The First Mohammedan Invasion (1206 &1226 AD) of Kamrupa Took
The first Mohammedan invasion (1206 &1226 AD) of Kamrupa took place during the reign of a king called Prithu who was killed in a battle with Illtutmish's son Nassiruddin in 1228. During the second invasion by Ikhtiyaruddin Yuzbak or Tughril Khan, about 1257 AD, the king of Kamrupa Saindhya (1250-1270AD) transferred the capital 'Kamrup Nagar' to Kamatapur in the west. From then onwards, Kamata's ruler was called Kamateshwar. During the last part of 14th century, Arimatta was the ruler of Gaur (the northern region of former Kamatapur) who had his capital at Vaidyagar. And after the invasion of the Mughals in the 15th century many Muslims settled in this State and can be said to be the first Muslim settlers of this region. Chutia Kingdom During the early part of the 13th century, when the Ahoms established their rule over Assam with the capital at Sibsagar, the Sovansiri area and the area by the banks of the Disang river were under the control of the Chutias. According to popular Chutia legend, Chutia king Birpal established his rule at Sadia in 1189 AD. He was succeeded by ten kings of whom the eighth king Dhirnarayan or Dharmadhwajpal, in his old age, handed over his kingdom to his son-in-law Nitai or Nityapal. Later on Nityapal's incompetent rule gave a wonderful chance to the Ahom king Suhungmung or Dihingia Raja, who annexed it to the Ahom kingdom.Chutia Kingdom During the early part of the 13th century, when the Ahoms established their rule over Assam with the capital at Sibsagar, the Sovansiri area and the area by the banks of the Disang river were under the control of the Chutias. -

Rural Development ABSTRACT Tradition is the cumulative heritage of society which permeates through all levels of social organization, social structure and the structure of personality. The tradition which is the cumulative social heritage in the form of habit, custom, attitude and the way of life is transmitted from generation to generation either through written words or words of mouth. It was planned to focus the study on stakeholders of rural development and folk media persons, so that their experience, difficulties, suggestion etc. could be collected to make the study realistic and feasible. The study was conducted in the state of Orissa comprising 30 districts out of which 3 coastal districts, namely, Cuttack, Puri and Balasore were selected according to the specific folk media culture namely, ‘Jatra’, ‘Pattachitra’ , ‘Pala’, ‘Daskathjia’ for their cultural aspects and uses. The study reveals that majority of the respondents felt that folk media is used quite significantly in rural development for its cultural aspect but in the era of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), it is losing its significance. In the social Novels, any section or class of the human beings are dealt with. A novel is a narrative work and being one of the most powerful forms that emerged in all literatures of the world particularly during 19th and 20th centuries, is a literary type of certain lenght that presents a ‘story in fictionalized form’. Marion crawford, a well known American novelist and critic described the novel as a ‘pocket theater’, Clara Reeve described the Novel as a “picture of real life and manners and of time in which it is written”. -

Class - VIII AGRICULTURE OF ASSAM Agriculture forms the backbone of the economy of Assam. About 65 % of the total working force is engaged in agriculture and allied activities. It is observed that about half of the total income of the state of Assam comes from the agricultural sector. Fig 2.1: Pictures showing agricultural practices in Assam MAIN FEATURES OF AGRICULTURE Assam has a mere 2.4 % of the land area of India, yet supports more than 2.6 % of the population of India. The physical features including soil, rainfall and temperature in Assam in general are suitable for cultivation of paddy crops which occupies 65 % of the total cropped area. The other crops are wheat, pulses and oil seeds. Major cash crops are tea, jute, sugarcane, mesta and horticulture crops. Some of the crops like rice, wheat, oil seeds, tea , fruits etc provide raw material for some local industries such as rice milling, flour milling, oil pressing, tea manufacturing, jute industry and fruit preservation and canning industries.. Thus agriculture provides livelihood to a large population of Assam. AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE For the purpose of land utilization, the areas of Assam are divided under ten headings namely forest, land put to non-agricultural uses, barren and uncultivable land, permanent pastures and other grazing land, cultivable waste land, current fallow, other than current fallow net sown area and area sown more than once. 72 Fig 2.2: Major crops and their distribution The state is delineated into six broad agro-climatic regions namely upper north bank Brahmaputra valley, upper south bank Brahmaputra valley, Central Assam valley, Lower Assam valley, Barak plain and the hilly region. -

Krishnalila in Terracotta Temples of Bengal Amit Guha Independent Researcher Introduction The brick temples of Bengal are remarkable for the intricately sculpted terracotta panels covering their facades. After an initial period of structural and decorative experimentation in the 17th and 18th centuries, there was some standardization in architecture and embellishment of these temples. However, distinct regional styles remained. From the late 18th century a certain style of richly-decorated temple became common, particularly in the districts of Hugli and Howrah. These temples, usually two- storeyed or atchala and with a triple-arched entrance porch, had carved panels arranged in a fairly well-defined format (Figure 1). Ramayana battle scenes occupied the large panels on the central arch frame with other Ramayana or Krishna stories on the side arches. Running all along the base, including the base of the columns, were two distinctive friezes (Figure 2). Large panels with social, courtly, and hunting scenes ran along the bottom, and above, smaller panels with Krishnalila (stories from Krishna's life). Isolated rectangular panels on the rest of the facade had figures of dancers, musicians, sages, deities, warriors, and couples, within foliate frames. This paper is an iconographic essay on Krishnalila stories in the base panels of the late-medieval terracotta temples of Bengal. The temples of this region are prone to severe damage from the weather, and from rain, flooding, pollution, and renovation. The terracotta panels on most temples are broken, damaged, or completely lost. Exceptions still remain, such as the Raghunatha temple at Parul near Arambagh in Figure 1: Decorated Temple-Facade (Joydeb Kenduli) Hugli, which is unusual in having a well-preserved and nearly-complete series of Krishnalila panels. -

A few years ago, I met some accomplished Gond artists in Delhi and really liked their art and the history behind it. Subsequent reading and a visit to Bhopal revealed a lot. The legendary artist J. Swamintahan recognised the importance of the indigenous arts within the contemporary framework, which eventually lead to the establishment and development of institutions like Bharat Bhavan, IGRMS and Tribal Museum. Over the decades, may art forms have been lost to time and it is important to keep the surviving ones alive. -

Title of the Project/Purpose: Prepared by: Shri Bipul Ojah “A study of various aspects of Khol: Village- Dalahati A Sattriya Musical Instrument” Barpeta-781301 Assam During the first reporting period I proceeded with my works as per my plan, and took up two tasks mentioned in the plan. One of them was to acquire knowledge of ‘Ga-Maan’, “Chok’, “Ghat” etc. of the main time division (taal) of Khol from the experienced masters and Sattriyas of the Satras belonging to the three main groups. The other task was to prepare the pattern of the time division in a scientific method by maintaining the characteristic features of the Sattriya Khol on the basis of the acquired knowledge. For these two tasks, I first chose Barpeta Satra and the Satras of the Kamalabari group of Majuli, and apart from doing field study there, I acquired knowledge of the Khol from the masters there. In this course I talked to Sri Basistha Dev Sarma, Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Satra, Sri Nabajit Das, Deka Sattriya of Barpeta Satra, Sri Jagannath Barbayan (92 years), the chief ‘Bayan’ of Barpeta Satra and Sri Akan Chandra Bayan, besides several distinguished Sattriya artists and writers such as Sri Nilkanta Sutradhar, Sri Gunindra Nath Ojah, Dr. Birinchi Kumar Das, Dr. Babul Chandra Das etc. Moreover, I studied various ‘Charit Books’ (biographies of the Vaishnavite saints), research books etc. and got various data on the Khol practiced in Barpeta Satra. After completing these works on the Khol of Barpeta Satra, I worked on the time division (taal) of the Khol practiced in the Satras of the Kamalabari group of Majuli. -

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VOLUME 9, ISSUE 03, MARCH 2020 ISSN 2277-8616 The Charismatic Authority Of Sankardeva And Routinization Of His Charisma: A Weberian Analysis Bedanta Bikash Bora Abstract: The theory of authority is at the heart of the sociology of Max Weber where he focusses on the historical shifts in the exercise of power. The third type of authority explained by Weber is the theory of charismatic authority where he talks about the charismatic powers of different personalities like prophets, heroes in wars, religious leaders etc; by dint of which they are considered superior to the ordinary people. This paper attempts to experiment this celebrated theory in the life and legacy of Sankardeva, a 15th century polymath who founded the vaishnavism in Assam and propounded a reformed version of Hinduism. His eternal charisma on the Assamese society in many ways corresponds to the theory of Weber. The notion of the recognition of validity of charisma, the concept of felt duty, the emancipator and revolutionary spirit of charisma and repudiation of the past- can be very easily attributed to the charismatic personality of Sankardeva. Weber also talks about the routinization of charismatic personality i.e. the demands placed on the charismatic personality while settling the crisis of succession, validation of the positions of authority, social status and the economic priviledges of the subjects, and the demand of giving it an administrative apparatus; which clearly corresponds to the routinization of charisma of Sankardeva after his death in the form of shifting of the authority to his favourite disciple Madhavdeva and in increasing bureaucratization of the Sattra institutes. -

Journal of Xi'an University of Architecture & Technology ISSN No : 1006-7930 Relevance of translation (Special reference to Anubadar Katha by Krishna Kanta Handique) Jyotsna Devi Research scholar Gauhati University Abstract: Krishna Kanta Handique is a helmsman of modern Assamese language who has contributed to the granary of Assamese literature with writings and criticism on Western language and literature. He has also done a great amount of translation from Sanskrit and other European languages. Krishna Kanta Handique analyses various issues and aspects of literature in his original writings. Anubadar Katha by Krishna Kanta Handique is an essay associated to the issues of translation. In this article, he has analysed the role of translation to make a language and literature enrich with certain instances. He also talks about the relevance of translation in Assamese literature too. The objective of the paper is to analyse relevance of translation discussed by Krishna Kanta Handique in his Anubadar Katha Key words: Assamese literature, Krishna Kanta Handique, relevance, translation. Introduction Krishna Kanta Handique was one of the most renowned figures of modern Assamese literature whose contribution to Assamese literature is immense. He is a helmsman of Assamese language and literature with the knowledge of thirteen languages including Sanskrit, Latin, Greek, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Pali etc. Apart from the translation of ancient epical writings such as Yashastilak, Naishadh-Charita, Krishna Kanta Handique has enriched the literary field with his critical writings. Moreover, he has also contributed to the granary of Assamese literature with poems, paintings, philosophy, children literature, biographical writings and criticism on Western language and literature.
