Acquisition Information Bequest of the Charles Brabin estate, 1959 Biography Charles J. Brabin was a British-born director, screenwriter, and producer whose film career spanned 1908 to the mid-1930s. He came to New York in the early 1900s. Brabin joined the Edison Company around 1908, acting first and then directing. Brabin directed Theda Bara in KATHLEEN MAVOURNEEN (1919) and LA BELLE RUSSE (1919), and the two were married in 1921. DRIVEN (1923), STELLA MARIS (1925), and THE MASK OF FU MANCHU (1932) were among the films directed and occasionally scripted by Brabin. Collection Scope and Content Summary The Charles Brabin papers span the years 1904-1940 and encompass 1.1 linear feet. The collection consists primarily of script material. There is a scrapbook, diary, and critiques (not by Brabin) of several 1913 Edison films. There is no material on Theda Bara other than a poem (not by Brabin) inscribed to her. However, when US explorer, Hiram Bingham, announced that he had discovered the “lost city” in 1911, few would have predicted Machu Picchu’s rise to fame during the twentieth century. My dissertation traces the unlikely transformation of Machu Picchu into its present-day role as a modern tourism destination and a representation of Peruvian national identity.

During that time, I examined the racist stereotypes of white, western people living in Taiwan on the natives. I compared the data I gathered from the field work with the Chinese stereo- type that is prevalent in the popular culture. The results show the importance of racist generalization in white westerners’ self-perception. The character called Fu Manchu, which emerges in various different media since 1913, appears to be an important means in measuring these changing perceptions. Fu Manchu’s fear factor is formed after the character’s way of expressing its sexu- ality when it was first created. In the western world after the “sexual revolution” in 60s, Fu Manchu is depicted scary because of the repression of its own sexuality. This research associates the philosophical causes of this change with the contradic- tions in Freud’s corpus. It also shows the importance of gender roles in the for- mation of whiteness. The white mob describes their opposite Chinese, and therefore Fu Manchu, deviant when they want to perceive themselves as sexually purified, chaste and virgin. Later on, when they want to create themselves from scratch as individuals who liberated their sexuality, Fu Manchu is once more devised as a symbol of malignancy who represses its sexuality.

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. This paper takes a look at Elinor Glyn’s Atlantic travel in her life and in her novels, and her visits to America drawing on her archives, memoir, magazine articles and contemporary newspaper reports of her trips. Her novel Six Days (1924) was adapted into a popular silent film which was exhibited in Europe and the USA. It’s combination of love and romance, transatlantic travel on the Cunard liner, secret military mission and political co-operation is taken an example how the special relationship between the USA and the UK has been depicted in romance novels. It draws parallels between the movies 6 Days (Goldwyn, Brabin, 1923) and Titanic (Cameron, 1997). This paper was a keynote at the Love Across the Atlantic conference, University of Roehampton, June 2017.
