“The Doors”—The Doors (1967) Added to the National Registry: 2014 Essay by Richie Unterberger (guest post)* Original album cover Original label The Doors One of the most explosive debut albums in history, “The Doors” boasted an unprecedented fusion of rock with blues, jazz, and classical music. With their hypnotic blend of Ray Manzarek’s eerie organ, Robby Krieger’s flamenco-flecked guitar runs, and John Densmore’s cool jazz-driven drumming, the band were among the foremost pioneers of California psychedelia. Jim Morrison’s brooding, haunting vocals injected a new strand of literate poetry into rock music, exploring both the majestic highs and the darkest corners of the human experience. The Byrds, Bob Dylan, and other folk-rockers were already bringing more sophisticated lyrics into rock when the Doors formed in Los Angeles in the summer of 1965. Unlike those slightly earlier innovators, however, the Doors were not electrified folkies. Indeed, their backgrounds were so diverse, it’s a miracle they came together in the first place. Chicago native Manzarek, already in his late 20s, was schooled in jazz and blues. Native Angelenos Krieger and Densmore, barely in their 20s, when the band started to generate a local following, had more open ears to jazz and blues than most fledgling rock musicians. The charismatic Morrison, who’d met Manzarek when the pair were studying film at the University of California at Los Angeles, had no professional musical experience. He had a frighteningly resonant voice, however, and his voracious reading of beat literature informed the poetry he’d soon put to music.

  • THE LORE of the DOORS: Celebrating Santa Barbara Connections As Legendary Rockers Mark Milestone
Newspress.com http://www.newspress.com/Top/Article/printArticle.jsp?ID... THE LORE OF THE DOORS: Celebrating Santa Barbara connections as legendary rockers mark milestone KARNA HUGHES, NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER February 11, 2007 8:18 AM Some say The Doors' late singer Jim Morrison wrote "The Crystal Ship" when he was dropping acid on an Isla Vista beach one night, transfixed by the glittering lights of Platform Holly, an offshore oil rig. Whispered rumors, legends and contrary accounts go hand in hand with iconic rock bands, and Santa Barbarans aren't immune to the mystique of The Doors. But though recirculated stories often stretch the bounds of credibility, the Los Angeles band does have some curious connections to Santa Barbara County. When The Doors receive a lifetime achievement Grammy Award tonight, some locals can even claim they knew the boys back in the beginning. In tribute to the band's 40th anniversary, being celebrated this year, we collected local trivia related to the group. Maybe you'll find yourself a few degrees from The Doors. • Before becoming The Doors' ace guitarist, Robby Krieger (then Robert Alan Krieger) was a student at UCSB, where he studied psychology from 1964 to 1965. He taught flamenco guitar to kids and practiced his grooves in the laundry room of his dorm. "It was a total party school," Mr. Krieger recalled in "The Doors by The Doors" (Hyperion, 2006). "There was a band of hippies at UCSB. Longhairs few and far between at that point. We were doing acid and stuff, but there weren't a lot (of) us, maybe twenty people that were hip, you know." 1 of 6 02/13/2007 1:34 PM Newspress.com http://www.newspress.com/Top/Article/printArticle.jsp?ID..

Strange Days: The American Media Debates The Doors, 1966-1971 Maximillian F. Grascher 2 Introduction Throughout the course of American history, there have been several prominent social and political revolutions carried out by citizens dissatisfied with the existing American institutions run by the government and its civil servants. Of these revolutions, Vietnam War and civil rights protest among youth in the 1960s was of the most influential, shaping American society in the decades to come. With US involvement in Vietnam escalating and the call for African-American civil rights becoming more insistent by the year, thousands of America’s youth took to the streets to protest the country’s foreign and domestic policies and to challenge the US government, much to the anger of America’s older generations. Artists played a critical role in the unrest, including musicians who encouraged a reformation of American society’s established norms through revolution.

And the funny thing is, the parts I loved were unexpected, while the If anyone were to write a Jim Morrison tell-all, band- and soulmate Manzarek would be the man. But, to his everlasting credit, Light My Fire: My Life with the Doors didn't. Using his Doors experiences as the hook, Manzarek reels Ray Manzarek. The Doors were arguably the most important rock-and-roll band of the sixties, unquestionably a catalyst for American music as we know it. Their music was the product of late-sixties southern California, with its idyllic facades. The Doors looked beyond these facades and wrote music about what they found, thus becoming the ultimate symbol for rebellion and alienation. Ray Manzarek co-founded the Doors with Jim Morrison in Together with Robby Krieger and John Densmore they created a legend. Their original mix of jazz, classical, Californian surf, Flamenco guitar and Chicago blues made an irreversible impact on the music of the day. And their worldwide popularity continues today with album sales of nearly two million a year. His story gives illumination to the dark myths and lays to rest the rumours that have abounded about Jim Morrison and the band.

Contacts: Donna Williams Donald Lee 212.560.8030, [email protected] 212.560.3005, [email protected] Press Materials: pbs.org/pressroom or thirteen.org/pressroom American Masters When You’re Strange , a film about The Doors About The Doors Jim Morrison At the center of The Doors’ mystique is the magnetic presence of singer-poet Jim Morrison, the leather-clad “Lizard King” who brought the riveting power of a shaman to the microphone. Morrison was a film student at UCLA when he met keyboardist Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach in 1965. Upon hearing Morrison’s poetry, Manzarek immediately suggested they form a band; the singer took the group’s name from Aldous Huxley’s infamous psychedelic memoir, The Doors of Perception . Constantly challenging censorship and conventional wisdom, Morrison’s lyrics delved into primal issues of sex, violence, freedom and the spirit. He outraged authority figures, braved intimidation and arrest, and followed the road of excess (as one of his muses, the poet William Blake, famously put it) toward the palace of wisdom. Over the course of six extraordinary albums and countless boundary-smashing live performances, he inexorably changed the course of rock music – and died in 1971 at the age of 27. He was buried in Paris, and fans from around the world regularly make pilgrimages to his grave. In 1978, the surviving members of the band – Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore – reunited to record the accompanying music for An American Prayer , a compilation of Morrison’s poetry readings. He remains the very template of the rock frontman, and his singing, poetry and Dionysian demeanor continue to inspire artists and audiences around the world.

  • Behind the Doors: Perceptions of Reality
Behind the Doors: Perceptions of Reality ALBERTO NONES Aesthetic and Ethical Perception of Reality Following a contribution on the Doors that recently appeared on this journal,1 this paper intends to specify which elements of newness were introduced by the band as well as the roots from which they originated. A secondary aim is to throw some more light on the way the Doors differentiated themselves from the hippie and counterculture movements, although they of course shared many of their motives, the foremost of which was a general sense of rupture. Listening to a song like “Break on Through (to the Other Side)” (track 1 of The Doors, Elektra, January 1967) truly gives the sense of a break to the other side, a passage, a change of physical and metaphysical status. The song opened the Doors’ first album and was also their first official single, the medium through which the band began the climb to success. In 1967 calls to break to the other side, which may sound harmless if decontextualized today, were growing. They represented an invitation to make one’s way into a dizzying freedom, where life energy was seemingly boundless and aimed at something transcendent. The invitation was to go beyond, and this paper tries to explain in what sense. It was not the Doors, of course, who invented the concept of going beyond the limits, nor, for that matter, the hippies or the exponents of counterculture. In certain contexts, such as the sixties, this timeless temptation has surfaced in a particularly acute form, as if it were a collective contagion, and its transposition in music can be disruptive.
