  • The Resurrection of Permadeath: an Analysis of the Sustainability of Permadeath Use in Video Games
The Resurrection of Permadeath: An analysis of the sustainability of Permadeath use in Video Games. Hugh Ruddy A research paper submitted to the University of Dublin, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Interactive Digital Media 2014 Declaration I declare that the work described in this research paper is, except where otherwise stated, entirely my own work and has not been submitted as an exercise for a degree at this or any other university. Signed: ___________________ Hugh Ruddy 28th February 2014 Permission to lend and/or copy I agree that Trinity College Library may lend or copy this research Paper upon request. Signed: ___________________ Hugh Ruddy 28th February 2014 Abstract The purpose of this research paper is to study the the past, present and future use of Permadeath in video games. The emergence of Permadeath games in recent months has exposed the mainstream gaming population to the concept of the permanent death of the game avatar, a notion that has been vehemently avoided by game developers in the past. The paper discusses the many incarnations of Permadeath that have been implemented since the dawn of video games, and uses examples to illustrate how gamers are crying out for games to challenge them in a unique way. The aims of this are to highlight the potential that Permadeath has in the gaming world to become a genre by itself, as well as to give insights into the ways in which gamers play Permadeath games at the present. To carry out this research, the paper examines the motivation players have to play games from a theoretical standpoint, and investigates how the possibilty of failure in video games should not be something gamers stay away from.

  • An Exploration of Trends in Loot Boxes, Pay to Win, and Cosmetic
The changing face of desktop video game monetisation: An exploration of trends in loot boxes, pay to win, and cosmetic microtransactions in the most- played Steam games of 2010- 2019 David Zendle*, Rachel Meyer, Nick Ballou Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract It is now common practice for video game companies to not just sell copies of games themselves, but to also sell in-game bonuses or items for a small real-world fee. These purchases may be purely aesthetic (cosmetic microtransactions); confer in-game advantages (pay to win microtransactions), or contain randomised contents of uncertain value (loot boxes). The growth of microtransactions has attracted substantial interest from both gamers, academics, and policymakers. However, it is not clear either how prevalent these features are in desktop games, or when any growth in prevalence occurred. In order to address this, we analysed the play history of the 463 most-played Steam desktop games from 2010 to 2019. Results of exploratory joinpoint analyses suggested that cosmetic microtransactions and loot boxes experienced rapid growth during 2012-2014, leading to high levels of prevalence by April 2019: 71.28% of the sample played games with loot boxes at this point, and 85.89% played games with cosmetic microtransactions. By contrast, pay to win microtransactions did not appear to experience similar growth in desktop games during the period, rising gradually to a prevalence of 17.38% by November 2015, at which point growth decelerated significantly (p<0.001) to the point where it was not significantly different from zero (p=0.32). Introduction The way that the video game industry makes money has undergone important changes in recent decades.

  • Jrpgs in Germany and Japan
Exploring Cultural Differences in Game Reception: JRPGs in Germany and Japan Stefan Brückner1, Yukiko Sato1, Shuichi Kurabayashi2 and Ikumi Waragai1 Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University1 5322 Endo, Fujisawa, Kanagawa 252-0882 Japan +81-466-49-3404 [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Cygames Research2 16-17 Nanpeidai, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0036 Japan +81-3-6758-0562 [email protected] ABSTRACT In this paper we present the first results of an ongoing research project, focused on examining the European reception of Japanese video games, and comparing it with the reception in Japan. We hope to contribute towards a better understanding of how players’ perception and evaluation of a game are influenced by their cultural background. Applying a grounded theory approach, we conducted a qualitative content analysis of articles from German video game websites, user comments, written in response to these articles, as well as Japanese and German user reviews from the respective Amazon online stores and Steam. Focusing on the reception of three Japanese RPGs, our findings show that considerable differences exist in how various elements of the games are perceived. We also briefly discuss certain lexical differences in the way players write about games, indicating fundamental differences in how Japanese and German players talk (and think) about games. Keywords Japanese games, reception, Germany, user reviews, QDA, grounded theory INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a rise in attempts to utilize the vast amounts of text on digital games available online, by using natural language processing (NLP) methods.

  • Embrace the Unexpected: Yet Another Family Conversation
© 2016 TSJLD & Authors ThaiSim Journal: TSJLD Vol. 1, No.1 (Jan-Jun 2016), 38 – 50 Learning Development (TSJLD) ISSN 2158-5539 http://www.thaisim.org/sgld/ Embrace the unexpected: Yet another family conversation Elizabeth Tipton Eastern Washington University, USA James Murff ArenaNet, USA Abstract This paper summarizes a long conversation between an educational game design mother and her entertainment game tester son that began with a discussion about bugs in video games. Along the way, it led to some interesting observations on emergent behavior and metagaming. Finally, this dialog wandered into experiences with emergent gameplay in the design and implementation of pedagogical simulations and games. The importance of good debriefing in the classroom was also underscored. Keywords: bugs; debriefing; designer-player interaction; emergent behavior, intentional emergent gameplay, metagaming, player agency Introduction: Working definitions of Gaming Simulation Four years ago, the authors made public during panel discussions at ABSEL and ISAGA their conversation on improving educational game design through an understanding of the problems commonly seen in during the testing and consumption of entertainment games. Those dialogues have continued to this day. What follows began over dinner one day when the topic was bugs in video games. 38 Embrace the unexpected: Yet another family conversation Tipton & Murff Bugs Bugs, harmless or otherwise, are a common part of software development. You can't predict every single outcome of a particular scenario, especially when the system is extremely complex. While test cases and extensive QA can help, games always ship with glitches ranging from the hilarious-but-harmless to the game- breaking. Some games ship with so many bugs that they are unplayable, but thoroughly entertaining to watch from the perspective of a horrible disaster playing out.

  • Lucasarts and the Design of Successful Adventure Games
LucasArts and the Design of Successful Adventure Games: The True Secret of Monkey Island by Cameron Warren 5056794 for STS 145 Winter 2003 March 18, 2003 2 The history of computer adventure gaming is a long one, dating back to the first visits of Will Crowther to the Mammoth Caves back in the 1960s and 1970s (Jerz). How then did a wannabe pirate with a preposterous name manage to hijack the original computer game genre, starring in some of the most memorable adventures ever to grace the personal computer? Is it the yearning of game players to participate in swashbuckling adventures? The allure of life as a pirate? A craving to be on the high seas? Strangely enough, the Monkey Island series of games by LucasArts satisfies none of these desires; it manages to keep the attention of gamers through an admirable mix of humorous dialogue and inventive puzzles. The strength of this formula has allowed the Monkey Island series, along with the other varied adventure game offerings from LucasArts, to remain a viable alternative in a computer game marketplace increasingly filled with big- budget first-person shooters and real-time strategy games. Indeed, the LucasArts adventure games are the last stronghold of adventure gaming in America. What has allowed LucasArts to create games that continue to be successful in a genre that has floundered so much in recent years? The solution to this problem is found through examining the history of Monkey Island. LucasArts’ secret to success is the combination of tradition and evolution. With each successive title, Monkey Island has made significant strides in technology, while at the same time staying true to a basic gameplay formula.

  • Rewriting the Story: Videogames Within the Post-Gamergate Society
Jones 1 Abigail Jones English 4995 Joanna Hearne Rewriting the Story: Videogames within the Post-Gamergate Society “Begin like this: If photographs are images, and films are moving images, then video games are actions.” - Gaming: Essays on Algorithmic Culture, Alexander Galloway Staring through the scope in Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2007), as you navigate through the boggy swamps of some exotic jungle, there is never any doubt that you are in control. The operator’s thumbs roll over the toggles of the controller signaling to the consul how the character on screen must move. By enacting actions within the real world, players affect the actions of the avatar within the game world. To any well-versed videogame player, this is common knowledge; when one plays a videogame it is to be engaged within the world of the game and to ultimately achieve the programmed goal of the game. Up until the creation of the videogame, mediums of entertainment were largely spectator based. While reading a book you may turn the page, but you do not affect the ending of the book. When viewing a movie you may be actively watching, but you are not able to change the ending of the movie. But when playing a videogame the decisions made within the game determine whether the goal is reached, or if it is not: game over. In Alexander Galloway’s essay, “Gaming: Essays on Algorithmic Culture,” he defines videogames as a medium based upon action; “There has emerged in recent years a whole new medium, computers and in particular videogames, whose foundation is not in looking and reading but in the instigation of material change through action.” It is this Jones 2 action that appeals to players--the level of interactivity and agency.

  • Gamepro Media and Princeton Review Once Again Awarded the California University the Two Top Prizes in Their "Top Schools for Video Game Design Study."
GamePro Media and Princeton Review once again awarded the California university the two top prizes in their "Top Schools for Video Game Design Study." Wed, 2 Mar 2011 SAN FRANCISCO -- While the top game designers, programmers and artists gather at the world's largest Game Developers Conference at the San Francisco Moscone Convention Center this week, many of the top minds in interactive entertainment are coming through the University of California's undergraduate and graduate video game design programs. For the second year in a row, GamePro Media and The Princeton Review awarded USC the two top prizes in their "Top Schools for Video Game Design Study for 2011." The ranking, now in its second year, recognizes the top 10 undergraduate and top 10 graduate programs for video game design out of approximately 150 surveyed in North America. USC ranked highest in both categories. The university's video game design programs are interdisciplinary, involving the Interactive Media Division of the USC School of Cinematic Arts and the GamePipe program in the Department of Computer Science at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. "In the short span of five years since its inception, the USC GamePipe program has become the national leader in education and professional game development," said Dean Yannis C. Yortsos of the USC Viterbi School. "It is a testament to the program quality, its leadership and the interdisciplinary strength at USC, which combines computer science, cinematic arts and fine arts in a unique partnership." The survey, which included more than 50 questions, covered a wide range of topics, from academics and faculty credentials to graduates' employment and career achievements.

MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Kevin J. Rutherford Candidate for the Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Director (Jason Palmeri) Reader (Michele Simmons) Reader (Heidi McKee) Reader (Kate Ronald) Graduate School Representative (Bo Brinkman) ABSTRACT PACK YOUR THINGS AND GO: BRINGING OBJECTS TO THE FORE IN RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION by Kevin J. Rutherford This dissertation project focuses on object-oriented rhetoric (OOR), a perspective that questions the traditional notions of rhetorical action as solely a human province. The project makes three major, interrelated claims: that OOR provides a unique and productive methodology to examine the inclusion of the non-human in rhetorical study; that to some extent, rhetoric has always been interested in the way nonhuman objects interact with humans; and that these claims have profound implications for our activities as teachers and scholars. Chapter one situates OOR within current scholarship in composition and rhetoric, arguing that it can serve as a useful methodology for the field despite rhetoric’s traditional focus on epistemology and human symbolic action. Chapter two examines rhetorical history to demonstrate that a view of rhetoric that includes nonhuman actors is not new, but has often been marginalized. Chapter three examines two videogames as sites of theory and practice for object-oriented rhetoric, specifically focusing on a sense of metaphor to understand the experience of nonhuman rhetors. Chapter four interrogates the network surrounding a review aggregation website to argue that, while some nonhumans may be unhelpful rhetorical collaborators, OOR can assist us in improving relationships with them.
