I'm here in Baltimore, Maryland, and its Tuesday, April 7th, 2020. I'm speaking by phone with Dr. James E Cross who is currently in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Good morning and thank you for being with me today. JC: Good morning, I’ve been looking forward toward the interview. AS: The first question we'll be starting with is, if you could tell me a little bit about where you were born and what your family life was like growing up. JC: I was born on May the 29th, 1937 on a 20 acre farm just outside of the city limits of Hampton, Virginia. Actually, my birth certificate gives the place of birth as Elizabeth City County, Virginia. The area was eventually annexed in as part of the city. Today, it would be said that I came from a single-family home, but that would be misleading. That is because in addition to my mother and grandparents, I grew up in a home with ten uncles and aunts. Although we didn't have a lot of money, I had a very, very rich childhood. On the farm, we raised strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, cantaloupes, corn, and other types of vegetables. [0:05:00] In addition, we had pigs, a yard full of chickens and two cows. -

Notes on Exodus 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE The Hebrew title of this book (we'elleh shemot) originated from the ancient practice of naming a Bible book after its first word or words. "Now these are the names of" is the translation of the first two Hebrew words. "The Hebrew title of the Book of Exodus, therefore, was to remind us that Exodus is the sequel to Genesis and that one of its purposes is to continue the history of God's people as well as elaborate further on the great themes so nobly introduced in Genesis."1 Exodus cannot stand alone, in the sense that the book would not make much sense without Genesis. The very first word of the book, translated "now," is a conjunction that means "and." The English title "Exodus" is a transliteration of the Greek word exodus, from the Septuagint translation, meaning "exit," "way out," or "departure." The Septuagint translators gave the book this title because of the major event in it, namely, the Israelites' departure from Egypt. "The exodus is the most significant historical and theological event of the Old Testament …"2 DATE AND WRITER Moses, who lived from about 1525 to 1405 B.C., wrote Exodus (17:14; 24:4; 34:4, 27-29). What’s New With Our Members Happy Birthday to Peter Bennett (3/23) Marc Mutty (3/23) Paul & Jan Butler (who are residents of Ocean View) report that they do not believe they have had any contact with the resident who is ill with the virus. They are both doing well and send their regards. Sybil Riemensnider reports that she has lots of books and food and has been watching The Crown on Netflix. Bill York says he is facing up to 4 months of isolation – I’m sure he’d love to hear from club members. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW YOU’RE COPING WITH ISOLATION AND WHAT TIPS YOU HAVE FOR YOUR FELLOW ROTARIANS ON HOW TO SURVIVE BEING HOUSEBOUND SO I CAN PASS THEM ON. The Board Meeting – The Board met last night in a conference call and you will be getting an email about some of the topics discussed, but here’s some of the business that was covered. ¾ The board approved donations above and beyond the budgeted amounts (already paid) of $3,000 to the South Portland Food Cupboard and $1,000 to Judy’s Pantry; our treasurer Nicole will be sending those checks right away. Youth Services Director Matt McAleney will also be following up with organizations that we traditionally support (Boys & Girls Club, schools, etc.) to see what the extraordinary needs are.
