'“War News” Is Published Today Because a Momentous Thing Has
‘The Irish Republic was proclaimed by poster’: the politics of commemorating the Easter Rising Roisín Higgins In a city beset by rumours, the leaders of the Easter Rising quickly began to consolidate their message. On the second day of the insurrection they issued War News, a four page news sheet priced at a penny: ‘“War News” is published today because a momentous thing has happened. … The Irish Republic was proclaimed by poster, which was prominently displayed in Dublin’. War News also carried a report of the statement made by Patrick Pearse that morning which said: The Irish Republic was proclaimed in Dublin on Easter Monday, 24th April, at 12 noon. Simultaneously with the issue of the proclamation of the Provisional Government the Dublin Division of the Army of the Republic, including the Irish Volunteers, Citizen Army, Hibernian Rifles, and other bodies, occupied dominating points in the city. The G.P.O was seized at 12 noon, the Castle was attacked at the same moment, and shortly afterwards the Four Courts were occupied. 1 Two things are striking about this account of the events of Easter Monday. Firstly, there is a very clear attempt to specify the exact moment of origin - to convey a sense of absolute alignment - and, secondly, there is no reference to the Proclamation having been read aloud. The Irish Republic was proclaimed not by Pearse but by poster. Therefore, even though a considerable amount of attention was being paid to how the Easter Rising should be recorded and remembered, the most powerful feature of its subsequent commemorative ritual was overlooked. -

In the Basque Country, 1895 marked the birth of the Partido Nacionalista Vasco (Basque Nationalist Party), concurrent with the development of the cultural nationalist movement known as the ‘Gaelic revival’ in pre-revolutionary Ireland. In 1939, the Spanish Civil War ended with the destruction of the Spanish Second Republic, plunging Basque nationalism into decades of intense persecution. Conversely, at this same time, Irish nationalist aspirations were realized to an unprecedented degree during the ‘republicanization’ of the Irish Free State under Irish leader Éamon de Valera. -

TEACHERS’ NOTES PRIMARY VIRTUAL TOUR Introduction This set of Teachers’ Notes has been created by the Education Department of the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks in order to aid the teaching and interpretation of the ‘Proclaiming a Republic: the 1916 Rising’ Virtual Tour. The virtual tour - Provide teachers and student with an engaging and thought-provoking learning resource based around the aims to: 1916 Easter Rising and the National Museum of Ireland’s expansive ‘Easter Week’ collection of artefacts and images. - Provoke discussion and reflection upon key themes reflected in the exhibition. These include the roles of ordinary people during the Rising, in particular children, young people and women – the choices they had to make and what motivated those choices. These Teachers’ - Provide further information about the key artefacts on each stop of the Notes aim to: Virtual Tour, as well as a brief historical context. - Suggest potential discussion points in order to aid classroom discussion, and to suggest possible solo and group activities for students to engage in, which will enhance their understanding of the material presented. - Provide teachers with the relevant curriculum links, highlighting why each section of the tour was chosen and to explain what we hope to achieve for students at each location. Themes 1. The theme of choices – what motivated those who took part in the Rising and why others did not participate? We also consider those who had no A number of themes choice but were impacted by, or caught up in the Rising. We ask students are highlighted and to think about what choices they might have made, and to consider the explored throughout complexities inherent in these choices. -

Cumann na mBan: During the Easter Rising Dylan Savoie Junior Division Individual Documentary Process Paper: 500 words Once I learned about National History Day, I immediately wanted to do something related to my Irish heritage seeing as my mother was born in Ireland. In my research, I found the Easter Rising. Now that I had narrowed my selection down, I began to dig deeper, and I came across an Irish women's group, Cumann na mBan, that helped greatly in the Rising but has gone largely unnoticed in history. I tried to have a wide range of research. First, I began by searching for a video about Cumann na mBan. I had found an RTE documentary on the Easter Rising of 1916. It was in that documentary that I came across Fr. Oliver Rafferty, a professor at Boston College. I was able to obtain his email address, contact him, and we had a phone interview. I searched websites and books at my local and Boston Public Library, taking notes and citing them in Noodletools as I went. The Burns Library at Boston College has the most extensive Irish History collection outside of Ireland, so in January, I went there too and was able to obtain many primary sources. In February, I went to Boston College and interviewed Fr. Rafferty in person. I was able to talk with him and combine what I had learned in my research to understand my topic in more depth than I had before. After I collected my research, I decided that my project would be best represented in the form of a documentary. -

His publications include a book on religion in America and Canada, The Conscience of the State in North America, The Early Development of Irish Society, Anti-Catholicism in 'Victorian England and The Catholic Church and Ireland. It was commissioned - and most of it was actually written - before the present disturbances fell upon the country. Hill 16 is an open-air terrace at one end of the 82,300 capacity Croke Park in Dublin, Europe’s third-largest stadium. Synonymous with the Dublin fans, the Hill is steeped in history and is considered an icon of Irish sport. Although Croke Park’s primary use is for Gaelic football and hurling, the venue is regularly used to host major international music concerts. Recent years have seen appearances by The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, U2 and Bruce Springsteen. The technology that supports the operation of a modern multi-use stadium such as Croke Park must be of the highest quality. Audio plays a key role in the day to day operation of the venue and its management team recently undertook an overhaul of the stadium’s audio provision, including that of the famous old Hill, which it considered to be outdated and requiring constant maintenance. Leading consultancy Vanguardia were appointed as consultants to the project and approached POLAR Business Development Manager Adam Brown to bid for the use of Renkus Heinz speakers to replace the ageing system on the Hill 16 open-air terrace, as well as the courtyard area adjacent to the rear of that section. Hill 16 presented a unique challenge in comparison to the rest of the stadium. The covered areas at Croke Park offered a relatively straightforward setting, with sufficient mounting points to enable the required coverage and containment to be obtained with few issues. -
