  • Bill's Guide to Week Two of the 47Th Annual Chicago International Film
Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife.

  • Models of Time Travel
MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

  • Abuse of Weakness
Strand Releasing presents ABUSE OF WEAKNESS A film by CATHERINE BREILLAT Starring Isabelle Huppert & Kool Shen Official Selection: Toronto International Film Festival COLCOA French Film Festival New York Film Festival Country of Origin: France / Germany / Belgium Format: DCP/2.35/Color Sound Format: Dolby SR Running Time: 104 minutes Genre: Drama Not Rated In French with English Subtitles National Press Contact: Jenna Martin / Marcus Hu Strand Releasing Phone: 310.836.7500 [email protected] [email protected] Please download photos from our website: http://extranet.strandreleasing.com/secure/login.aspx?username=PRESS&password=STRAND SYNOPSIS Inspired by director Catherine Breillat’s (FAT GIRL, ROMANCE) true life experiences, her latest film, ABUSE OF WEAKNESS, is an exploration of power and sex. Isabelle Huppert (THE PIANO TEACHER, 8 WOMEN) stars as Maud, a strong willed filmmaker who suffers a stroke. Bedridden, but determined to pursue her latest film project, she sees Vilko (Kool Shen), a con man who swindles celebrities, on a TV talk show. Interested in him for her new film, the two meet and Maud soon finds herself falling for Vilko's manipulative charm as their symbiotic relationship hurdles out of control. DIRECTOR’S NOTE Abuse of weakness is a criminal offense. I used it as the film’s title because I like the sound of it, but also because it has another meaning. Abuse of power. Yes, Maud has strength of character; paradoxically, it’s her weakness. Being an artist means also revealing one’s weaknesses to others. I would have preferred Maud not to be a film director and the story not to seem autobiographical, since even the spectator (at least in intimate movies, and mine are) looks at himself in a mirror.

Of course, that was the aim of his magisterial scholarly work, and while unquestionably impressive, his tome turned out to be by no means the last word on the topic. Indeed over the intervening quarter century, quite to the contrary, we witnessed a continuously increasing outpouring of specialized political science, historical, philosophical, psychological, and other disciplinary studies with clearly ―no school of leadership‖with a single unifying theory emerging.

  • 25Th Hour (2002) Cast
25th Hour (2002) In late 2002, it is Monty Brogan's last day of freedom before he begins serving a 7 year long sentence for dealing drugs. He plans to spend his last night of freedom at a club with his childhood friends Jacob Elinsky and Frank Slaughtery, his girlfriend Naturelle, and his father, James. Frank, his best friend since they were both three, is an investment banker on Wall Street. Jacob is a quiet, dorky high school teacher who comes from a privileged background. Monty sells drugs for Uncle Nikolai, a Russian mobster, along with his partner Kostya. Kostya tells Monty it might have been Naturelle, who lives with Monty and knows where he hid his drugs and money, who tipped the cops. Monty began selling drugs to pay protection on James's bar. At a night club, Jacob runs into one of his students, Mary, who goes with them into the club. Monty and Frank discuss what will happen to him in prison, and Frank promises him that they'll open a bar together once he is released. Frank and Naturelle also discuss how Monty got to this position, but Frank accuses her of not doing anything because she got used to the life his drug money afforded. He then insinuates that she might have been the one who tipped off the cops. Monty and Kostya then go to speak to a group of Russian mobsters, run by Uncle Nikolai, who gives Monty some advice on how to survive in prison. Then it is revealed that it was Kostya who sold Monty out.
