Adobe Systems Incorporated 2003 Annual Report Adobe Systems Incorporated 2003 Annual Report About the cover The ultimate expression of art and technology, the cover of this Annual Report was created using Adobe® Illustrator.® Interpolating the outlines from the cover image of Adobe Creative Suite packaging generates a wonderful new “organic” form. Adobe’s innovative tools provide the foundation for the unique creation, communication, and expression of information, ideas, and memories. Information. Ideas. Memories. Communicating each of these elements invokes the power of both art and technology. One company builds platforms that bring the two together: Adobe Systems. Adobe Systems Incorporated 2003 Annual Report Exchanging information. Adobe® Portable Document Format This image reveals a portion of the underlying PDF code that created this Annual Report. Adobe PDF is the de facto standard for the secure and reliable distribution and exchange of electronic documents and forms around the world. Adobe PDF files preserve the look and integrity of original documents, and they can be shared with anyone electronically, regardless of hardware and software platforms. Connecting people, businesses, and the documents that bring them together. What if your customer wanted an illustrated electronic catalog displaying only the products she ordered on a monthly recurring basis? Delivered, say, now? What if your supplier wanted to be alerted about impacts on his inventory levels as soon as your production forecasts changed? Would you be able to accommodate him? If you deployed the Adobe Intelligent Document Platform, the answer to these questions would be yes. The flow of business processes, the agility of enterprises, the satisfaction of customers: all are governed by the exchange of information. Over the last decade, corporations and governments have spent billions of dollars to automate this exchange. One of their most successful investments has been adopting Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF) as a standard for electronic document delivery. With Adobe PDF, enterprises have improved their time-to-market, information reliability, and competitive advantage. However, these organizations now face an obstacle in the massive volume of paper-based information that must be manually entered into back-end systems. Working with Adobe, enterprises can solve this challenge. First, data-driven documents and forms are reliably generated and delivered immediately to employees, constituents, and customers. Next, recipients fill out those documents and forms and submit them electronically. Finally, business-critical data flows directly into enterprise business systems. The result? Labor costs are reduced, document security is improved, and time-to-market is further accelerated. All from the Adobe Intelligent Document Platform. 4 – 5 Lloyds TSB, London, England With over 14 million personal and Combining data validation, visual business customers in the UK— fidelity to the bank’s original paper forms, including 1.8 million Internet banking and built-in online help, Adobe PDF customers—financial services giant forms have allowed Lloyds TSB to re- Lloyds TSB must capture and exchange engineer its business processes, resulting large volumes of critical information for in reduced administrative costs, better use by numerous lines of business. Ratava’s Line: Emergent Learning and Design Using Collaborative Virtual Worlds Steve DiPaola Daria Dorosh Galen Brandt Simon Fraser University Fashion Institute of Technology Digital Space Commons [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Ratava's Line is an online, 3D virtual world fashion and interactive narrative project created collaboratively by students at both the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City and at Interactive Arts at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver, Canada, using emergent, collaborative 2D and 3D systems. This distance learning project, developed over two months and culminating in an online event in multiple, remote locations, integrated three key design elements: the translation of original 2D fashion designs from FIT students into 3D avatar space; exhibits of artwork of student and professional artists from New York City and Vancouver in virtual galleries; and creation of an interactive narrative "fashion cyber-mystery" for online users to participate in and solve in a culminating, cyber-physical event. The overall project goal was to explore how online collaboration systems and virtual environments can be used practically for distance learning, fashion and virtual worlds design, development of new marketing tools including virtual portfolios, and creation of cross cultural Figure 1.
