Food Styling What does a Food Stylist do? https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/how-be-food-stylist

 A food stylist's job is to help create the kind of irresistible images that make you want to lick the page they're printed on. Are there particular foods that are harder to style than others? What’s the hardest dish to style?  Brown and homey foods, such as shepherd's pie, lasagne and stews, are particularly tricky - sometimes include raw chopped ingredients or fresh herbs in the shot to brighten the dish up. What are the top tips to improve my food styling and photography?

 Lighting is key - always shoot during the day near a good window.  Use small plates that are plain in colour (white or light blue) to show off the food at its best.  Try to keep a wide rim clear around the plate, instead of overloading it, to make it appear more elegant.  The easiest way to photograph your food is from overhead because you will need the least amount of props and backgrounds.  If you try to photograph a stacked food like a burger from the side, you will need a base for it to sit on as well as a background.  Keep things simple and the food will shine - too many dishes and accessories will only complicate your photo.  If something is brown, then make copious use of green herbs, yoghurt, red chillis, spring onions or lemon zest to perk up the colour. Tom Kerridge’s Five easy presentation wins! 1. Remember – simplicity is key I think it’s best to let the ingredients speak for themselves. Try not to overcrowd the plate and don’t use too many garnishes.

2. Don’t be afraid of family-style serving By family-style serving I mean putting something in the middle of the table for everyone to dig into. So something like a big casserole – it looks better as one big dish rather than served in individual bowls. Finish it with fresh herbs and encourage everyone to serve themselves to add a bit of fun to it *NEA 2 TIP – If you do a family serving, you must show what ONE portion would look like

3. Let it shine A shine and a glisten always make food look very appealing, so finish a dish off with oil or the cooking juices from the food itself. It helps to lift everything and make it feel alive. It’s something food stylists do well [when preparing food to be photographed or displayed]. 4. Utilise all of the ingredient People often throw away things like fennel fronds or leaves – don’t. Use these on the dish. If you’re using carrots, use the green tops, or similarly the leaves of beetroot are edible. 5. Follow interesting people on Instagram Join Instagram and follow chefs, food stylists and photographers. People like Gizzi Erskine and Jamie Oliver post really interesting pictures of their food, and it’s a good place to get ideas for presentation. Gizzi Erskine Fun Food styling with Tunnock’s teacakes!
