TOURNAMENT TALKING POINTS  No.1 seed is playing her first tournament since a surprise second-round exit at Wimbledon. The draw paired here has her with a qualifier in the first round before a potential meeting with either Zheng Saisai or wildcard Katie Swan  Sloane Stephens is No.2 seed and one of three former champions in the draw. Last year, she began a summer hard court season that ended with US Open glory with a first-round defeat here in the nation’s capital  The No.3 seed is Naomi Osaka, one of 15 main draw debutantes this year, who begins her challenge against Bernarda Pera, while No.4 seed and defending champion Ekaterina Makarova faces Ana Bogdan first up  In addition to her win last year, Makarova is also a three-time semifinalist – she has more wins (14) than any other player in the tournament’s history  One to Watch – Ninteen-year-old Caroline Dolehide has made steady progress this year and impressed during a run to the third round at Indian Wells this spring. Now on the cusp of the Top 100, she is playing her first WTA main draw as a direct entrant and faces the in-form Donna Vekic in the first round
