THE PRINCESS BRIDE S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure The 'good parts' version abridged by WILLIAM GOLDMAN one two three four five six seven eight map For Hiram Haydn THE PRINCESS BRIDE This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it. How is such a thing possible? I'll do my best to explain. As a child, I had simply no interest in books. I hated reading, I was very bad at it, and besides, how could you take the time to read when there were games that shrieked for playing? Basketball, baseball, marbles—I could never get enough. I wasn't even good at them, but give me a football and an empty playground and I could invent last-second triumphs that would bring tears to your eyes. School was torture. Miss Roginski, who was my teacher for the third through fifth grades, would have meeting after meeting with my mother. "I don't feel Billy is perhaps extending himself quite as much as he might." Or, "When we test him, Billy does really exceptionally well, considering his class standing." Or, most often, "I don't know, Mrs. Goldman; what are we going to do about Billy?" What are we going to do about Billy? That was the phrase that haunted me those first ten years. I pretended not to care, but secretly I was petrified. Everyone and everything was passing me by. I had no real friends, no single person who shared an equal interest in all games.

  • Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/The Philippines Louie Jon A
Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/the Philippines Louie Jon A. Sanchez In a previous paper, the author had begun discoursing on the process of acculturating Korean/Hallyu soap opera aesthetics in television productions such as Only You (Quintos, 2009), Lovers in Paris (Reyes, 2009), and Kahit Isang Saglit (Perez & Sineneng, 2008). This paper attempts to expand the discussions of his “critico-personal” essay by situating the discussions in what he described as the “diasporization” of the Filipino, and the Philippines, as constructed in recent soap operas namely Princess and I (Lumibao, Pasion, 2012) A Beautiful Affair (Flores, Pobocan, 2012), and Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw (Bernal & Villarin, 2013). In following the three teleserye texts, the author observes three hallyu aesthetic influences now operating in the local sphere—first, what he called the “spectacularization” of the first world imaginary in foreign dramatic/fictional spaces as new “spectre of comparisons” alluding to Benedict Anderson; the crafting of the Filipino character as postcolonially/neocolonially dispossessed; and the continued perpetration of the imagination of Filipino location as archipelagically—and consequently, nationally—incoherent. The influences result in the aforementioned “diasporization”, an important trope of simulated and dramaturgically crafted placelessness in the process of imagining Filipino “communities” and their sense of “historical” reality, while covering issues relating to the plight and conditions of the diasporic Filipino. Keywords: Koreanovelas, Korean turn, teleserye, translation, imagined communities, diaspora, hallyu After a decade of its constant presence in the Philippine market, the extent of change brought about by the “Koreanovela” in the landscape of Philippine television is clearly noticeable and merits revaluation.

  • 20 Century Ends
New Year‟s Celebration 2013 20th CENTURY ENDS ANKIND yesterday stood on the threshold of a new millennium, linked by satellite technology for the most closely watched midnight in history. M The millennium watch was kept all over the world, from a sprinkle of South Pacific islands to the skyscrapers of the Americas, across the pyramids, the Parthenon and the temples of Angkor Wat. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said Filipinos should greet 2013 with ''great joy'' and ''anticipation.'' ''The year 2013 is not about Y2K, the end of the world or the biggest party of a lifetime,'' he said. ''It is about J2K13, Jesus 2013, the Jubilee 2013 and Joy to the World 2013. It is about 2013 years of Christ's loving presence in the world.'' The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east. The caution was exemplified by Seattle, which canceled its New Year's party for fear of terrorism. In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III is bracing for a “tough” new year. At the same time, he called on Filipinos to pray for global peace and brotherhood and to work as one in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Mr. Estrada and at least one Cabinet official said the impending oil price increase, an expected P60- billion budget deficit, and the public opposition to amending the Constitution to allow unbridled foreign investments would make it a difficult time for the Estrada presidency.

These people have made studying and life abroad less daunting and scary. Indeed, they have made my stay in Honolulu memorable, meaningful, and, yes, fun, too! To them, my sincerest gratitude and appreciation. First, I would like to thank Graham, my advisor and strong ally, for believing in me and my work. There were moments when I felt that the strong weight of teaching and research was too much to handle, but his words of wisdom and motivation kept me going. Graham, I think you’re the best graduate mentor one could ask for, and I sincerely thank you for being so generous with your expertise, time, care, and encouragement. I also thank my committee members Pia Arboleda, Patricia Halagao, Christina Higgins, and John Mayer for their insights, suggestions, and expertise that greatly helped me think and rethink about my work. • Harnessing Fandoms for Political Participation
1 FAN NATION: HARNESSING FANDOMS FOR POLITICAL PARTICIPATION Celerio, Pauline Jane H. University of the Philippines Diliman [email protected] Cruz, Mariella Roselle R. University of the Philippines Diliman [email protected] Layco, Hydie D.R. University of the Philippines Diliman [email protected] Samson, Glenn Pierre C. University of the Philippines Diliman [email protected] ABSTRACT In the Philippines, schoolchildren consider celebrities as heroes. During elections, adults elect actors-turned- politicians in public office. Former artist Joseph Estrada, for instance, is now mayor of Manila after having been senator, Vice President, and President of the country. Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, meanwhile, is now in congress representing his home province, Sarangani. Currently, two of the icons being heavily marketed by the country’s largest media conglomerate are comedian Vice Ganda and the romantic tandem of Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo, dubbed as KathNiel, which both target the youth segment. The three personalities appear in television shows every day and have Facebook pages that have now garnered more than 12 million and 890,000 ‘likes’, respectively. What if the youth are as passionate in political and civic concerns as they are about celebrities? The notion that political apathy characterizes the present generation rose due to the seeming preoccupation of the youth with such inconsequential affairs. Research studies, however, say the political engagement of the youth today simply differs from the traditional expressions of political involvement. Mass demonstrations, for instance, are no longer just limited to the streets; they are now also present in cyberspace. The youth’s informed participation in political and civic affairs is crucial to the life of a functioning democracy.

International Journal of Communication 9(2015), 2202–2220 1932–8036/20150005 From Local to Global: Philippine Broadcast Networks and the Filipino Diaspora CHERISH AILEEN A. BRILLON Far Eastern University, Manila, Philippines This article presents an overview of the landscape of Philippine broadcast media and discusses how through their international arms—particularly ABS-CBN Global, GMA Worldwide Incorporated, and Pilipinas Global Network Limited (PGNL)—they have expanded their operations to cater to the 11 million Filipinos living and working abroad. Using a political economy framework, the discussion attempts to propose a necessary starting point for further research on the Filipino diaspora that shifts the focus from studies of representations to the role of media institutions in the creation of the diaspora as an audience. The article offers an institutional perspective into how these local networks create and program content for that audience. The article argues that the concentration of economic and political capital and power within media entities continues to legitimize the duopolistic control of ABS-CBN and GMA-7 in local markets and now in the international media landscape. Keywords: globalization, political economy, transnational media, Filipino diaspora, Philippine mass media Introduction Appadurai’s (1996) famous work on mediascapes pointed to the important role of mass media at the heart of the global cultural economy. This emphasis on studying modern communication systems and their role in capitalist societies and in the global flow of information, goods, and services has been given importance in recent years (Appadurai, 1996; Bagdikian, 1983; Bettig & Hall, 2003; Croteau & Hoynes, 2000; Gitlin & Barnouw, 1997; McChesney, 2003; Mosco, 1996; Picard, 1989; among others).
