. Methodology ! Conclusion and Recommendations ! The structure is sll safe under the design load considered in the analysis ! The lowest factor of safety is due to tension which implies that failure will be ini+ated by tensile cracks rather than crushing of the adobe blocks ! The wall and bu9resses can+levers from the foo+ng thus, no heavy loads such as mezzanine should concentrate in that region ! Exisng cracks in the wall and bu9resses should be repaired to integrate each masonry unit into the system .

Valentino Sitoy, Jr. United Church of Christ in the Philippines FOREWORD To capture in print a history of a people in their faith journey is itself a miracle! Indeed, it is the work of the Holy Spirit manifesting itself in the ingenuity and intellect of church scholars, such as this particular author. To be able to delve into the peculiarities of each of the uniting churches - each with its own particular historical journey - and weave them into one fabric of a United Church of Christ in the Philippines is indeed a work of genius. Leaping out of the pages are familiar names of persons, places and events as the stories of each of the denominational springs flow into the one stream of a church body, losing themselves into the one body. And as the names are read again and again, by individuals and groups of this volume, they will come to life and bring back memories of the many pioneers of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, without whom we will not be what we are today, nor hope to be what we ought to be, in the future.

  • The Pentecostal Legacy: a Personal Memoir1
[AJPS 8:2 (2005), pp. 289-310] THE PENTECOSTAL LEGACY: A PERSONAL MEMOIR1 Eli Javier 1. Introduction It has become evident that the task is rather formidable to bring a useful reflection on the history of a Pentecostal body in country in its more than half a century history. At the same time, I feel I have an edge in that the observations were made from the perspective of both an “insider and outsider.” There are personal anecdotes that can be corroborated by those who are still alive. These validate what has been written and experienced by others. Not all correspondence, minutes, and reflections that were published and presented in more formal settings are available to this writer at the moment. This is a handicap of sorts. However, this presentation should not be viewed as the end, but, rather the beginning of our continued pursuit of our “roots”. We owe it to the next generations, should Jesus tarry, to transmit to them our cherished legacy. More materials ought to be written and the “stories” and other oral recitals of how God brought us thus far “through many dangers, toils and snares.” This small contribution of this writer begins with a quick look at personal background to help the audience understand some dynamics of this presentation. 1.1 My Journey of Faith I grew up in a Methodist family and church. My maternal grandparents were among the first converts in our town of Taytay.2 My 1 An earlier version was presented at the Annual Lectureship of the Assemblies of God School of Ministry, Manila, Philippines in September, 2001.
