EXPLANATION: What is reach? The Reach is a formula ICO uses to evaluate the number of people that might have been reached by media communication during the month. Since it is just an estimate and many variables are to be considered, the number itself ist of much use, but the reach can be useful in analysis: Some countries have very concentrated media landscapes, and therefore they will appear as quite small in the normal geographic distribution, but since all their media are quite big, the reach calculation gives a clearer picture of their importance. Coverage can go up or down, and reach ot always follow the same trend. Over time, the reach is a better indicator of the efficiency of a PR campaign than the coverage itself. For example: High amount of coverage with low reach means that mostly small media are covering the game, while a low amount of coverage with very high reach lets us know that large media are publishing news about the game. E-mail: [email protected] 1 THE EFFECTS OF DIGITAL GAMES ON ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCES Abstract This study extends current research on media entertainment by examining the effects of (perceived) game characteristics on hedonic, eudaimonic and telic entertainment experiences. Furthermore, differentiating between meaningful and nonmeaningful games, we investigated whether these game types lead to the experience of different gaming-related emotions and what determines their discontinuation. Building on an online survey with 325 German gamers, we found a game’s narrative, its mechanics, the satisfaction of basic needs and perceived cognitive and affective challenge are associated with the three entertainment experiences in distinct ways.

  • The Reasons That Contributed to the Different Success Stories of Space RTS Games Homeworld and O.R.B
The reasons that contributed to the different success stories of space RTS games Homeworld and O.R.B. Faculty of Arts Department of Game Design Author: Rokas Paulauskas Bachelor Thesis in Game Design, 15 hp Program: Game Design and Programming Supervisor: Masaki Hayashi Examiner: Patrick Prax May, 2021 Abstract Sometimes games that belong to the same genre achieve different levels of success among the player base of the genre. As an example, of two space RTS games Homeworld (released in 1999) and O.R.B. (re‑ leased in 2002), which feature a similar setting and similar gameplay mechanics, Homeworld has been more successful. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the reasons for the different popularity of the two games, using game reviews as the primary source of data to learn about the strengths and the weaknesses of the two games. Thematic analysis has been applied to a total of 27 game reviews of space RTS games Homeworld and O.R.B. Codes describing various strong and weak aspects of both games have been extracted from the texts. The codes have been grouped into various categories tradi‑ tionally described in game reviews, such as the story line, the UI, the graphics, etc. Using these codes as a basis, a number of explanations have been suggested as to why the game Homeworld has been more successful than the game O.R.B. The main reasons discovered are that Homeworld was released several years before its competitor and that some of important game features of O.R.B. suffered from poorer technical execution in comparison to equivalent features in Homeworld.

We use an interdisciplinary framework involving both psychology and gaming. While ACNH creates a virtual world, we highlight its role in satisfying the needs of the real person. In doing so, we reflect on the interdependence between the real world and the virtual one. • Video Game Play and Apparatus
VIDEO GAME PLAY AND APPARATUS Alexander Champlin A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2012 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Rosalind Sibielski © 2012 Alexander Champlin All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Cinematic Apparatus Theory contends that the technological and ideological machine of “the cinema” acts on spectators in advance of and in addition to their engagement with film. This approach allows apparatus theorists to consider the effects and mechanisms of the cinematic machine more broadly than content driven analysis permits. This project seeks to employ elements of apparatus theory and determine if and how these theoretical models can be applied to the study of video games as a medium. In particular, this thesis examines the experiences and player positions opened and encouraged by the technologies of video game play. What this thesis demonstrates is the viability and potential usefulness of an apparatus theory of video games. Specifically, this work explores the nature of video game technologies which combine to provide users an experience of play and interactivity. This is facilitated by a set of technologies: code, computers, and interfaces which both allow users to engage the “text” of a game while simultaneously, partially structuring this engagement. What this approach reveals is that an attention to apparatus as a crucial element of play allows for a more complete understanding of video game use, user experience, and the structures of the medium. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my thesis committee, Radhika Gajjala and Roz Sibielski, for helping me stay on track during this process and pushing me to consider and reconsider my approach.
