A Baseline Analysis of Poaching in Chiquibul National Park
A BASELINE ANALYSIS OF POACHING IN CHIQUIBUL NATIONAL PARK BY KATHERINE GROFF A THESIS Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Fisheries and Wildlife ABSTRACT A BASELINE ANALYSIS OF POACHING IN CHIQUIBUL NATIONAL PARK BY KATHERINE GROFF Illegal hunting of wildlife, also known as poaching, in Chiquibul National Park (CNP) may be contributing to decreasing wildlife populations. Management strategies are limited due to a lack of information on the extent of poaching and motivations of poachers. The objectives of this research are to assess the extent of poaching, to address Guatemalan border community residents’ understanding of wildlife in CNP and what animal species are targeted by hunters, and to investigate factors affecting poaching in CNP and Guatemalan border residents’ perceptions about poaching in CNP. These objectives were addressed by (1) synthesizing information found in CNP Ranger field notebooks and reports, (2) interviewing Guatemalan border community residents, and (3) interviewing authorities in Guatemala and Belize. Guatemalan border community residents perceived a lower level of poaching in the CNP than CNP rangers, but both thought that poaching has decreased over the years. CNP rangers considered poaching to be a danger to wildlife in the area, and they thought that wildlife numbers have suffered due to poaching. This research demonstrated little support for the hypothesis that legal regulations and the enforcement of regulations are factors that contribute to whether respondents view other community members as contributing to poaching. However, the subsistence needs of hunters and their families is an important factor affecting residents’ decision to poach. -

I starched and ironed the tablecloth and napkins, polished each glass, and set the table at least a day before the big event. I slavishly followed menus, trekking from store to store to find the exact ingredients. No recipe was too long, no meal too elaborate. In fact, I thrived on multistep dishes that required days of attention and care: puff pastry, layered pates and vegetable terrines, miniature sweet and savory tarts. I still love to have friends over, but something happened along the way. First one daughter was born, then a second. Part-time work evolved into a full-time job. Casual hobbies became passionate avocations. With all these activities fighting for my time, I had to change the way I cooked. My menus are simple and flexible now, and my parties mostly spur-of-the- moment. I love potlucks and shared suppers, and kids are always welcome. The food's fun, the atmosphere's casual, and family and friends always gravitate to the kitchen. -

Scotland Food Standards Training Manual Foreword The standard and quality of food is important to all consumers and food businesses across Scotland. Consumers must have confidence that food they buy and eat will be what they expect, will not be harmful and that they are protected from fraud. This manual provides information to authorised officers on these areas. The Food Standards Agency in Scotland has worked closely with the Scottish Government to ensure that the reputation of Scottish food and drink is upheld as part of Scotland’s National Food and Drink Policy. The Food Standards Training manual was first issued by the Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland in order to assist authorised officers with the challenging area of food standards. In 2007, the Agency’s sector-specific simplification project1 considered the potential for expanding the use of this manual. In Northern Ireland the manual is now in its third successful year, and evaluation of the manual has further determined the need for this type of resource. Work began in Scotland to produce a Scottish version of the manual in partnership with local authority authorised officers, based on the positive feedback received on the Northern Ireland manual from District Councils and to address issues raised by audits undertaken in Scotland. Partnership is key in the development of Agency projects and a working group was established to take this project forward with members of the Scottish Food Enforcement Liaison Committee Food Standards Sub Committee. The group offered invaluable expertise and experience in producing the Scottish edition of this training manual, and kept the main objective in focus, to provide a practical training and reference tool for authorised officers. -
