Lake Benton Public LibraryOutreach Program

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

Reading opens the door to the world outside, so the Lake Benton Public Library offers an outreach program for homebound patrons living in the Lake Benton community.

Twice a month, a library volunteer will deliver books and/or audiobooks right to the front doors of homebound patrons. Homebound patrons can order specific titles, authors and/or genres by calling the library to speak to a librarian or giving a list to the volunteer delivery person. Delivery/pickup will be the first and third Wednesdays of every month.

Signing up for this program is easy. Simply call the library at 507-368-4641, ext. 4 to get started.

Let us take you places with a good book.

Volunteer Deann Schindler and Library Assistant Corinne Crowe lead a fun preschool program each Friday morning that includes educational stories and crafts.

Friday Morning Fun programs are tailored to younger children but are open to everyone. Each week, the chil- dren will have stories and/or poems read to them, sing songs and do a craft.

Join us for some fun every Friday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, we are limiting attendance to 10 children.

Love the library. Join the FOL Do you love your library? Join our local Friends of the Library group, where you can support us in a variety of ways. The Friends of the Library (FOL) is a volunteer, nonprofit group whose goal is to provide support to the library outside their budgeted needs. The Lake Benton was organized in 2008 and, since then, has funded a variety of needed supplies, equipment and items. The Lake Benton FOL was instrumental in advocating for the 2012 addi- tion and building the sidewalk to the back patio in 2016. They have provid- ed shelving units, including the children’s book bins, collection items and Summer Program incentives. The FOL appreciates donations of time, talents and funds. You can also support the FOL and the library by buying one of our limited- long- sleeved T-shirts. Printed on the front is “Reading is your ticket to adven- ture,” with the library name printed on the back. See them on display and get more details at the library.

Do you want the option of having a book with you anywhere you go, but you don’t want one more thing to keep track of? Do you have trouble remembering to return your books or audiobooks on time? We can help you solve both problems with one easy app.

The Plum Creek Library System offers e-books and e-audiobooks through Overdrive. Find great reading material for all ages and all interests, whether you are looking for a traditional Amish recipe inspired by Beverly Lewis, a nonfiction about the COVID-19 and how it has impacted the world teen reads by Melody Carlson or children’s books. Search by title, author, audience, reading level and a variety of other filters.

Overdrive and Kindle, both available through Plum Creek, can be used on any An- droid or Apple device and can be downloaded from the app store or found by clicking on the Overdrive link through the Plum Creek Library System website.

Go to https://www.plumcreeklibrary.org/ and click on the Overdrive link on the left side of the home page.

Once you have selected a title, check it out by entering your Plum Creek library card number and PIN (usually the last four digits of your card number). Patrons are al- lowed to check items out for up to 14 days and then it automatically returns them, so you never have to worry about overdue fines. Read the title in your web browser or download to your device so you can listen or read off line.

Recently, Overdrive integrated RB Digital into its catalog, so patrons who loved RB Digital’s audio options can now enjoy even more options with Overdrive.

11 Haunt our favorite12 haunt

It’s spooky season and the Lake Benton Public Library invites you to haunt our favorite haunt this weekend.

We will be handing out Halloween candy this Saturday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. Come pick from our wide selection of spooky books and movies for all ages.

Need some help putting your costume together? Check out “Movie Makeup, Costumes and Sets” by Geoffrey Horn. Go behind the scenes to see how the experts do it and get inspira- tion for your own super special costume?

Do you prefer to DIY your costume for Halloween? Look for “Dazzling disguises and clever costumes,” by Angela Wilkes. This colorful book offers more than 50 step-by-step projects to make, sew and paint. How many costumes can you turn a normal box into?

Do you still need to decorate your Jack-o-Lantern? Check out one of our magazines, like “Better Homes & Gardens” or “Country Living” for inspiration for fall-themed pumpkin dec- orations that can be used beyond the holiday. Or, look inside for yummy pumpkin recipes, like the prize-winning pumpkin recipes in October’s “Taste of Home” magazine.

With Halloween on the weekend, kids are going to need a way to wind down after the haunt- ing hour. Check out one of our classic picture books, such as “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson. A witch and her cat are out for a nighttime ride when her hat, bow and wand are blown away. Three helpful animals find them and will return them for a ride, but is there room on the broom for everyone?

We also have “The Spider and the Fly” by Tony DiTerlizzi, a new take on the classic by Mary Howitt, which warns “about those who use sweet words to hide their not-so-sweet inten- tions.” Perfect for storytime.

Newer readers will enjoy our classic “Scooby Doo” , many of which are based on the classic cartoons. Can Scooby, Shaggy and the gang solve the mysteries and unmask the bad guy in time to save the day? More experienced readers will have a frighteningly fun time with the “Goosebumps” series by R. L. Stein.

Why not settle down with a movie before bedtime? We have the complete “Hotel Transyl- vania” series, where Daddy Drac does everything in his power to protect he precious daughter from the outside world, only to find out the world today is very different from the one he remembers. Or what about the Jim Henson clas- sic, “The Dark Crystal?” Jen the Giefling must find a shard of the Dark Crystal to save his world from the evil Skeksis.

Come haunt our favorite haunt and have a fun (and spooky) Halloween.
