Prof. Dr. Barış Parkan January 2020, 123 pages The aim of this study is to discuss the connection between Alevism and Humanism with a detailed examination. The main question of the thesis is whether Alevism can be linked to Humanism or not. The concepts of humanism in the history of Alevism are analyzed in terms of human-centrism, mind, and the love of humanity, tolerance, respect and morality. Alevism, which is largely influenced by Haji Bektash Veli‘s teachings, could open a door for Humanism and for the strength of this connection with Alevism; this door is examined and questioned. While Haji Bektashi Veli and his orders seem compatible with a human-centered philosophy not only for his century but also for today; it has some problematic aspects as well. And this thesis is written to reveal both the reasonable and problematic sides of the link between Alevism and Humanism. By the evaluation of different views, the similarities and differences between Alevism and Humanism are shown. • The Differences Between Sunni and Shia Muslims the Words Sunni and Shia Appear Regularly in Stories About the Muslim World but Few People Know What They Really Mean
Name_____________________________ Period_______ Date___________ The Differences Between Sunni and Shia Muslims The words Sunni and Shia appear regularly in stories about the Muslim world but few people know what they really mean. Religion is important in Muslim countries and understanding Sunni and Shia beliefs is important in understanding the modern Muslim world. The beginnings The division between the Sunnis and the Shia is the largest and oldest in the history of Islam. To under- stand it, it is good to know a little bit about the political legacy of the Prophet Muhammad. When the Prophet died in the early 7th Century he not only left the religion of Islam but also an Islamic State in the Arabian Peninsula with around one hundred thousand Muslim inhabitants. It was the ques- tion of who should succeed the Prophet and lead the new Islamic state that created the divide. One group of Muslims (the larger group) elected Abu Bakr, a close companion of the Prophet as the next caliph (leader) of the Muslims and he was then appointed. However, a smaller group believed that the Prophet's son-in-law, Ali, should become the caliph. Muslims who believe that Abu Bakr should be the next leader have come to be known as Sunni. Muslims who believe Ali should have been the next leader are now known as Shia. The use of the word successor should not be confused to mean that that those that followed the Prophet Muhammad were also prophets - both Shia and Sunni agree that Muhammad was the final prophet. How do Sunni and Shia differ on beliefs? Initially, the difference between Sunni and Shia was merely a difference concerning who should lead the Muslim community.

  • The Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion: Two Case Studies
THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS by Hüsamettin ŞİMŞİR Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Sabancı University June 2018 © Hüsamettin Şimşir 2018 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT THE ARSENITE SCHISM AND THE BABAI REBELLION: TWO CASE STUDIES IN CENTER-PERIPHERY RELATIONS Hüsamettin Şimşir M.A Thesis, June 2018 Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Fac. Member Ferenc Péter Csirkés This thesis aims to present an analysis of the interaction between Christians and Muslims in the west of Asia Minor at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th centuries after two religious-social movements in the Byzantine and the Rum Seljuk Empires, the Arsenite Schism and the Babai Rebellion. After the unsuccessful rebellion of the Babais, antinomian dervishes who had migrated to the west of Asia Minor because of a heavy oppression as well as inquisition by the state and had a different religious belief apart from the mainstream religious understanding of the center initiated missionary activities in the regions along the Byzantine border. Accordingly, these dervishes had joined the military activities of the Turcoman chieftains against the Byzantines and interacted with the local Christian population and religious figures. As a result of this religious interaction, messianic and ascetic beliefs were increasingly present among the Greek-speaking population as well as spiritual leaders of western Anatolia. Since such interfaith and cross- cultural interaction had a considerable impact on the course of all these events, this thesis focuses on them to create a better understanding of the appearance of the Hesychasm in the Byzantine spiritual environment in the later period.

They have shown that humans will always be interested in dimension of faith, belief, and religion, and established that there is a crucial relationship between the holistic signification and the social institution. At the same time, they have laid out the various reasons why the religion is important for people, such as the way it enables a form of social solidarity among people to add meanings to human life and uncertainty (suffering, death, secret, and illness). For all human progress, the embodiments of religion and faith and the process of discovery are related to collective cultural structuring, social representation, and cultural function.(1) The purpose of anthropology is to investigate people, social relations, and social structure, so faith is one of the most fascinating subjects for anthropologists. Atay mentions that religious anthropology explores religiosity, religious motives and practices that have been formed to represent the way of life and culture rather than their religious contents and sacred/divine sources.(2) Therefore anthropologists have researched the dialectic relationship This is a revised edition of the paper presented as “Ocak in the Globalizing Alevism: An Anthropological Analysis on Dedelik-Seyitlik,” at the 1st International Symposium of Alevism from Past to Present, Bingöl University,Turkey, October 3-5, 2013.
