This challenge is most serious in tribe Caryophylleae since the supposed genera seem to be highly artificial, and the available morphological evidence cannot effectively be used for delimitation and exact determination of taxa. The main goal of the present study was to re-assess the monophyly of the genera currently recognized in this tribe using molecular phylogenetic data. We used the sequences of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the chloroplast gene rps16 for 135 and 94 accessions, respectively, representing all 16 genera currently recognized in the tribe Caryophylleae, with a rich sampling of Gypsophila as one of the most heterogeneous groups in the tribe.

About 30% of these species are endemic of Iran. There are continuously uncertainties regarding the circumscription of genera, and especially because of new molecular and phylogenetic studies that in many cases do not confirm the traditional generic circumscription, the need for tangible traits to distinguish between the genera is felt. Accordingly, in this study, leaves’ anatomical characteristics of some species of Caryophylloideae from Iran have been described. Forty-nine characters (including 16 qualitative and 33 quantitative characters) of leaves’ transverse sections and epidermis have been considered. No anatomical characteristics are constant in all species of the genera, but some of them such as stomatal patterns, limb symmetry, collenchymatous tissue and layers of fiber around the central vascular bundles may be useful to separate some genera. Contemplating morphological and anatomical features, two new combinations and a key for the genera of this subfamily in Iran have been provided.

  • Pucciniales) on TREES and OTHER PLANTS in SLOVENIA
Zbornik predavanj in referatov 13. Slovenskega posvetovanje o varstvu rastlin z mednarodno udeležbo Rimske Toplice, 7.-8. marec 2017 NEW FINDINGS OF RUSTS (Pucciniales) ON TREES AND OTHER PLANTS IN SLOVENIA Barbara PIŠKUR1, Dušan JURC2 Gozdarski inštitut Slovenije, Oddelek za varstvo gozdov, Ljubljana ABSTRACT Rusts (Puccinales) are obligate biotrophs, representing one of the largest groups of plant pathogenic fungi and are one of the most economically important pathogens of many native and cultivated plants. Introduction of alien rusts to new environments can lead to large-scale epiphytotics. Their life cycle is complex, requiring usually more than one host to be completed. The taxonomy and identification of rusts is notoriously difficult, and only the implementation of morphological and molecular data can reveal the correct taxonomic emplacement. From 2014 to 2016 trees and other plants with rust infections were sampled. Identifications of rusts were performed based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetical comparisons to reference ITS-rDNA sequences. First official records of alien rust species Melampsoridium hiratsukanum and Phragmidium mexicanum are reported.

E‐mail: [email protected] Received 8 January 2019; Accepted 17 February 2020; Article first published online 19 February 2020 Abstract Although mountain ranges are often recognized as global biodiversity hotspots with a high level of endemism, diversity and biogeographic connections of isolated and weakly explored mountains remain poorly understood. This is also the case for Shirkuh Mts. in central Iran. Here, Yazdana shirkuhensis gen. & spec. nov. (Caryophylleae, Caryophyllaceae) is described and illustrated from the high alpine zone of this mountain. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of nuclear and plastid DNA sequence data show that Y. shirkuhensis is related to Cyathophylla and Heterochroa (tribe Caryophylleae).

Plant Pathology & Quarantine 8(1), 63–66, Doi 10.5943/ppq/8/1/9 Abstract During a survey of rust fungi in Shangla and Battagram Districts of Khyber Pakutunkhwa, Pakistan, Phragmidium mexicanum on Duchesnea indica was collected and described as a new record for Pakistan. This study has raised the number of reported rust taxa of Khyber Pakutunkhwa to 181. Key words – Battagram – Shangla – taxonomy – Phragmidium Introduction Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), formerly known as the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP), is one of five Provinces of Pakistan, located in the Northwest of the country. It is situated at approximately 34.00°N 71.32°E. The area is famous for hill coniferous forests, herbal plants, and large biodiversity. This is a floristically rich area with many plant diseases such as leaf blights, smuts and rust (Ullah 2018). Previously about 180 species of rust fungi have been reported from this area (Afshan & Khalid 2009, Afshan et al. 2008, Ishaq et al. 2013, Ullah et al. 2014, Fiaz et al. 2017, Ullah 2018).

Zeyen Associate P~ofessor James V. Groth Assistant Professor Department of Plant Pathology University of Minnesota June 15, 1978 PRELIMINARY DRAFT REPORT, SUBJECT TO REVIEW Page 1 INTRODUCTION This report is based upon lists of major vegetation community types, compiled for a preliminary study of the Regional Copper-Nickel Study Area. Only dominant plant species, as determined by releve techniques, have been included in the discussion of diseases. The intent of this'report is to present a brief survey of the major diseases caused primarily by biotic agents. The information was ob tained from general references and from personal observations of the diseases of the area over the past 11 years. The report is divided into two parts: (1) a comprehensive table of diseases recorded in the area and their causal agents (Table 1), and (2) brief descriptions of 25 diseases of exceptional economic or aesthetic importance. In some cases, particularly for less well documented aesthetically important (conspicuous) but not economically important diseases, no description is included. No attempt was made to deal with the extreme complexity of disease organism interactions and ecology or to update fungal nomen clature and taxonomy. ' The approach was to use concepts and nomenclature employed in most of the standard reference sources.
