"I'm very excited that keyboards are finally a part of Rock Band. It's about time you guys got hip to the necessity of keys in rock," said Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for The Doors. "This is going to be great for all the gamers, because it's a lot more difficult. Rock Band 3 will require some brainwork, so . 'Break On Through!' The free downloads, 'Light My Fire,' 'Riders On the Storm' and 'Touch Me,' are all great keyboard songs. And look out for The Doors' lost masterpiece, Live in Vancouver, when it comes out Nov. 22!" On Oct. 26, twelve of The Doors' most-loved songs, including three tracks with the Pro Guitar and Pro Bass feature, will be added to the Rock Band 3 Music Store of downloadable content for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 system and Wii. It was previously announced that The Doors' quintessential song, "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" is featured in the on-disc soundtrack of Rock Band 3 and is also the soundtrack for the game's opening cinematic clip. A three-pack of songs that feature Pro Guitar and Pro Bass upgrade downloads will be available for free to fans that purchase Rock Band 3 and play online during the first week the game is available (Oct. 26 - Nov. 1). The free pack, which is available only through the Rock Band 3 in-game Music Store, includes "Light My Fire," "Riders on the Storm" and "Touch Me," which incorporate five-button guitar and bass, Drums, Pro Drums and Keys, Pro Keys and harmonies, where applicable, as well as a free expansion that will add Pro Guitar and Pro Bass parts. Additionally, a nine-pack of songs from The Doors will also be available for download that week. This includes some of the classic rockers' most-loved songs, like "Hello, I Love You," "L.A. Woman," "Love Her Madly" and "Roadhouse Blues," all featuring Drums, Pro Drums, five-button guitar and bass parts and, where applicable, harmonies and Keys/Pro Keys parts. With their hypnotic blend of Ray Manzarek’s eerie organ, Robby Krieger’s flamenco-flecked guitar runs, and John Densmore’s cool jazz-driven drumming, the band were among the foremost pioneers of California psychedelia. Jim Morrison’s brooding, haunting vocals injected a new strand of literate poetry into rock music, exploring both the majestic highs and the darkest corners of the human experience. The Byrds, Bob Dylan, and other folk-rockers were already bringing more sophisticated lyrics into rock when the Doors formed in Los Angeles in the summer of 1965. Unlike those slightly earlier innovators, however, the Doors were not electrified folkies. Indeed, their backgrounds were so diverse, it’s a miracle they came together in the first place. Chicago native Manzarek, already in his late 20s, was schooled in jazz and blues. Native Angelenos Krieger and Densmore, barely in their 20s, when the band started to generate a local following, had more open ears to jazz and blues than most fledgling rock musicians. The charismatic Morrison, who’d met Manzarek when the pair were studying film at the University of California at Los Angeles, had no professional musical experience. He had a frighteningly resonant voice, however, and his voracious reading of beat literature informed the poetry he’d soon put to music.

Whispered rumors, legends and contrary accounts go hand in hand with iconic rock bands, and Santa Barbarans aren't immune to the mystique of The Doors. But though recirculated stories often stretch the bounds of credibility, the Los Angeles band does have some curious connections to Santa Barbara County. When The Doors receive a lifetime achievement Grammy Award tonight, some locals can even claim they knew the boys back in the beginning. In tribute to the band's 40th anniversary, being celebrated this year, we collected local trivia related to the group. Maybe you'll find yourself a few degrees from The Doors. • Before becoming The Doors' ace guitarist, Robby Krieger (then Robert Alan Krieger) was a student at UCSB, where he studied psychology from 1964 to 1965. He taught flamenco guitar to kids and practiced his grooves in the laundry room of his dorm. "It was a total party school," Mr. Krieger recalled in "The Doors by The Doors" (Hyperion, 2006). This is quite a feat for a video game, and begs that we consider the reasons for the game’s success as well a the potential social consequences of this game as well as similar popular games. There are two major elements at work in the creation of Beatles Rock Band as a successful brand, and this paper conducts qualitative, participant-observation research in order to provide an analysis of the game that identifies both of them. First, the paper explores the Beatles as a brand that continues to provide emotional and spiritual value for consumers, and how the feelings associated with this brand have developed intertextually since the band first gained international popularity in 1962. Second, this paper will show how Beatles Rock Band can be viewed as a documentary game, and how, in portraying history, it also rewrites it in order to capitalize on a romanticized ideal of 1960s culture. This paper will show the ways that Beatles Rock Band draws on previous commercial texts associated with the Beatles brand to create a hyperreal fiction based on historic people and events. These texts help to connect people in fan communities that serve the commercial purposes of the game marketers.

By Zoë Madonna GLOBE STAFF FEBRUARY 24, 2017 CAMBRIDGE — You may not know Eran Egozy’s name, but if you either were between the ages of 10 and 24 in the mid-2000s or had children in that ballpark, you may be familiar with one of the wildly successful video games on his resumé. Harmonix Music Systems, the video game development company he founded with fellow Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate Alex Rigopulos, brought the “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” franchises to living rooms and dorm lounges everywhere, introducing immersive, interactive technology through which non-musicians could play music. Now Egozy is turning his attention from the video game console to the concert hall with the app NoteStream. The app offers an alternative to the traditional program book, which delivers listeners a static wall of text that may be difficult to take in before the lights go down. NoteStream is designed to run on smartphones, displaying images and insights about a piece in real time as it is performed. “Our purpose is to engage with the audience more,” Egozy said at MIT, where he teaches. “We want people who are listening to music, especially if they’re listening for the first time, to be able to appreciate more of it as they’re listening to it.” NoteStream’s prototype outing was during an MIT Wind Ensemble performance of Percy Grainger’s English folk tune-inspired “A Lincolnshire Posy” in December.
