Box 102, Budapest, 1525 Hungary Environ.Entomol.20(5): 1301-1308 (1991) ABSTRACT Larvae, pupae, and adults of ladybird beetles were observed in an insecticide- free and an insecticide-treated block in an apple orchard near Budapest, Hungary during 1980-1982. Speciesnumbers and densities in all developmental stageswere higher and species turnover was lower in the insecticide-free block. Diversity and similarity indices showed more diverse and constant assemblages in the insecticide-free block. The adult assemblage was the most rich in species, with 19 species in the insecticide-free and 12 species in the treated block. The most common species overall were Coccinella septempunctata, Adonia variegata, Adalia bipunctata, and Exochomus quadripustulatus. The larval assemblage included nine and eight species for the untreated and treated blocks respectively, whereas the pupal assemblage had eight species in both blocks. Immature stages of II species were found in at least 1 yr and 10 of these was able to complete development in the orchard. The rate of successwas higher in the insecticide-free block for most species. Only A. btpunctata reproduced successfully in both blocks in all three years but A. decempunctata and C. septempunctata were often successful. The specimens collected were counted and identified and the sampling pro- tocol was established by using the accumulation curves and the seasonal richness peaks of the most abundant groups of natural enemies. A total of 1856 and 1301 arthropods were captured, respectively, in 2007 and 2008, where Araneae, Coccinellidae and Formicidae were the most abundant groups. A total of 14 families and 29 species of spiders were identified as Linyphiidae, Philodromidae, Thomisidae, Araneidae and Oxyopidae, the five most abundant families in both years.

Stethorus gilvifrons Mulsant (21.1%) was the most abundant coccinellid, followed by Adalia bipunctata L. (14%), Coccinella septempunctata L. (8.8%), and Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata L. (8.8%) in rank order of abundance in apple orchards. The harlequin ladybird is a global invader that causes the decline of native ladybirds in some countries. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor the ladybird fauna in regions recently occupied by this species. We analyzed the dynamics of the fauna at the main sea resort of Russia over a period of 120 years to determine the following: (1) how the ladybird biodiversity changed during the intensive landscape transformation; (2) what alien species introduced for pest control have occurred to date; and (3) what the impact is of the harlequin ladybird on the ladybird fauna. We examined specimens collected by us and 54 other collectors including specimens from old museum collections and reconstructed the history of the biodiversity like a picture from puzzle pieces. Surprisingly, landscape transformation did not cause a decrease but rather an increase in ladybird biodiversity; most of the species recorded before 1930 have occurred to date, and 23 other species have spread to the region.

Specimens of coccinellid beetles were collected by netting and hand picking from Shorab, Veisian, Sarabdore, Teshkan and Kashkan. Identification of these beetles showed twenty-two different species. Oenopia conglobata (Linnaeus, 1758) (n = 386, 24%) was recorded as the most abundant species as well as widely distributed on all over the regions. When distributions of all the areas were compared, it was concluded that Coccinellidae was mostly distributed in the Shorab area. The maximum and minimum species diversity indices were obtained in Shorab (Simpson’s diversity index = 0.90) and Kashkan (Simpson’s diversity index = 0.67) regions, respectively. Maximum similarity index (0.89) was observed between Sarabdore and Kashkan regions. KEY WORDS Ladybirds; biodiversity; Coleoptera; Iran. Nicoli”, Crevalcore, Bologna, Italy 3Laboratory of Entomology, Wageningen University, The Netherlands Abstract The insect predator complex in weedy margins adjacent to crops was studied in order to understand the ecological role of non- crop habitats on polyphagous predators in a northern Italian rural landscape. Weedy field margins at ten sites, in Bologna prov- ince, of different age and maturity which were adjacent to hedgerows, were sampled with a sweep net. Coleoptera (Coccinellidae) and Rhynchota (Nabidae) were the most abundant groups sampled in these weedy margins. Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) was the most abundant coccinellid species, followed by Coccinella septempunctata L. and Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.). Among the tribe of Scymnini, Scymnus rubromaculatus (Goeze) and S. apetzi Mulsant were the most abundant species. A con- sistent population of Anthocoris sp. was recorded at one site only, and these Anthocorids probably originated from the adjacent pear orchard. The age and maturity of the hedgerows appear to influence the abundance and distribution of predator families in the adjacent weedy margins. Nabidae were the most abundant insects within margins adjacent to old hedgerows. These old hedge- rows showed generally a more uniform distribution of relative predator abundance than younger hedgerows. The margins adjacent to young hedgerows were characterised by a strong predominance of Coccinellidae.
