Jackson State University Gains National Recognition!

Jackson State University's Pre Med program has recently gained national recognition for their efforts to Increase Diversity in Medicine and to Decrease Health Disparities.

Since 2007 Dr. Bridget Rideau, Jackson State’s Pre Med Coordinator and JSU and University of School of Medicine Alumnae; has been working to increase underrepresented minorities in Medicine and other Health Careers.

During this time, through the help, collaboration and support of Jackson State’s President Dr. Carolyn Meyers; Dr. Mark Hardy, Provost & VP For Academic Affairs; Dr. Felix Okojie, VP for Research; Dr. Paul Tchounwou, Dean of the College of Science, Engineering & Technology; Dr. Loretta Moore, Associate Dean; Dr. Gregorio Begonia & Dr. HongtaoYu, Department Chairs of Biology and Chemistry and Biochemistry; Dr. Maria Harvey & Dr. Connie Dixon, JSU Honors College, Dr. Charles Spann & Dr. George Washington, past Pre Health Advisors; Dr. Bridget Rideau, JSU Pre Med Coordinator; And the faculty and staff of Jackson State,

Jackson State University has had the auspicious opportunity to be in partnership with in their BS/MD program, in which students earn their BS degrees from Jackson State then proceed to earn their M.D. at Meharry Medical College whose mission statement is “Worship of God Through Service to Mankind.” and attend paid summer internships at Meharry. Jackson State University has had the great opportunity to be in partnership with Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine, the country’s only Historically Black School of Veterinary Medicine and attend conferences at TU. www.onemedicine.tuskegee.edu

Jackson State University also has been able to enjoy a unique partnership with the University of Health Medical Sciences of St. Kitts and the International University of Nursing. In which JSU students are able to earn their M.D. or Nursing degree on the island of St. Kitts. www.umhs-sk.org, www.iuon.org,

Jackson State University has also been named a feeder school for Duke University School of Nursing’s Making a Difference in Nursing Program. www.nursing.duke.edu/modules/son_academic

Jackson State University continues to work with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and their Division of Multicultural Affairs, especially their pipeline programs and MedCorp Direct. http://mca.umc.edu

Jackson State University has been named on the 1st Tour 4 Diversity in Medicine.

Started by two physicians looking to help decrease health disparities and educate and inspire students from diverse backgrounds, the Tour 4 Diversity in Medicine will be February 20-24.

The Tour 4 Diversity in Medicine will visit , Johnson Smith University, North Carolina State University, and end with Jackson State University!

The Pre Med Conference will be at Jackson State

on February 24!
