MESSAGE of Manila

I join the Parish of Our Lady of Remedies on the celebration of its annual fiesta. The pandemic and the lockdown do not prevent us from celebrating our faith and expressing our devotion to Our Blessed Lady. We may tone down our activities and even change some of our traditional celebrations, but we continue to foster and develop our filial devotion to the Blessed Virgin. All the more in this health and economic crisis we cling to Mama Mary. She is really Our Lady of Remedies. Her prayers will implore the Lord God to lead us to remedies in our sorry state.

As we cling to Mary, let us also reach out to her other children that are more in need. God will help not only those who help themselves but those who help others. Our readiness to share, even the little that we have, will make us ready to receive heavenly blessings. In the matter of giving and generosity, the ones who benefit are not only the receivers but most especially the givers. As the Scripture says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Happy fiesta to the parishioners of our Lady of Remedies!

God bless you all and more power to you!

+ Most Rev. Broderick S, Pabillo, DD Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila November 2020

MESSAGE Our Lady of Remedies Parish

In December 2019, the outbreak of Covid 19 virus was identified. Then the outbreak was declared a public health emergency and a pandemic. This coming November 15, which is our parish fiesta celebration of Our Lady of Remedies, also happens to be the ninth month since the lockdown was implemented in our country. What had been an activity-packed parish and the series of ten Sunday masses all came to a stop and to a quiet.

Indeed, no one can argue that the impact of the covid-19 pandemic has been extremely serious and life-threatening. The pandemic has claimed millions of lives and afflicted millions of people all throughout the world. The public health, livelihood, education and everything else is in a worsening and threatening condition. And it is impossible to say with any degree of certainty just how long this pandemic, that took the world by storm, will last.

Despite the crisis situation caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, we are celebrating our parish fiesta of Our Lady of Remedies. The pandemic may have locked us down and stopped us from doing what we used to do, it even stopped us from physically going to church, but it can never take away our faith. No pandemic can destroy our heritage of faith. And our faith is stronger than our fear. This is the faith that keeps us strong through tough times and will help us to survive.

Throughout the ages, Christians have turned to Mary in troubled times like war, famine and plague. Mary offers hope, healing and comfort to all who are in need of her maternal care. Our Lady of Remedies is a sure refuge, a source of comfort and hope. She is always ready to assist us, always there for us, constantly prepared to seek her Son’s guidance and support for all her children, especially in times of grave danger, such as the current pandemic.

Pope Francis entrusted to the Blessed Virgin Mary the suffering and anguish of millions of people affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Pope Francis prayed that Mary, the Health of the Sick who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, listens to our plea and to deliver us from every danger. Last May, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the (CBCP) consecrated the Philippines to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary amid the Covid-19

4 pandemic and dubbed it as “National to the Immaculate Mary: We pray as one. We heal as one. We renew the world as one”.

Our parish fiesta celebration this year amidst the pandemic is also to thank God with the intercession of Our Lady of Remedies, for the graces that we continue to receive. We thank God for keeping us safe through the support, expertise and sacrifices of the first responders, front-line health care workers and other frontliners and researchers. We thank God for providing our needs especially of our parish community during this time of devastation.

In the time of great need during the beginning of the lockdown and onwards, our parish has been generously assisted and supported by the remarkable organizations, particularly the Caritas Manila and its partner group of businesses and corporations, community groups, individual donors and the government to reach out in solidarity and support with the most vulnerable of our parish community.

The services of the parish in the midst of the pandemic, such as feeding, food and other relief goods distribution, have been facilitated by our ever enthusiastic, committed, self-sacrificing parish volunteers, particularly from our Area Council. The Parish Pastoral Council has been quite diligent and prudent in planning and implementing safe ways of doing the parish activities and services under this lockdown period. With the dedicated parish media group and the social comunication team and with new sets of equipment, the parish has also slowly developed its capacity for live streaming of our Masses and other parish virtual activities like this parish fiesta celebration.

In behalf of the parish, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for the generosity, commitment, and sacrifices of our parish volunteers and staff, the Columban missionaries in the parish and all the donors for the care and support of the parish especially during this time of pandemic.

A million thanks to Fr. Michael Martin, SSC for his 25 years of very engaging and endearingly warmhearted presence and his energetic and dedicated service to the parish. Fr. Mickey had left the parish to go back to Ireland for good. He still has good energy to do some ministry with the Columbans in Ireland and deserves to be closer to his family now and spend quality time with them. Thanks also to Fr. Rex Rocamora for his four years of dedicated ministry in the parish particularly accompanying the parish Basic Ecclesial Community. Thank you very much Fr. Michael Martin and Fr. Rex Rocamora for your love and dedicated service to the parish.

5

The pandemic will somehow reshape how we live, work and do our ministry in the parish. We just don’t know how that will look yet. But as the living God and Our Lady of Remedies continue to be with us, let us ask for help and trust God’s nourishing grace. Let us thank God who has done and will continue to do great things to us and to the whole of creation. Have a grace-filled Fiesta to all.

MESSAGE Parish Pastoral Council

A most happy fiesta to all!

With the theme, “Maria, tagapagbuklod ng mga pamayanang magkakaiba ng pinagmulan, kalinangan at paniniwala”, the feast of Our Lady of Remedies this year is unique and also the most challenging to prepare and plan for, as we had to modify our events and adjust to the call of the times to observe health protocols and social distancing guidelines. Instead of the usual Dalaw ni Maria to the community and institutions, it will be Dalaw kay Maria where the eleven barangays of the Parish will be given their day to visit Our Lady in . The traditional Harana kay Maria will be a virtual concert. The Marian Talk will be a webinar featuring two esteemed resource persons to talk about Mary as a Woman of Faith viewed from the Christian and Islamic Traditions. The procession of Our Lady will be carried out by a few vehicles on Fiesta Day. Still, the fervor is evident in the preparations for the Liturgy and all events. The priests from the Vicariate of Nuestra Señora de Guia who will preside in our Novena Masses have graciously accepted our invitation without hesitation. The Fiesta High Mass promises to be a meaningful celebration by no less than the Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila, His Excellency Bp. , and the Parangal kay Maria will be led by our very own Fr. Leo Distor.

In this year’s fiesta, however, we will miss the ever-lively energy and sunny presence of Fr. Michael Martin who has gone back to Ireland in August. We cannot express our gratitude enough for his 54 years of service in the Philippines, 25 of which had been in Malate. It was under his term as Parish Priest that the Remedios Jubilee Mission Center was constructed, and as he often told the story, that beautiful building reflected the cooperation, teamwork and unity in purpose of the Columban Priests Team of Malate Church. More than the physical structure, however, Fr. Martin has touched the lives of many, not only in the Malate community, but in his beloved Negros as well. We hope we will continue to honor his work by remembering the lessons and emulating the pastoral care he has shared with our parish.

We will also miss Fr. Rex Rocamora who left Malate for another assignment in the early part of the year. Fr. Rex has accompanied our Parish Basic Ecclesial Community for four years upon his return to Malate from his

7 missionary assignment in China. He has enriched us with his experience about other Eastern cultures and inspired people with his ideas. Fr. Rex graciously supported the Education Ministry by being a resource person for parish recollections and for sourcing good films for the Malate Classic Movies Night. More importantly, he has been a friend to the Parish community. For all these and more, we shall be always grateful.

I cannot end this message without acknowledging with thanks our committed parish volunteers who assisted our priests in the distribution of food donations in the community at the height of the lockdowns; those who selflessly joined the following teams – Marshalls, Sanitation, Registration Desk (Online and In-Church) – and the different units under the Worship Ministry, who have been serving since the Sunday Masses resumed. I would also like to mention our church volunteers in the vulnerable age groups (below 18 and above 60) who continue to express their commitment and support for the Parish in various ways, although physically constrained to remain in their homes. It is also worthy to commend all the Coordinators of the Ministries, the Area Council, and Organizations (the MAOs) who have been working with their members the past months. Especially, we thank our priests who have inspired us with their leadership and guidance during these challenging times.

We also remember our co-volunteers and members of the community who have passed on this year. While we may not have been physically present to pay our respects, we pray for them with gratitude and affection.

This year, we turn to Our Lady of Remedies for help, more earnestly than we used to, perhaps, because of the health and environment crises we are facing. Thus, we offer our Novena prayers for the end of the Covid-19 Pandemic, for peace in the world and health of the planet. But, more than ever, we are exceedingly grateful for all the blessings we have received from the bounty of the Lord thru Our Lady’s intercession. Just to be here celebrating Our Lady’s feast day and be able to give thanks is a precious Gift in itself!

Let us rejoice and be glad!

MESSAGE Fr. Michael Martin

Malateans, indeed all Filipinos, will soon be thanking God in a special way for the coming of Christianity five hundred years ago in 1521. The coming of the Good News in the joy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, was indeed a seed which fell on fertile ground. I include the prophetic voices and Church leaders, such as Tagle and Advincula and Pabillo – but I refer especially to the holiness of so many unsophisticated and poor people of simple faith who care and share the rice from CARITAS with other similar victims of a greedy world.

Mary’s willingness to accept God’s plan and her total trust in God revealed her faith. The coming of the statue of Our Lady of Remedies to Malate about a century later planted another seed which has gradually opened the door to a Christian vision of health, freedom, education and equality for Filipino women.

Malate Parish has sent and received men and women disciples of Jesus to live and share the Good News with those of little faith, or different faith, or without faith, and to inspire all those surviving on the margins of the world today. The Catholic Church’s theme for this year renews that call, and we Columban missionaries pray that God will continue to guide us and bless us with new future partners in that mission

Enjoy celebrating the Feast of Our Lady of Remedies on Nov 15. Thank you for uplifting and inspiring – and tolerating - me for the past 25 years, even if my last five months in Malate was lockdown, only able to go for a compulsory swab test before leaving. A similar lockdown continues here in Ireland, where I am blessed daily by my siblings, and of course you in Malate are very much in our prayers. Keep me in yours. I hope God’s plan and my health will include a visit to the post COVID 19 Philippines in the not-too-distant future.

Happy Fiesta, and thank you all.

HISTORY OF MALATE CHURCH

The story of Malate Church is a story of trials and triumphs, of war and peace, and of destruction and reconstruction. But it is also a story of Healing and Hope which describes the comfort that Mary, our Patroness, has brought to those who sought her intercession.

In 1588, Domingo de Salazar, the first bishop of Manila, established the parish of Maalat – later named Malate. The first pastors were Augustinian friars lead by Rev. Diego Vivar, the first Parish Priest. They endured a temporary structure for a few years until a sturdy, stone church and convent were built right here where Malate Church stands today.

In 1624, a small intricately carved statue of Our Lady of Remedies arrived in Manila from , and Malate Church became its home. This 500-year old title of Mary had its origins in the Southern European churches’ campaign to buy back those taken as slaves by North African Muslims. Our Lady of Remedies was already well-known in Spain and Mexicowhere, for many, slavery was a way of life, and its arrival added strength to the young Church of Manila.

The Augustinian friars administered Malate Church for almost 320 years. During this time, their adobe stone church survived a Chinese invasion in 1622 and a British occupation in 1762. In 1863, it suffered major damage from a very destructive earthquake, and it took the next 30 years to restore and enhance it to its present shape.

In 1898, Spanish friars were expelled as a result of the Philippine Revolution and the Augustinians left Malate. Secular clergy of Manila administered the Parish until 1912, when it was handed over to the Redemptorists. In 1929, the Redemptorists moved to Baclaran and the parish was entrusted to the Columban Fathers who had recently arrived from Ireland.

1945 marked the most painful year in Malate Church’s history. During the , thousands of parishioners, together with 5 Columban priests, were brutally massacred. The church was bombed and fire consumed everything. Only the damaged walls remained standing.

11

Among the items destroyed was the original precious statue of the Virgen de los Remedios. After the Second World War, the Columbans ordered the carving of a new wooden statue which is what you see today. It took a further 10 years to rebuild the church. A centennial tree stands proudly on the San Andres side of the grounds as a living memorial to the church’s over 400-year history.

It is not only the church structure that has undergone change through the years. The original Spanish novena to Our Lady of Remedies was translated into Tagalog in 1864, and into English 100 years later. In recent years, changes in the text of the Novena have incorporated both the life and times of Mary as recorded in the Holy Scriptures, as well as the fruits of recent Marian documents.

Down through the centuries, Malate Church has been associated with the healing of women’s afflictions and children’s ailments. Throughout the years, mothers have brought their children to the church to place them under the care and protection of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.

12

Amen.

How to be Church? By Fr Kurt Zion Pala

One of the many fond memories I hold dear is my time in Malate Church as a deacon and as priest. I worked mostly with the youth and also got involved with the Basic Ecclesial Communities and the Muslim community in the parish.

One Sunday evening, an altar server approached me after mass looking really concerned. He told me that a boy wanted to leave home. Then I saw a bag sitting in the guard house, and I got nervous thinking it must really be true. I knew who the kid was and so I asked for him. When I found him, his eyes were red from crying and so I asked him to see me in one of the counseling/confession rooms. He sat down and started to sob. His mother wanted him to stop going to church as an altar server.

He then said, "the church is home for me. My home is not home." The boy explained that the church is like a home for him, not like the house he lives in. He feels at home and is free to be himself in the church. I tried my best to calm him down and asked him to go back home. After a little more convincing, he told me he would go home. He is not alone. Many more young people like him are looking for a home. And they found it in the Church.

Most of the young people come from difficult family situations, and many of them consider Malate Church as their home. Young people struggle with alcohol and substance abuse, violence and broken families, poverty and lack of opportunities. There is so much hurt and pain in their stories. But there is hope. Knowing that the parish and the church is there for them, many of them come home to church to be nourished – to feel accepted and needed.

When young people consider the Church a home, I feel we have truly become the Church Jesus intended us to be — a home for everyone. To see them laugh and enjoy being who they are is really heart-warming and life-giving. When young people are alive, the Church is alive too.

Working with the youth in Malate and wherever I am sent has strengthened my conviction like Pope Francis who said in one of his interviews, "This

56 church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal church to a nest protecting our mediocrity."1

The church is a home particularly to vulnerable groups of people like the youth. Many of them are looking for attention and affection which is often lacking or missing in their family life. Most of them just want to be listened to and to feel they belong and are needed. The parish has been providing opportunities for them to take on responsibilities and to share their talents.

Young people are not problems to be solved, not mere objects of the church. They are the Church, too. And when young people consider the Church a home, I feel we have truly become the Church Jesus intended us to be – a home for everyone.

Home is a prominent theme in Pope Francis’ writings and speeches. In Laudato Si, he calls the Earth, our common home and invites everyone to hear the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. In his recent encyclical letter entitled Fratelli Tutti, he wrote that “…society benefits when each person and social group feels truly at home.” He uses this image to explain that in families, everyone contributes to the common purpose; everyone works for the common good, not denying each person’s individuality but encouraging and supporting it (230).

Fratelli Tutti is Pope Francis’ third encyclical letter signed last October 3. 2020. It is a social encyclical dedicated to fraternity and social friendship to encourage us to dream as a single human family and as fellow travelers sharing the same flesh. St Columbanalso said that“we too are pilgrims for Christ. Pope Francis is inviting as to change how we relate with others and with the Earth.

For Jesus, the home matters a lot. He did spoke in Synagogues and in the public but it was at home that he met family, friends and strangers and shared his time and presence with them more intimately. He spent a lot of

57 time at home even in strangers’ homes. One writer commented that Jesus used the home to build relationships and heal others, thus allowing Him to show the power and truth of his words and actions.

A comment from a young person that continues to stick with me is "God does not always give what we want but God always give what we need." And I believe the church is God's response to our need. The comment of the young boy who said, "Ang simbahan po para sa akin ay tahanan hindi tulad sa bahay" meaning, "The church is like a home for me not like the house I live in." This is a reminder to us to welcome every young person just like how Jesus welcomed every child who came to Him, a reminder for us to be a home to everyone. To be Church is to be a home for everyone.

Next year, the Philippines will celebrate the first baptism in the country, a celebration of 500 years of Christianity. The theme of the celebration, “Gifted to Give”, comes from the Gospel of Matthew (10:8). The faith we have today is a gift. We are grateful for the missionaries who brought Christ to our shores. Recognizing that gift, we are now called to bring that gift of Christ of others.

This year as part of the preparation is the Church in the Philippines is celebrating the Year of Ecumenism, Inter Religious Dialogue and Indigenous Peoples with the theme Dialogue towards Harmony. In Chapter 6 Dialogue and Friendship in Society of Fratelli Tutti, Pope Francis turns to dialogue and its important role in creating a new culture of fraternity. In that chapter, he encouraged the concept of life as the “art of encounter: with everyone even with the world’s peripheries with the original peoples because “each of us can learn something from others. No one is useless and no one is expandable (215). As Columban missionaries we have learned the truth of St Columban’s words: “A life unlike your own can be your teacher.”

How can we be Church at this time of the pandemic? During dark times there are bright places. We can be that bright places for others. But what can I do? The world is so big and I am so little. What can I give to the world? Again Pope Francis encourages each of us, “Never think that you have nothing to offer, or that nobody

58 needs you. Many people need you. Think about it! Each of you, think in your heart: many people need me”

Go out to the World, be brave, be generous but most of all be joyful! I am not a fan of statement shirt but I have a favorite one because it is the only one I have. On the shirt is written, “Do something nice.” And it never fails to put a smile to the person who really reads it. Do something nice. Just do it!

I am a now living and working in a parish in the Diocese of Myitkyina somewhere in the north of Myanmar close to China. I still work a lot with young people and with people of different cultures and faith traditions. Thank you Malate for teaching me how to be a Church!

If you are interested to become a Columban Missionary, to join in the adventure of “Sharing Gospel Joy” to the ends of the world and write to me ([email protected]). Please do not forget to pray for and support us Columban Missionaries.

Our Lady of Remedies, pray for us. St. Columban, pray for us.
