Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits. -

Having spent many happy hours with the lamented author in the examination of the beautiful forms of which this book treats, I have felt it a pleasant thing to be associated, even in so humble a capacity, with its introduction to the Entomological world ; and the little service I have had the privilege of rendering in the revision of the proof-sheets of the latter half of the work, has been quite a labour of love enabling me to offer a slight testimony of affection to a kind friend, and of my personal interest in that family of the Coleoptera which had first attracted my attention by the singular loveliness of its numerous species. A careful revision by the author himself would have been of incalculable value to the work ; its usefulness would also have been greatly enhanced, had it been possible for him to have made those modifications and additions which his investigations in America afforded materials for. But, of course, this was not possible. There is, however, the conso- lation of knowing that the student can obtain the results of those later researches, in the author's memoir, entitled " Revision of the Coccinellidse of the United States," to which Mr Janson refers in the note which follows this preface. This information is not only important for conservation efforts, but also has important implications for sustainable agricultural practices. Associated biodiversity can provide ecosystem services like pollination and pest control, but because organisms may respond differently to the unique environmental filters of specific urban landscapes, it is valuable to compare regions that have different abiotic conditions and urbanization histories. In this study, we compared the abundance and diversity of ladybird beetles within urban gardens in California and Michigan, USA. We asked what species are shared, and what species are unique to urban regions. Moreover, we asked how beetle diversity is influenced by the amount and rate of urbanization surrounding sampled urban gardens. We found that the abundance and diversity of beetles, particularly of unique species, respond in opposite directions to urbanization: ladybirds increased with urbanization in California, but decreased with urbanization in Michigan. -

The species recorded belong to three genera (Paracoelopterus, Serangium and Pharoscymnus) out of three tribes (Microweiseini, Serangiini and Sticholotidini). The largest and least numbers of species were found in the genera Pharoscymnus and Serangium, respectively. Among the species, Pharoscymnus ovoideus and Serangium montazerii were the most frequently recorded. Among provinces, Fars province had most records. Zusammenfassung: Eine Checkliste über neun Arten von Marien- käfern der Unterfamilie Sticholotinae (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) im Iran basierend auf Literaturstudien und Feldarbeit wird vorgelegt. Die Arten gehören zu drei Gattungen (Paracoelopterus, Serangium und Pharo- scymnus) aus drei Triben (Microweiseini, Serangiini und Sticholotidini). Am artenreichste Gattung ist Pharoscymnus und die artenärmste Serangium. Am häufigsten wurden die Arten Pharoscymnus ovoideus und Serangium montazerii gesammelt. In the last newsletter we detailed a number of new County Recorders and within this edition are some of the fruits of their labours from 2013, which I feel are particularly valuable. Edition 9 will be due at the beginning of October with the cut off date for contributions being Friday 19th September. Hopefully the summer will bring plenty of entomological experiences that can be shared amongst Shropshire’s entomologists whether they are accounts of new species or just interesting sightings, all are welcomed. Carriere and Carolina hemlock Tsuga caroliniana Englem. in the eastern United States. A newly reported beetle predator for HWA, Scymnus (Pullus) coniferarum Crotch (Coleoptera: Cocinellidae) preys on the pest in the western United States, and was approved for release in the eastern United States for the control of HWA. This research investigated the viability of S. coniferarum as a biological control agent of A. tsugae in the eastern United States, as well as the ecological dynamics between S. coniferarum and host prey species in its native range of western North America. In objective one, S. coniferarum predation, reproductive potential, and survival were evaluated in field-cages on adelgid infested T. canadensis in southwestern Virginia. Adult S. coniferarum fed on both generations and all life stages of A. tsugae at rates comparable to other adelgid-specific predators, and survived for extended periods of time in the field. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We surveyed and identified species of lady beetles from the West Bank to document their geographic distribution and understand their ecological significance. This study documents the presence of 35 species of Coccinellidae in 19 genera belonging to 10 tribes and 6 subfamilies. Seven species (mostly very rare), out of the 35 documented, are recorded for the first time in the area studied. These are Nephus (Bipunctatus) bipunctatus, N. crucifer, Scymnus (Scymnus) interruptus, S. (Parapullus) abietis, S. (Neopullus) limbatus, S. nigropictus, and S. (Pullus) suturalis. Nephus peyerimhoffi, introduced to Palestine in 1986 and later considered extirpated, is recorded from three localities in this study. The distribution of many species generally correlates with local biogeographical zones. All species recorded during the study feed on agricultural pests such as aphids and scale insects.
