Part 1 was a direct commentary on the 12 verses of the Mandukya Upanishad. This was followed in Part 2 by razing to the ground the old, redundant structure of Dualism, so that the new structure of “Non-dual Reality” could be built in its place in Part 3. Now, in Part 4, the important task taken up is to provide an intellectual buttress to protect the new structure. Alaata-Shanti Prakarana undertakes the vital role of Defence that would ensure that the structure of Non-duality, so arduously built up, will resist any effort to undermine it. Philosophical undermining is a threat that all valuable systems of thought are bound to face. The most solid way of protecting the treasure-house of Non-duality is through the pure, subtle minds of sages and saints. However, some intellectual measures are also needed to ward off the irrational attacks which challenge the very foundations of the philosophy. The metaphor of Alaata-Shanti is introduced in the very centre of this Part, like the special decorative arrangement that is threaded in the middle of a flower-garland. The metaphor is no doubt an excellent aid in explaining the illusoriness of Duality. But, in a figurative sense, it serves the key purpose of this Part: The firebrand signifies a defence weapon being wielded in the face of all opposition to the Non-dual Truth. The waving of the firebrand symbollically represents the brandishing of a sword against all attacking forces that attempt to pull down the new structure just built. Sri Gaudapadaji’s work, when seen in this light, can be appreciated as a solid effort to ward off the attacks being faced by Vedanta during his period from certain quarters of the Buddhist camp. Great courage was needed by Sri Gaudapadaji to accomplish this huge task. At the risk of being labelled a “Buddhist in the guise of Vedanta”, Sri Gaudapadaji has patiently used terms familiar in Buddhist writings in order to make his point clear. The Alaata-Shanti metaphor itself has its roots in Buddhistic literature prevailing at the time. Bhat Swami Vivekananda Yoga University Bangalore, India Introduction Vedas demonstrate three domains of living for betterment of process and they include karma (action), dhyana (meditation) and jnana (knowledge). As long as individuality continues as human being, actions will follow and it will eventually lead to knowledge. According to the Dhatupatha the word yajna derives from yaj* in Sanskrit language that broadly means, [a] worship of GODs (natural forces), [b] synchronisation between various domains of creation and [c] charity.1 The concept of God differs from religion to religion. The ancient Hindu scriptures conceptualises Natural forces as GOD or Devatas (deva that which enlightens [div = light]). Commonly in all ancient civilizations the worship of Natural forces as GODs was prevalent. Therefore any form of manifested (Sun, fire and so on) and or unmanifested (Prana, Manas and so on) form of energy is considered as GOD even in Hindu tradition.     The Upanishads- An overview (S.N.Sastri) The word ‘Upanishad’ denotes Brahma-vidya by its derivation. Sri Sankara Bhagavatpada says in his Bhashya on the Kathopanishad that this word is derived by adding the prefixes ‘upa’ (meaning near) and ‘ni’ (with certainty) to the root ‘sad’ which means ‘to destroy’, ‘to reach’, and ‘to loosen’. Thus the meaning of the word ‘Upanishad’ is that it is the knowledge that destroys the seeds of worldly existence such as ignorance in the case of those seekers of liberation who, after becoming free from all desires approach (upa sad) this knowledge. The subject-matter of the upanishads is Brahman, the only Reality. Brihadaaranyaka upanishad, 3. 9. 26 says, “I ask you about Him, the Purusha of the upanishads”. The upanishads are the only source of knowledge about Brahman. The method adopted in Vedanta to impart the knowledge of Brahman is known as the method of superimposition ( adhyaaropa ) and subsequent negation ( apavaada ). In the Bhashya on Br.up.4.4.25 Bhagavatpada says, “The transmigrating self is indeed Brahman. He who knows the self as Brahman which is beyond fear becomes Brahman. This is the purport of the whole upanishad put in a nutshell. It is to bring out this purport that the ideas of creation, maintenance and dissolution of the universe, as well as the ideas of action, its factors and results were superimposed on the Self. Then, by the negation of the superimposed attributes the true nature of Brahman as free from all attributes has been brought out”. This is the method of adhyaaropa and apavaada, superimposition and negation, which is adopted by Vedanta.

    SRILA BHAKTISIDDHANTA SARASVATI GOSWAMI MAHARAJA INTRODUCTION FOR THE BOOK ON BHAKTISIDDHANTA Sarasvati THAKURA During the late '70's and '80's, preaching duties in Bengal now and then broughtme in contact with direct disciples of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and also with disciples of his disciples. From them I heard stories and teachings of Sarasvati Thakura. Hearing little bits here and there, my heart filled with wonder, and also pride on being connected with such a powerful transcendental personality. My eagerness to hear more increased. From my very beginning days in Krsna consciousness I--and surely all others in ISKCON also--was attracted by the personality of Saraswati Thakura. I would often look up at the big painting of him on the wall of our Bury Place (London) temple. It was as if his serious gaze came down directly from Goloka Vrindavana. He was known as "singha-guru"--a spiritual master as fearsome to non-devotees as a lion. Who would not be impressed on hearing of his austerity, learning, strictness, and above all his unflinching devotion to the lotus feet of Sri-Sri Gaura-Nitai and Sri-Sri Radha-Krsna, and his uncompromising, determined preaching of Their glories? Our own glorious spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Srila Prabhupada, was another transcendental "superman." Srila Prabhupada was utterly surrendered at the lotus feet of his guru, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, and always considered himself a humble servant of his spiritual master. Those of unbiased mind understand both to be empowered acaryas, saktyavesa-avataras. By his unbreakable bond of devotion to Srila Saraswati Thakura, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has, by initiating us, linked us also eternally to his spiritual master.
